Howling at the exploding stars

<span class="bold">Star Wolves 3: Civil War</span>, a tactical strategy/RPG where you fight your way through the surrounding anarchy, is now available, DRM-free on GOG.com, with a 50% launch discount.

The thing about large-scale space conflicts is that, even though they look cool, they usually leave behind a lot of space debris, crippled participating factions, and chaos. This is now the reality of Star Wolves 3: Civil War, where everything is up for grabs among looters, pirates, opportunists, and black market entrepreneurs. You are free to build your own team, follow a non-linear path of missions and open exploration, and take advantage of the anarchy as best suits your needs. The customization options on your ships and companions will further enhance your tactical approach and help you reach deeper into space, where a lone wolf might not dare venture.

Face the intriguing anarchy of space as you head a pack of <span class="bold">Star Wolves 3: Civil War</span>, DRM-free on GOG.com. The 50% launch discount will last until April 26, 2:59 PM UTC.

deonast: I guess we will see if one day the steam valve is shut off and you can't get to your games. Could happen, though currently not likely. After all you are a subscriber not an owner as such.

Impaler26: So what? I don't know if i'll still play games in a few years. :D

And the Star Wolves games are not much fun to play for me anyway so no words on a screen will make me buy them again. :P
Sorry my last comment was really in general not necessarily about Star Wolves. Hmm you must own a lot of games on steam from your comments through the forums. Perhaps time to slow down as you might not get value out of your subscription if you don't play in a few years time.
Well, Impaler26 definitely has a point. I have a bunch of games bought on Steam, and a bunch on GOG as well.
I have re-bought some games on GOG which I already have on my Steam library, but a game has to really click on me in order to do that. A game I find OK at best (as he seems to do Star Wolves) definitely does no qualify.

@deonast - I would not go all the way saying Steam is a subscription service, I think. A lot of the games there don't use the Steam DRM, so you can download them and just run them outside Steam. You don't get the installers, of course, but in these cases a zipped archive usually works.

And on topic - anyone here who actually has played this one? I finished the first, and I found it acceptable, so I would buy the third, especially with this price. So if anyone can say SW3 compares to SW1, they get a virtual beer or two ;)

Does anyone know (and apologies if it's noted earlier - I looked and didn't see it), does this title have "active pause" (where one can pause the game, and while paused, give commands, look around, check the map, etc.)?

TIA
For someone like me, who used to be a real sucker for playing EVE (not any more, just don't have the time to sink into it), I do like games like this. I never bought SW1, and SW2 didn't get a good reception, but I think I might just purchase this one, seeing that GOG have it on offer. It'll keep me occupied until Josh Parnel manages to finish Limit Theory, which looks as if it might be a while.

I believe it does, yes. If you check out a few gameplay vids on youtube, you'll see that the ones playing it do pause it during battles to sort out various commands. Although, don't hold me on that, because I haven't had a chance to play it yet. Even if it doesn't do that, I'm not too bothered :)

I'm interested in that comparison too. When I look at the screen shots from Star Wolves 3 they look quite similar to SW1, only with higher resolution. Is SW3 like SW1 with enhanced graphics or are there any essential improvements in SW3?

Cool.

For the price, I couldn't be arsed to look it up - and went ahead and grabbed it. (I won't hold it on you if it turns out it doesn't <g>).

Cheers
Thank you, GOG!

I've had a good go on the game, and yes, it does have a pause function and also allows you to speed things up during gametime too, which is equally handy. It tends to also pause on events to give you a chance to react to them, which might get annoying for some, but these can be toggled in the menu.

I did a review underneath it, which may seem a bit negative but wasn't meant to be. The game, like many others, does have it flaws, but it is a good space sim and I'm glad I bought it. I may even buy the first one at some point. I can forgive it's strange Eve-like control system and it's occassional bad english translations in the texts because there's a decent game underneath them. So I stand by the 4 stars that I gave it :)

Does anyone have a leftover gift code of Star Wolves 2 and 3 ?
