The way of the fist.

THE KING OF FIGHTERS '98 ULTIMATE MATCH FINAL EDITION and THE KING OF FIGHTERS 2002 UNLIMITED MATCH are now available, DRM-free on GOG.com. Get them separately for 50% off or grab them together 66% off. Offer lasts until June 8, 1pm UTC.
Two legendary fighting games to kick it old school! Expanded fighter rosters, more game modes, and -in the case of 2002 UNLIMITED MATCH- fully upgraded and redesigned system and game balance for all characters. Quite the combo.
Is the 2002 game different from the free one they gave before?

Yes, it's the most current version of the game.
Add me so we can try them out. I'm also hoping for Last Blade 2.

Can anyone tell me what 98 has over 2002 and so on? I picked up 2002 cause the larger roster and has more graphics options for screen types from what I looked up but what is the point of 98? anything special about that one? any info would be great!.

pmcollectorboy: Wait... I got that game for free.

Exceed20XX: 2002 Unlimited Match is different from what was given away for free (an arcade emulated version of 2002). From what I'm seeing on the Steam page, Code Mystics was the developer of this port. Does that mean this actually works much better than all of those questionable Dot Emu ports? If so then hell yes, bring on the era of actually competent SNK ports!
I have to run a special setup on my tablet to play them on it with my controller. It's infuriating.

I'm no expert, but why do people play smash bros melee and brawl instead of 4? Or what about street fighter II still being played?

I played a ton of KOF 98 growing up, and the only reason why I like it so much compared to later versions was Robert Garcia. Everything about that guy is fun to use in that game, and then they kind of nerfed him and made him look a whole lot more generic.

cant compare it that way. 2 different games KOF 98 and 2002 are very, very similar to each other besides roster but both have an equal fan base. I guess it's one of those whatever you grew up with is what you stick by.

ReynardFox: Can you turn the border art off? Can you turn any and all sprite filtering off?

Kinda BS how graphically inferior these ports are to the PS2 versions though.

Still, I wasn't expecting these... so now I AM expecting you to bring King of Fighters XIII here. Don't let me down SNK.

SeaHeroic: Yes and yes, border art and sprite filtering are on by default but can be turned off in the graphics options.
Border has options for art, black and none. Black leaves it in the original aspect ratio with black borders, none stretches it out.
Cheers for the info!

Have you played smash bros or street fighter? They're very similar between versions, but the core difference is easily frame data and their added blue shell methods in later games.

Mafwek: Wait, so this is actually greatly improved version of the game?
If I understand correctly, than the answer is: YES.
I can't find a King of Fighters GOG forum so does anyone know where I can find full fighter lists for these?

I was just thinking the same thing. On the flip side, i'm about to put down some ghost hunting videos to look at some KOF tutorials. I do a little real martial arts myself, and wouldn't mind finding a character or two that's easy for me to learn due to similarity with what i do IRL.
The king of capitalisation!

Is it crossplay with Steam?

It has to do with play mechanics and balancing. For instance, in Brawl prat falling was a controversial mechanic added to 3 and removed with 4. The Street Fighter Alpha series used combo systems with various adjustments between entry which leads to the SFA2 vs SFA3 discussion still going on. They did a retrospective video for the 30th Anniversary Collection that highlights some of those gameplay differences here.

Then there's obviously the characters added and/or removed in each entry and the need to consider how each roster change influences the balance of the game. Characters can also play radically different between installments due to move, property, or damage value changes etc.
