Cutting through the galaxy.

Sword of the Stars: Complete Collection, the comprehensive package of turn-based 4X gameplay, real-time space battles, and intergalactic exploration, is now available, DRM-free on GOG.com with a 50% launch discount.

If you happen to find yourself in a space fight, bringing a sword is hardly going to do you any good. How about a fleet of sword-shaped spaceships, though? Yeah, those might actually provide you with the firepower needed to conquer the treacherous far reaches of the galaxy and establish your own interstellar empire.

Sword of the Stars: Complete Collection is all about carefully building an armada that feels unique, unleashing it upon the unsuspecting galaxy through the magic of faster-than-light travel, and blowing your opponents to smithereens in real-time space combat. Since the inclusion of the three DLCs, there are six playable alien factions in total, each with their own preferred technologies and ships, as well as distinct physiology. Player-designed ships and a huge variety of scenarios promise to keep you engaged for dozens of hours, as you hop between star systems, trading, raiding, colonizing, and laser-blasting your way to intergalactic domination.

Build a spacefaring empire and cut the galaxy any way you like with your Sword of the Stars: Complete Collection, DRM-free on GOG.com. The 50% launch discount will last until March 15, 4:59 PM GMT.

IronArcturus: Also, is there a way to get rid of the End Turn timer? It keeps counting down for 3 seconds for some reason.
Yes, in your Profile.ini in the Profiles folder :
http://wiki.swordofthestars.com/sots1/Profile.ini
[GameOptions]
EndTurnDelay=3

But you might want to consider to keep it. Unless you're more of an "action" player that takes less than 30 seconds per turn, it's generally a good idea before submitting a turn to think about it for a few seconds...
avatar
ElTerprise: You're welcome. Was curious about that myself :)

I don't know - haven't found a possibility for that yet...
avatar
IronArcturus: Is there a list of shortcuts in the game? Like a keyboard shortcut for the End Turn button? Also, is there a reason why after every turn it says "sys-tem up-date..."
In the Options => Key Bindings (though some seem to be missing)
In the Manual
On the wiki :
http://wiki.swordofthestars.com/sots1/Hotkeys

Why wouldn't it say that? Helps you to know when the other players have finished their turns and combats...
avatar
ElTerprise: I guess it's due to the fact that The Pit is self-published here while SOTS is published by Paradox Interactive...
That being said i generally have to agree - that's not acceptable. Same with the missing Mac and Linux builds for it...
avatar
IronArcturus: I still don't understand why SotS:The Pit still has multiple installers. One would think they would have some kind of "complete" version with all the DLC packed into one installer...
How would you disable some of the DLC's if you don't use Galaxy?
avatar
haydenaurion: So how does this compare to Sins of a Solar Empire or Master of Orion?
SoaSE is fully real time
MoO1 is turn based with instanced turn based combat?
SotS1 (and 2) is turn based with both movement processing and instanced real time combat at the end of each turn.

IronArcturus: Is there a way to set waypoints in SotS? I don't see it listed in the shortcut menu.
Yeah, that's one of the Key Bindings not shown in Options.
Use Ctrl :

Grargar: They are in the same universe, but once again, not the same game. One is a 4x4, the other a roguelike. One is new and this is old.

ggf162: DRM-free cars when?
DRM-free hookers when?

Joking aside, the "4x" term comes from Alan Emrich, writing for Computer Gaming World, about MoO1 :
"MicroProse's Strategic Space Opera is Rated XXXX!"

Wow, thanks for all the info! :)
Looks like a "must play" game for me.
Bought!
avatar
mrkgnao: Thank you. Good to know.
Still, probably not for me, as I understand it does not have a story-driven campaign.
avatar
BlueTemplar: It has multiple scenarios though.
The (in-game) story is mostly in the form of racial descriptions and clues in overall design.

avatar
mrkgnao: The game page reads "Choose from a variety of scenario campaigns".

What does this mean?
How many campaigns are there?
How long are they?
Are they story-driven?
avatar
BlueTemplar: Here's a thorough description of scenarios :
http://wiki.swordofthestars.com/sots1/Scenarios
Thank you. You make a compelling case. I'll think about it some more and watch some videos. Perhaps I might get tempted.

If you're a fan of GalCiv2 then you'll really like this game! I just found out about it during the GOG sale. :P

I haven't played any of the GalCiv, I only own GalCiv1, which I'll try some day.
avatar
BoxOfSnoo: Um, what? I own and have played both. I recommend both.
avatar
Maxvorstadt: I mean Civilization II: Test of time! :-)
Ah! That whooshing sound you hear was me, totally not getting that. :D

rampancy: Soooo...anyone tried this out on WINE?
I tried it (wine-1.9.5 on Mint 17.3).
It didn't work.

Then I tried with a clean WINEPREFIX, just to fail again (before and after vcrun2005 winetricks addition, suggested as required on http://wiki.swordofthestars.com/sots1/Alternative_OS).
Maybe I'll try again tomorrow.

If anyone could set GOG edition to run on wine, please let us know how!

UPDATE: Good news! I've set the game to run!

I've posted the full steps in the game's sub-forum.

Cool, I've heard good things of this game. Or course I've never played it like most games I own on steam and now own on GOG :)

I'd want a Groundhog day to get them all played but how many games would take more than 24 hours to play (then your back to a game state before you started to play).

Groundhog week, that's what I need.

---- edit ---
I'm referring to that Bill Murry film if anyone is scratching their heads over my post

Space Game Junkie did a play through of Sword of the Stars complete. If you want to see it in action, check it out.

https://www.spacegamejunkie.com/

It handles the Space Combat very well. The lore is interesting, the races all have their own unique adaption for FTL travel, plus the randomly generated tech trees are nice as well.

Must buy!

Kirben: Where is the 1.5.5 patch for Sword of the Stars: The Pit? the patch was released over a year ago on Steam, but we are still waiting for that patch on GOG.

How can GOG find the time to release a new game from the developer, but not the time to update their older games?
Wow, that's very unacceptable.

That patch fixes items that don't work properly, etc. I already read in the forums that Kerberos sent them the patch along with Steam and it still hasn't been released. That's been over a year ago. I've contacted GOG about this and hope I they get on with releasing that. That's unfair to people who have invested all that money into The Pit on GOG while Steam folks get them.

I wouldn't recommend his Let's Play -
(unlike his multiplayer game with the devs that is full of interesting information otherwise)
- because while it's understandable that he doesn't know how to play the game on his second (?) try,
it seems that he hasn't even bothered to read tutorial, read the manual, or watch the tutorial videos beforehand.

An IMHO much better Let's Play / Tutorial has been done by 100Roach :

Insta-buy. Probably one of the easiest GOG purchases of the last two years, for me.

Added SotS The Pit version 1.5.5 to the wishlist. Mind my mistake on the version number in the wishlist entry, I meant 1.5.5, NOT 1.1.5: https://www.gog.com/wishlist/games/sword_of_the_stars_the_pit_version_115

To gog: If you guys at gog do indeed have 1.5.5, then update the game please. I'd rather continue to purchase games here than from Steam just because the gog versions are behind (nearly a YEAR in this case) on updates. Thank you.
