The Broken 4th Wall from Outer Space

The Deadly Tower of Monsters, a self-conscious action-platformer set in a huge B-movie set, is now available DRM-free on GOG.com, with GOG Galaxy support for achievements and a 33% launch discount.

Ah, the magic of low-budget motion pictures. Who wouldn't love the chance to peer behind the curtain and see how these fantastic creations are brought to life by a crew of talented actors with bills to pay and their visionary director who probably wrote the script at the back of a cereal box. Then used that same cereal box to create the sound effects for a flurry of bats, footsteps on a gravel yard, and a malfunctioning space-engine. Before painting over it to make a convincing death-ray gun.

Styled as a '70s b-movie and containing all the wonderful clichés that marked their greatness, The Deadly Tower of Monsters lets you follow the incredible adventures of a dashing space explorer, a plucky space-princess, and a space-robot companion. Together they will clobber and disintegrate impossible space-foes, pull off breathtaking space-stunts, and navigate ridiculously-looking space-props. All under the hilarious commentary of a spaced-out director who is watching their spectacular exploits on DVD. Who says true art isn't born by limitations?

Press Play, suspend your disbelief, and climb The Deadly Tower of Monsters, DRM-free on GOG.com. Don't forget to also check out the fantastic Digital Calendar, offered as a free bonus goodie. The 33% launch discount will last until April 28, 12:59 PM UTC.

ValamirCleaver: I wonder how competently this game maintains the '50s sci-fi vibe?

Breja: That's actually what has me a little confused. It looks 50s, but the description says 70s.
The (in-game) movie was filmed in the 70s, but the game is inspired by movies from 40s-70s, and It references films from different periods as well. It has a little bit of everything.

Breja: I don't know... the idea and the setting sound better than the game looks. Wishlisted for now. I'll wait for some opinions, search for some reviews, and then we'll see.
It's better to look for the latest reviews, considering the game was updated with a few patches, including a big update with local co-op and hard mode. Here are two of the latest reviews that you might find helpful:

Exactly what I thought when I saw the trailer! :)
Hi everyone. Just dropping a reminder here that all Deadly Tower purchases include a free digital calendar of Scarlet Nova that can be found in the game's root directory. Make sure not to miss it!

Let us know what you think. Sample photo attached.

HypersomniacLive: Is it heavy on timed+reflexes actions?
It has a parry system that is really fun to use. You can deflect attacks and projectiles by timing the roll exactly before you get hit. It's not necessarily mandatory to get through the game, but it adds a lot of fun to the experience. Combat in general is more on the casual end though.

Nope, and even if you make a mistake when jumping you could teleport to your previous location by pressing a button. I have bad reflexes and I had no trouble throughout the game.

Edit: About what the dev said above, I never even parried. I just Dodge rolled throughout the game. :)

abordeu: Hi guys, for those concerned about the game's execution, it has like a 94% approval rate on Steam. So I'm confident enough to say that the game has had a really good reception among the existing players. You can always check for trailers/reviews and such on the web.

The director commentary is what really steals the show here.

Minmataro: Does it support GoG Achievements?

abordeu: Yes, it supports GOG achievements!
I was hoping to see it on gog, needless to say i bought it immediately now, thanks for bringin the game here!
Oh nice this looks fun!
It is mentioned in one of the reviews that the PS4 version looks nicer.
Is that still true or is the GOG version the same as the PS4 release now?

Hehe, I could be wrong but the VHS filter option being on in video settings might have made the reviewer think that.

Hi, this is something inaccurate from Indie Gamer Chick's review. The PC version (GOG version) has some post-processing VFXs and other little features that didn't make it to the PS4 version, which make the game look better. The PC version is the best version graphics-wise. No doubt about it.

Actually, the PS4 version doesn't even feature dynamic reflections.

It's possible that the reviewer played it without the 'VHS filtering', as Hunter65536 is suggesting, and she simply preferred that setup in PS4.

Nice looking game and a very tempting price but I spent some money on music so I just can't do it right now... :-\

I loved Zeno Clash (the first one) and will definitely buy this game later based on good (Steam) reviews alone. Thanks for bringing it here!
Most definitely wishlisted, seems to be right up my alley!

Sadly, I'll have to buy it next month (not that much to go), as I'm saving up money to get a decent computer to run all the GOG games I have and that I can't play on my current laptop. :P

Kudos to the devs for releasing their awesome game here!
Hmm, this game reminds me of something.
Not totally sure what it is because of fuzzy memory, but for some reason images of a Dr.who episode and the Mars Attacks! movie popped up in my mind.

Kinda makes me curious to what was the inspiration behind this game.

It was originally an arcade game.

Alas, there is not much room for an arcade cabinet in my home. The excellent Amiga version is good enough though.

"But in the case of The Deadly Tower our inspiration is much more obvious, like going to Flash Gordon, The Planet of the Apes, and the old B-movies we watched at kids. They’re not even movies of our time, they’re older than us—we grew up with Star Wars and all this is previous to that." - Carlos Bordeu, interview with PC Gamer.
