The caravan has all my friends / They'll stay with me until the end

The Banner Saga 2, which continues the captivating tale of your people's perilous journey, is available now for Windows and Mac, DRM-free on GOG.com.

You knew that your choices would come back to haunt you, didn't you. But you made them anyway, because that's what Viking leaders do. Many have died, and more will perish still, yet the caravan must press on. The future holds a thin promise of salvation but the present requires sacrifices, gut-wrenching decisions, brutal turn-based encounters, and a watchful eye over all your caravan's needs. New characters, a new race of Horseborn, and a more complex story will make your journey even more challenging and rewarding than before, while your wise leadership skills shall once again prove just as important as your tactical prowess.

Continue your epic march through this vast Viking land of legends in The Banner Saga 2, DRM-free on GOG.com. Those entranced by the evocative Soundtrack should pick it up either separately or as part of the Deluxe Edition.

Choices you made in The Banner Saga carry over to the sequel. If you haven't played it yet, this is the perfect time to begin your Banner Saga and grab the original for 50% off until May 2, 2:59 PM UTC.

In the press:
"As beautiful and tactical as the first, but with greater variety in combat and story" - IGN
"A gorgeous, challenging strategy game that's starting to tell one hell of a story" - Kotaku
Good to have it here, even if i am somewhat still pissed at Stoic for their stance on DRM and the previously pre-order exclusives from the first game.

Brought it at full price, now lets hope once and for all that they get their head straight for the 3rd installment, my patience is running thin.

I'm in an odd position. Back when the first game came out I was still juggling between Steam and here, so I've finished The Banner Saga but on the Steam version. Now that I'm GOG-only, I want to get this here, but I have no desire to buy and replay the first game. Is there any way to get my save from one version to the next? I already know the answer, I'm just hoping I'm wrong. :-P

gamesfreak64: okay that sounds fair enough, thanks for the reply.

JudasIscariot: Any Linux distro does not call home on its own for the most part, it's the programs you install on your Linux distro that do the calling home thing :)
Strictly speaking, Debian installs a program called popularity-contest that, if you allow it (it's opt-in), will phone home with a list of the packages you've installed.

The statistics that are recorded are made available at:

I don't know about that, but you can choose from some "pre-generated" starts.

Do they give the choices right there at the beginning of who lived and who died? That sort of thing?

Back when the game was supposed to be Steam only, I'm pretty sure the devs mentioned that you WOULD be able to import your DRM free version post-game save state into the Steam sequel.

I'd assume you could be able to do it in the other direction as well. Obviously wait for confirmation from someone who has tried it but I think you should be okay to do the import, or maybe copy / paste from the Steam install save directory?

I know this game had a weird save location, so it might take some digging - back before they issued a patch that allowed you to have several playthroughs running at once, I had to hunt the thing down! I wanted to make sure that if I started a new playthrough, I had my original choices backed up (they were the ones I knew I'd want to import in a future game, but I liked the game so much I wanted to play again - which prior to a patch would have overwritten my save game!).

I can let you know the save game location if you want - I'll track it down in the next few - or I might have even eventually found it and posted it in the game subforum.

EDIT

Here's the default save location, at least on a Win 7 computer:

C:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\TheBannerSaga... a subfolder or two deep in there

You may have to show hidden files to see AppData... and this file path was for Win 7 - I imagine it's similar for other Windows OSes

Might be different on the Steam install, but I wouldn't be surprised if you can import or copy / paste those files into your GoG install of Part 2.

Thanks for the detailed response! If anything, it's worth a shot, and like you mentioned, perhaps manually copying the save would work. I need to know what happens to everyone!

Luned: Sorry, Banner Saga 2. The party started without you and almost all the goodies are gone. Nothing left for you from my wallet this week!

P.S. I guess it took you so long to get here because you had to fight through all the pirates on the Steaming Sea to get to the safety of GOG Harbor, huh?
A +1 for the funny line of the day :D

Licurg: These guys trying to rip off Candy Crush Saga again ?
Is that you tinyE? ;)

Celton88: I understand people being upset about how Stoic initially handled the situation and not making any plans for a DRM free version. I do think they should be commended for. How quickly they pivoted when fans made their voices heard. I think that kind of behavior should be rewarded, not shunned. Also, unless I'm mistaken this is an earlier release than number 1. That took a while to come out.
No.1 took around 4 weeks for a legit drm free to come out after "technical difficulties" --- Stoic...

MIK0: Another bummer. Backers get the normal version but the soundtrack is overly priced. 9$ for an mp3 only soundtrack is really high. For the fist game they gave a bandcamp code so I guess it doesn't change much that they are trying to rip off people on GOG.
The Banner Saga soundtrack: https://austinwintory.bandcamp.com/album/the-banner-saga
The Banner Saga 2 soundtrack: https://austinwintory.bandcamp.com/album/the-banner-saga-2
Question is - is it Stoic or the musician though?

RayRay13000: And I still haven't played the first one. Maybe when the next game (assuming "Chapter 3" is still getting made) comes out I'll jump right in.
Same here, i bought BS 1 about a year ago but had no desire to play it yet. So i can wait a few more years before i buy BS 2. :D

Enebias: Ah, The Banner Saga 2. I will buy it for sure, but I will reserve the developers the same treatment they reserved to me by considering it as a second-class game. I will grab it 75% off at least, no less.
A certain kind of stupidity requires a certain kind of reward, and buying at full price would be an insult to the intelligence of DRM-free customers. Feel free to be offended, and enjoy your Steam-un-piratable copies in the meantime.

Strange how fast ideas can change when things go bad.
wish i could upvote more. oh well.

given what's come to light in this thread, i'm in the same boat now. [and that's too bad, i really rather like the art style of the banner saga.]

this is how i feel about armello, too. alas.

indie guys! i want to support you, but stop being silly, please. [i want to support you more than i want to support aaa developers, because at least you're still making games i'm interested in, in genres that matter to me, unlike aaa developers who insist on still making brown, military shooters.]

lol. $50?! for a gog key!?

whhhaaaaat.

i guess they want to make their money several times over in case of "filthy pirates."

$50 was the trilogy tier.

ok. that's less crazy.

i thought that was just "hey! we're kickstarting part 2! pay some crazy price if you want it drm free!"

To be fair, the provided GOG keys for first part too if asked. So the phrase you quoted must be read like "If you are a backer at $50 and up (and so entitled to part 2 and 3), and you’d like a GoG key for Banner Saga 2 - then please send us a KS message and we’ll get you your key."

QueenFrostIX: They didn't add achievements in the GOG version when the game has them on Steam. GOG users treated as garbage again, groundbreaking.
avatar
gamesfreak64: i have a steam account mostly casualgames (small but nice games)
these games cant be compared to real gameslike we have here, but the casualgames are fun nontheless.

As far as i know these achievemnest will be put online at steam. meaning you ned a connction to put them there, i thought we at GoG the more old fashioned and 'grown up' who played since the 286 pc... dont need achievenments, or dumb tradingcards and more stuff like that.
Problem is that if you want to add some achievenmenst or similar stuff vhances might be the game wont work: i have order of the trone and that seems to be trying to connect to achievements in the galaxyclient, at least thats what the error claims. I downlaoded the client but the achievenments was greyed out (maybe not incorporated)
Anyway, the point is : if you have games that arent multiplayer online or mmo, i believen extras like hof and achievenments and other silly things arent needed in a good game, to me these seem to fit more to younger kids, up to 15 or 16.

Why in heavens name should we want to show off the 1 billion coins collected? or show a nice cup with your login name next to a png or animgif in the HOF on a server like steam?
Sorry but i dont get that so thats why i dont fancy nor favor extra stuff in any game: games are games if you want achievements or so the buy casualgames on steam or play free online casual games at steam and your achivenments will be saved on the big cloud for anyone to be seen.

Local achievements on your own pc is also redundant cause we will be the only ones to see these.
Hih scores aswell: as long as its not online in the big cloud and its not on a machine in a 711 (arcade games in old fashioned box with big score list) it has no use.
Finally: i dont feel the urge or need to show my gazillion scores to show off how godly i game :D
I can understand that young kids might need that, but grownups who need confirmation by having achievenments or highscores online? nah thats nothing for me.
I am old fashioned gamer local on my pc , maybe a lan with family but thats it, no mass online games.
It's not about how useful something is but if the game has achievements everywhere else, it should have them here too. Same treatment is what I'm really asking for.
Of course this has to be instabought from everybody how wants to see a synchronous release next time...
