L-look at you, hacker. A pathetic creature of meat and bone. Panting and sweating as you search for your wallet. How fast can you purchase a perfect, immortal game?

System Shock, the breakthrough FPS/RPG hybrid - one of the most influential video games ever produced - is back and enhanced, premiering DRM-free on GOG.com. Get 20% off the title, or 40% off if you already own System Shock 2.

On release, System Shock forever changed the face of action gaming - it ushered an era of storytelling, choices, and RPG elements unlike ever before - directly influencing all-time classics like Deus Ex and Bioshock.
Today, the legend returns in better shape than ever.

System Shock: Enhanced Edition now comes with official support for resolutions up to 1024x768 (compared to the original 640x480), and a native 854x480 widescreen mode. Gameplay is streamlined with a toggleable mouselook mode, including more intuitive inventory and item management. Combined with assorted bug-fixes and remappable controls, System Shock is now truly enhanced. Still, some gaming experiences are truly worth preserving, so you can also return to the authentic 90's gameplay with System Shock: Classic - ready for modern systems, completely unaltered in all other aspects, and available in both the CD and Floppy editions!

timppu: Nice! A good game, I like it more than the sequel (at least with the mouselook mode which this version apparently also contains).

timppu: Errr, really? I'd say it is a cult classic with devoted followers, but that's all. It is nowhere near as influential as, say, Super Mario Bros, Baldur's Gate or Morrowind.

Anyway, a good game, especially for the atmosphere. As long as you can get over the rather crude pseudo-3D graphics (and why wouldn't you).
This was a very influential game. It was the first FPS/RPG hybrid and you'll find many of it's elements (first appearing in this game) in many of the games you've enjoyed since and now. Games like the Deus Ex series, the Thief series, The Elder Scrolls series, the Bioshock series, Fallout 3 and up, Dead Space, Borderlands, The S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series, Dishonored and many, many others owe their heritage to System Shock 1. So many of the gameplay elements of this game have been used in one form or another in tons of other games since.
I can't buy it now, but as soon as the capital controls are out, this is in.
Thanks GOG.

mk47at: Great news, but...

It's too bad that there isn't a Linux version, again. System Shock 2 is still missing the Linux version that is part of Steam's offer.

Edit: Ok. I've read some things about the way the enhanced version works. It seems to be an improved version of the system shock loader. Which means it will only work on Window. But we are still missing the Linux version of System Shock 2!
It still doesn't take away from the fact that there *should* be official Linux versions for both SS1 and SS2, but SS2 does work quite happily under WINE on OS X and Linux.

I've also been testing this out and the Enhanced Edition also works under Wineskin in OS X (WINE 1.7.51, Native Mac Driver enabled, GLSL=disabled). The "Classic" Edition should work just fine in the DOSBox environment of your choice.

Not sure if I consider it as a RPG even though you can enhance some of your abilities with those add-ons, but anyways... I consider it more like an action-adventure.

The sequel (SS2) maybe is a bit more of an action-RPG (not the Diablo-kind, but a 3D action game having RPG qualities in it...). It is a fine line and YMMV, I guess...

Seriously GOG, an e-mail with "Your wish is our command"?
Awesome to see another classic game brought back from the dead! Sadly, it will never silence all of the "GOG doesn't release classic games anymore" people either - who don't actually monitor the real statistics for classic game releases here showing that they do in fact do so. :)

HiPhish: Mac- and Linux version when?
avatar
mk47at: Probably never. The link that Judas posted makes it sound like it is based on System Shock Loader, which means that it will only work on Windows. :-(
The EE works fine so far in Wineskin on my Mac. I've tried changing resolutions, and saving/loading games and everything works for the most part. Mind you, I've only just started the first level.
Look at that box o'goodies! Great work GOG and Night Dive Studios, ridiculously good release! +1

ShadowOwl: Whoops, just go two identical newsletters GOG?

"System Shock premieres on GOG.com - the legend is back, better than ever."
"Your wish is our command - System Shock premieres on GOG.com."
Me too. It's because they send the second one to all the people that voted for the game on the wishlist (I guess).

JudasIscariot: I tested an internal build with Wine on Mint 17.2. This is the stock WINE configuration that comes with the OS, nothing sourced or added on my own and it worked out of the box. Your results may vary with different Wine versions etc. etc.
So given that many of GOG's (non-DOSBox/ScummVM) Linux releases are WINE-based, is there any chance that QA might test it under different Ubuntu/Mint configurations and release a proper Linux version? Or are you waiting to see if Night Dive supplies a Linux binary of the Windows loader?

fronzelneekburm: Would be nice if gog could add an additional Super Ultra Classic Redux Version (that being the floppy version, if only for that awesome rendition of the System Shock theme during the intro that wasn't on the CD version)
Do you know what are the main differences between the original DOS version and the CD (Win?) version?
Is the MIDI music still there?

Viewing the GOG frontpage this morning, is a sight to behold! :D

What a GREAT surprise! The moment my eyes saw the SS banner, the left hand already took the initiative and placed it in the cart.. only to get the "Vythonaut, we are waiting for the verification of your payment attempt - please be patient as this may take a moment".

Shoot! Something's wrong with Paypal again. I'll try again later! :D
I am so happy you guys finally got this, just wanted to say I love you, and don't stop believing!

OT: It's always weird to see so many people having problems with PayPal when in my 13 years of using it I've only had one minor problem and one not-so-minor problem.

Something to do with you being in Greece and the banking restrictions? Or have you been using PayPal without any problems even so?

outstarwalker: Hey guys, I will host our special guests on GOG.com Twitch tomorrow, so check out twitch.tv/gogcom at 4 PM GMT / 18:00 CEST for us. I'll probably mute my microphone for the duration of roundtable session, so the playthrough will be done in the background, not disturbing the conversation of devs.

Hope you will like it! :)
Outstar-chan is always so reliable.
