Look over there! It's a three-headed…tentacle?

Celebrated classics The Curse of Monkey Island and Maniac Mansion (-33%) return, DRM-free on GOG.com.
To celebrate, The Secret of Monkey Island: SE and Monkey Island 2: SE are 65% off until March 26, 2PM UTC. Get them together with Curse of Monkey Island for an additional 25% bundle discount.

The Curse of Monkey Island
Meet Guybrush Threepwood. He's stranded mid-ocean atop a bumper car, he's hungry, thirsty, and much, much taller than you remember him. Yet still as determined as ever to save Elaine from the clutches of his undead nemesis, the evil pirate LeChuck. After his wedding proposal goes terribly awry, he will join a barbershop quartet, curb the enthusiasm of a demonic skull bent on world domination, and quite possibly die while trying to lift The Curse of Monkey Island. All in a day's work.

Maniac Mansion
Oh no, Sandy got abducted by the eccentric, quite possibly deranged Dr. Fred! Surely this has nothing to do with the comet that landed outside his Maniac Mansion 20 years ago or the two sentient tentacles running around the premises, right? Just in case, though, Dave picks two friends (out of seven in total - Dave is a popular guy!) and ventures into Ron Gilbert's classic point & click adventure, which reshaped the whole genre and later inspired a little sequel called Day of the Tentacle.

tinyE: Should I play these in order?

Secret
and then #2
and then Curse?
They definitely pick up the story from the previous entries, but I don't think Curse necessarily NEEDS the first two to make sense or be enjoyed. They're pretty casual games by adventure game standards and not super serious about plot threads and continuity or whatever.

ssokolow: I remember reading somewhere that the original goal of GOG was to re-release Amiga classics for modern audiences, but negotiations to license the Kickstart ROMs fell through.
avatar
pykman: Oh man I would love to see that happened! It is sad that we have a technology, kickstarter and emulators are commercialy avalible but the games aren't if I'm correct. To be 100% legal you would have to buy old disc copies and those won't stand a test of time so digital is the only way. In years to come we will thank pirates for preserving them ;-)
It's already happened. The licensed games included with C64 Forever often have cracking group intros on them because the rightsholders no longer have the means or the will to provide official releases and the person I talked to from Cloanto was well aware of the irony involved in violating the cracking groups' copyrights on the premise that they won't sue because they'd be admitting to criminal activity in the process.

GOG Bear, you’re viciously destroying my wallet! And I love it! :D

StingingVelvet: I don't think Curse necessarily NEEDS the first two to make sense
There's also a chance it will make LESS sense if you've played the previous games. ;P

(Personally I'd still recommend to play them in order though.)

Tubey84: Never thought it'd happen, assumed licencing issues or something.
avatar
ciemnogrodzianin: That's the reason I'm considering buying the game now. It looks too good to be true. I'm afraid of scenario similar to the "Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth"... :|
That, Simon the Sorcerer 4 and Re-Volt are my biggest bummers for missing. :(
avatar
Elmofongo: Still waiting for some goddamn Ubisoft games already.

Where's Rainbow Six 3?! Dark Messiah of Might and Magic, and the remaining Splinter Cell games?
avatar
fortune_p_dawg: i love dark messiah of might and magic. great, visceral combat.

there's some rumblings of assassin's creed 2 and 3 arriving here at some point if those interest you.

i don't believe i typed "ion storm" instead of "ion maiden." total brain fart.
where did you hear rumblings about assassins creed 2 and 3?
Is The Curse of Monkey Island only in english? Why? Where is the spanish version and the excellent castillian dub? :(
avatar
StingingVelvet: Great releases, bought them ASAP to support more Lucas classics.

It would be REALLY NICE if GOG included the original versions of Monkey 1 and 2, since they have different intros and some other quirks.
Turn on classic mode. In intro it's not possible though, if the intro is looking at the island and credits.

XYCat: did Curse of the monkey island go up from 5.99 to 6.99 while I was having a nap?
Yes, it seems to have done so. Price in the bundle is the same. I bought that one since I didn't own them on pc.

Thank you, GOG! This is like a dream come true!
Awesome!! =)
I immediately bought The Curse of Monkey Island.

Spanish subtitles would be a nice addition.

SirPrimalform: Unexpected! Anyone know yet if it's just stuck in ScummVM?
In both cases the games are marked as "This game is powered by ScummVM." on the gamecards - in a really small font and in the most awkward position possible - right above the GOGmixes which get no love at all...
...but I digress. It would seem "Yes" is the answer to your question. Otherwise Disney would have had to spend money to build an in-house solution. ...And we all know how much Disney has to struggle to push copyright laws to expand their boundaries even further- ...but I digress.
wow! Awesome releases GOG.

Congratulations!

Now...for Nocturne, Blair Witch Games, Lomax, Powerslave, Hexen, Ecstatica & 2 and the Discworld games!

I must admit GOG, you guys impressed me today
What's up with the CoMI price/discount musical chairs? First it was €5.99, now it's €6.99, I bought it at €5.29 (€6.99) but now it's €4.49 (€6.99)

Could you make up your mind, GOG, please?

Sure I could wait for a bigger discount, but this is fricking curse of Monkey island. Not day one, since that was yesterday, but first opportunity I got I bought it, and it will be mine forever.
