L-look at you, hacker. A pathetic creature of meat and bone. Panting and sweating as you search for your wallet. How fast can you purchase a perfect, immortal game?

System Shock, the breakthrough FPS/RPG hybrid - one of the most influential video games ever produced - is back and enhanced, premiering DRM-free on GOG.com. Get 20% off the title, or 40% off if you already own System Shock 2.

On release, System Shock forever changed the face of action gaming - it ushered an era of storytelling, choices, and RPG elements unlike ever before - directly influencing all-time classics like Deus Ex and Bioshock.
Today, the legend returns in better shape than ever.

System Shock: Enhanced Edition now comes with official support for resolutions up to 1024x768 (compared to the original 640x480), and a native 854x480 widescreen mode. Gameplay is streamlined with a toggleable mouselook mode, including more intuitive inventory and item management. Combined with assorted bug-fixes and remappable controls, System Shock is now truly enhanced. Still, some gaming experiences are truly worth preserving, so you can also return to the authentic 90's gameplay with System Shock: Classic - ready for modern systems, completely unaltered in all other aspects, and available in both the CD and Floppy editions!

Gnostic: I remember quite a number of GoGer are clamoring about System Shock.

So any good things I should know about it to overcome its age?
avatar
JudasIscariot: The Enhanced Edition gets rid of a lot of the 90's clunkiness regarding the UI so it's like a brand new game now :)

In any case, the first System Shock has tons of secret doors so it would behoove you to look for them like you would in an old-school shooter, read the logs for clues, and check your mini-map :)

Also, watch out for berserk patches :)
So since Night Dive and probably GOG aswell poured their blood, sweat, and tears into getting BOTH System Shock games out of IP purgatory and here on GOG.

I think I know the next game that they should definately tackle and thats SWAT 4, another game made by Irrational Games.

And I don't if that game is in IP Copyright hell more so than both System Shock games combined.

Slegnor: I cant get this to stay running for more than 7 seconds.
It crashes to desktop every time.
If I let it run its course, it crashes on the intro movie just after it says "New Atlanta"
If I use esc/left mouse to skip everything I can get to the main menu but it crashes after a few seconds.

Rather annoyed as SS2 works fine

Win7x64, Nvidia 570, i7-4790k.

HunchBluntley: It's a known issue for some players that's being worked on by Night Dive and GOG. See this thread for some things to try (and maybe post your error logs, etc., there, so they can narrow down the problem's cause[s]).
I figured out what the issue was.
The Raptr / AMD Gaming Evolved app was causing SS to crash.
No pun intended, but I'm shocked by how good this game is... I've struggled to play it for over than 20 years, and it's SO GOOD with the better controls and support for high resolutions.
Looks like the game was not as much popular on the release day on Steam as on Gog .

( or everyone already bought it from here )

It has a lot bigger games to compete with on Steam.

Steam-only gamers have bad taste, they probably prefer DOTA, TF2 or CS:GO.

Typical response from an ignorant&pretentious GOG cultist. Have you played even a single one of them? Or acknowledge the fact steam has 6000 games-so the competition is 6 times bigger and much much much more varied then what GOG catalogue could offer?

Playing the same maps over and over again (which is exactly what DOTA/TF2/CS is) against the same kiddies shouting profanities (or Brazilians) (ie the average Steam gamer) through mics isn't my idea of fun. Steam has the worse and most toxic fanbase you'll ever see in gaming. Not even on Xbox 360 will you see anything as bad as the DOTA 2 community.

Lol "varied", vast majority of games on Steam are shovelware, same thing as Apple store.

No one over the age of 14 uses Steam as their only platform for PC games.

SHOCK!!! SURPRISE!!!

An old classic game is released in a store which is known for selling old classic games, and in one which is known for selling new games.... and surprisingly it sell better in the store where the customer base is looking for old classical games... not to say anything about it being released there 1 month earlier, so the customers who would most likely buy the game had already done so when it was released in the other store... who would have guessed!

Can someone please tell me, why System Shock 1+2 are available for Linux on Steam but not here?
The Humble Store package provides DRM free for Windows and DRMed via Steam for Linux and Mac too, why?
https://www.humblebundle.com/store/p/systemshock_pack_storefront

It seems like the users of the DRM-free OS constantly get directed towards Steam-DRM...

System Shock 1 is still Windows-only on Steam. Don't believe the badly-made Humble Store page.

As for System Shock 2, I guess that because it was released on Linux before GOG started supporting the OS and they probably haven't gotten around to it yet.
