System Shock: Enhanced Edition now comes with official support for resolutions up to 1024x768 (compared to the original 640x480), and a native 854x480 widescreen mode. Gameplay is streamlined with a toggleable mouselook mode, including more intuitive inventory and item management. Combined with assorted bug-fixes and remappable controls, System Shock is now truly enhanced. Thank you GOG and NDS for getting it here. When I bought it on CD back in the day my computer was not powerful enough to ran it in full res (640x480?) and I had to run it in 320x200 I think, Because of that I never completed the first level. When I got a computer powerful enough then other games took my time.

Much respect for the GOG PR team, they always do brilliant press releases! I look forwards to the humorous announcements at least as much as the games themselves!
I may get downvoted for this, but GoG advertises (as they do every game) this by putting DRM-Free in the OP (premiering DRM-free on GOG.com) but did the original game actually have any DRM?
Another game I've been waiting to see here for quite a while. Being able to do a full System Shock series run in between chewing through a pile of Gold Box items and Id shooters should make for a nice change of pace.

XD That's actually not a bad question. My only possible retort would be if other vendors have it with their DRM stuck onto it at which point I think GOG would have a good reason to make note of DRM free.

I really doubt it; it's just PR-speak, mentioning "DRM-free" whenever they can because that's what they want to be fully associated with.
So how this game holds up in 2015?

The people who are currently giving it 5 stars seem to be more interested in writting nostalgia filled essays about how this game blew their mind in the 90's rather then how it holds up today.

IronArcturus: So GOG finally got the first System Shock! So does this game only use a glide wrapper, or is there an OpenGL/DirectX mode to use instead?
avatar
zorach: The Voodoo came out in 1996. System Shock came out in 1994. It predates widespread consumer 3D; software rendering only.
But doesn't GOG's version of System Shock use glide? Or is there a way to use OpenGL instead? I want to make sure it has a windowed mode, since games that use glide have no windowed mode unfortunately.

Dev_Chand: Hmm.. what do you think about the rest of the changes in the enhanced edition?
I don't know, haven't played the enhanced version. Widescreen is nice I guess, don't know how intuitive the inventory is.
I also finished the game a few years back using Dosbox, no mods, as I got stuck on my first playthrough when the game was still relatively new.

GOG's version has two versions; the enhanced which supports windowed mode and the classic original, which uses DOSBox.

apehater: yeah, thats really great ... for night dive ... i'm sure its worth 10 bucks
here is a little quote from kolya and no money from me night dive [..]
Uh.. I don't know why you're angry.

If I understood correctly:
1- the game was in the grey "abandonware" area.
2- fans improved it and offered it fully for free (illegally, even if nice).
3- a company bought the rights, so the game lost its "abandonware" status.
4- fans had to remove the download.

Does it seem so strange?
Did ND ask compensation or steal their project?
Can't they transform it in an unofficial patch as suggested?
I'm puzzled..

So which API does the enhanced version use? Is it still using a hardware mode?
Instabuy! Thank you GOG and Night Dive!

That's the thing though, I don't think it's sold digital anywhere else (wondering why they didn't put digital premiere). Just curious.
Thank you GOG. Maybe I can finally finish it this time.
