Wild Dr. West

Subterrain, the top-down sci-fi horror/survival set in an underground Martian city, is now available DRM-free on GOG.com, with a 33% launch discount.

What do you mean they cut the power? How could they cut the power, man, they are bloody mutants!
And yet the power is out. In fact this whole underground, damp, god-forsaken colony is out. But Dr. West is not out. He is actually pretty deep in a giant heap of trouble, as the lone survivor of this mysterious, terrifying calamity that befell the whole settlement. Out is where he wishes he was.

You'll need to make the most out of whatever you can salvage, then craft some half-decent gear, research new items, and tread carefully in the dark corridors of this Martian colony. Constantly evolving mutants are roaming the hallways ahead and your flashlight beam may not manage to reveal their ugly faces quickly enough. You must be prepared to blast or slash them to pieces and then lick your wounds in safety. This is a persistent, randomly-generated world that does not care for your survival. As the infection starts slowly creeping up on you, escape is the only option, if you don't want to succumb to it.

Use your aim, your resourcefulness, and your courage to escape the mutant-infested corridors of Subterrain, DRM-free on GOG.com. The 33% launch discount will last until April 13, 1:59 PM UTC.

GrossorMD: Just like the malfunction(?) in the BG: EE games sale is poor manners as well: for some reason it's cheaper to buy them separatedly than all of them together
Not really. It's just that in the latter case, the discount will only be applied on the checkout screen.

I stand corrected, then. On both counts.

So I guess this wasn't day one release? Why the holdup?

vicklemos: The other day I was thinking about giving Teleglitch a go but, as usual, the "oldschool" flesh and boned couch partner wasn't there ;(
I know, singleplayer only, but it's hard to gather some dude to play with these days.

omega64: Shame on them. If you can get a co-op partner to join you play Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime though.
Amazing.

I have a friend that comes to my house once every few weeks to play local co-op games. :)
Thanks for the tip. This wacky lovers game surely is an eye-popper, huh?

Real life friends? Then you're so lucky, octodude. In the best way possible.
Miss when me and my twin bro spent countless hours playing a bazillion of games, from Trap Gunner to Food Fight ;D
Yup, we grew up ;P
First thing that came to my mind as soon as I saw the screenshots was the PSX game "Loaded" (& Reloaded). But from what I read, it has nothing in common. Looks very interesting but that toilet mechanics seem to be too much for me. I mean, what if this dude gets diarrhea? Oh... :P

Anyway, I'm off to view some gameplay videos & read some reviews about it.

GrossorMD: EDIT: Scratch that. The discount is the same
Yes, it sems I was wrong about the Insomnia price. I edited my post as well.

Really? My first impression was: old Alien Breed games, or Take no Prisoners.

Yep! To be honest, I didn't know neither Alien Breed nor Take no Prisoners - just saw them on YT. I guess I've never been a big fan of top down shooters, so I missed quite a few games through the years. And as far as I can remember, in the recent years I've played only Shadowgrounds which was part of some Humble Indie Bundle (normally I don't think I would buy it).

Regarding Subterrain, just checked it out in detail and I think I'll pass, at least for now, as I have a feeling that I will lose interest very fast and i won't even finish it so that would be wasted money for me.
I played Take no prisoners to death when I was a kid and Subterrain is not a TNP clone.

While it can sometimes remind you of TNP while blasting away at mutants it's far more tense due to food, thirst and rest gauges combined with contamination, stamina and things like bleeding and fractures. It's tense, nail biting stuff and the research and crafting is very well balanced. I always feel like I'm just on the brink of not having enough resources to craft what I need.

Games don't hold my interest all that long these days but I've got 40 hours logged on this and I'm middle aged with a full time job so if that isn't enough of an endorsement for you I don't know what is.

There are some small UI issues. For example it took me a few hours before I realised you could queue up creating multiple items and a few more hours to realise you could alter the amount of something to produce in one go because the slider doesn't move for certain crafting stations.

Games these days tend to tack on crafting because everyone expects it and the survival horror market has been over-saturated with mediocre offerings.

Subterrain is different. The crafting system fits, it makes sense within the theme of the game.

I guarantee Subterrain will have you shouting "Sh**t Sh***t Sh**t!" as you frantically backpedal away from the mutant who just walked out behind you, fractured your leg and is winding up to deliver a swift dose of permadeath.

Subterrain is 10/10 and a steal at the asking price.

Finally the new games from the Insomnia sale are "released". But why so much delay as the games technically have been ready already more than 2 weeks ago?
In case any of the Blues is lurking: There are several duplicate screenshots in the carousel on the gamecard.

Ditto
I've played A LOT of TNP so the review is all the more helpful.
Picked this up during the insomnia sale. Played 10 hours so far. Really rather atmospheric and does face you with some somewhat mean prioritization dilemmas.

I've been trying to put together some words on what I feel and really can't summarize it in any way. Unlike TubeAlloy I find the combat a bit too slow paced to get that frantic over. I'd go so far as to say combat is an afterthought and isn't all that deep.

In fact, many systems feel somewhat shallow and trite, but still they gather together as a whole into a rather compelling experience.

Can't say I'm having much actual fun, but I keep coming back anyway because in spite of systems on their own seeming rather shallow, it meshes the systems together well into something you just don't want to put down. Tense, confusing and promising you could get that breakthrough you want dangling just out of reach, but hey, you'll make it soon....right?

To those who consider getting the game: Don't expect it to be an action game, you'll be disappointed. But if you want a compelling experience, good atmosphere and a bunch of interlocking systems which keep you wanting to just get that bit more done Subterrain might just be worth picking up.
