It's time to celebrate the 14 years of making games last forever. We're doing that by releasing one of the most anticipated games by the community – The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

The game is widely considered one of the best video games of all time and has received credit for popularizing large open-world role-playing games. After many requests from our users and being released on almost every appliance that is able to run the game, the acclaimed RPG is available on GOG in two versions – The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Anniversary Edition (-50%) and Special Edition (-67%).

It is worth mentioning that Skyrim on GOG comes with a dedicated build, to give users the best possible adventure in Tamriel. The game is entirely playable offline thanks to GOG’s DRM-free nature and gives users the Anniversary Edition content without the need for Creation Club access.

As the game is recognized as one of the most modded titles in the history of video games, support for community-created content in Skyrim was one of our top priorities. The GOG version is compatible out of the box with most modifications mods via Nexus Mods Vortex v1.6.12 and newer. Support for mods requiring Skyrim Script Extender will be added later today. Additionally, GOG is preparing something special to provide an even smoother experience with mods – expect more details soon.

Take the chance to travel to Tamriel before the discounts on The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim editions end on 13th October, 10 PM UTC. Also, join us in celebration of the 14th GOG Anniversary which will last until October 9th, 2022, at 10 PM UTC.

dtgreene: I get the impression that there is some enemy level scaling in Skyrim, just like there is in Morrowind.
Some scaling is fine. A small level range to keep enemies a little challenging depending on when you're expected to face them is actually good. But full on scaling like in Oblivion or FFVIII is just plain ridiculous. Obviously, this is my opinion.

SeduceMePlz: This option was present in the original release of the game.
avatar
mk47at: All reports say that the option has been removed in the GOG version.
Wait, what? We HAVE to use Nexus Vortex and can't install mods manually??

Oh, I hope this isn't true. Is this true GOG? I have other mod managers I use.
Skyrim is here we've waiting so long for this thank you GOG & Bethesda. hope Fallout 4 follows with it too.

Thanks a lot for that additional work, bought as soon as I got sight of it.

Please bring more of the Bethesda Stuff, that is still missing here. I think another meme of (now) "Fallout 4" will arise. :)

If there should not be enough votes already, please vote guys:

- "Fallout 4 GOTY"

The missing rest ("Wolfenstein 2009", "Prey 2006", "Heretic 2", "Hexen 2 Expansion", "Keen Dreams", "Hovertank 3D") would be nice, too. Those have legel issues at the moment, but you have gotten around those a few times already. SO PLEASE bring more. The money / my money is still ready for those titles...

Time4Tea: but I found the level scaling largely sucked all the fun and immersion out of Oblivion for me.

WinterSnowfall: Playing Oblivion without Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul (OOO) is like admiring a diamond ring while it's covered in dirt ;). It vastly changes how scaling works in the sense that it sometimes caps it outright (no more villagers in ebony armor!) and limits other monsters to certain levels (both min and max), so much so that you can think of it as (mostly) the classical static approach. That and a ton of improvements such as opened container textures are really a must these days and greatly improve the experience. Can't imagine playing the game without it.
Ok, thanks for the tip. I have Oblivion and tried it a couple of years ago, totally vanilla. I enjoyed it for the first few hours, but once I realized what it was doing with the level scaling (around level 6-7), I was hugely turned off and stopped playing. If/when I try it again, I'll definitely use mods.

InSaintMonoxide: No level scaling in Skyrim! You actually get more powerful as you should. I hated that in Oblivion too.
avatar
ncameron: Ah... not quite. There is level scaling, but it's done a lot better than it was in Oblivion. Yes, you do get to feel more powerful, as you should.

Another recommendation, if there is anyone that is absolutely opposed to level scaling, is a total overhaul called Requiem. It removes all level scaling. Be warned though, it makes the game much harder. As in 'be afraid of wolves' harder.
Ok, good to hear they improved that aspect in Skyrim. Thanks for the tip!

I don't remember noticing any level scaling in Morrowind. If it is there, then it is much more subtle and less obnoxious than the way it was implemented in Oblivion.

Interesting! I didn't know that. Thanks for the Info!

Me too. MO2 is just better in every way and just work, even manually is better than Vortex.

I want to know who paid off who to lock GOG Skyrim to Vortex only... assuming the rumours are true, that is. If it is then I might ask for a refund.

I personally don't like mod managers and don't use them. They are all too complicated and overloaded for me. I liked the little window in the Skyrim launcher where you could manage the mods (or the individual files). Unfortunately, Bethesda had deactivated this at some point and moved everything to the Creation Club (the Mods menu). I would be happy if you get back the old window in the Skyrim launcher. If Skyrim by default can not manage mods that is kind of embarrassing.

Other way (manuell) you can edit directly the Plugins.txt file: C:\Users\NAME\AppData\Local\Skyrim Special Edition\plugins.txt

I'm testing now. Reinstalling Steam Special Edition and the GOG to test between them.

The problem is load order. Bethesda's default mod manager didn't handle load order, and when the mods load in progression is paramount.

Yep. I have edited my post below. You can directly sort the load order in the plugins.txt. And in the little old window (at the Skyrim-Launcher) I could also sort the loading order. But as it is at the moment it is not so great solved.

MO2 needs to be updated to work with the new folder locations as it still points to the only one that was there before (C:\Users\<Username>\Documents\My Games\Skyrim Special Edition opposed to C:\Users\<Username>\Documents\My Games\Skyrim Special Edition GOG.)

Edit: and also the more important one ("%localappdata%\Skyrim Special Edition" instead of "%localappdata%\Skyrim Special Edition GOG")

I'm sure it will work once that happens just give the MO2 team a bit of time as the game has only been out for 24 hours.

Yeah, this has seriously nagged me throughout the day at work, so I just saw this. :D

Thanks. Reminds me of the weird pathing error that has been plaguing a few Enderal players; somehow the save paths got mixed up and it kept looking in Skyrim SE and not Enderal SE (don't remember atm if it was in the game, the tc, or due to MO2...).

Yes, it's best to wait a while for everything to stabilise, including mods.

Wow. I didn't realize with the Special edition Anniversary patch they removed the barebones mod manager they had on the launcher menu to push you to use their Creation Club mod access in game through Bethesda.net. WOW. Terrible practices.

Totally agree with you! And unfortunately you can no longer simply activate this via the INI file. I find that really not well solved.
