This game was cool in 1996, when I was 9, but I acknowledge that it was a pretty poor game overall. I'm not getting duped here.

CARRiON.FLOWERS: Hah! Raise your hand if the giant fucking Dianoga scared the shit out of you the first time. Fighting it in those murky trash waters as this giant form starts to take place.
IG-88 is the true terror. Boba Fett was also pretty intimidating especially since he was at the end of a long level. And the Gladiator Droid my god...

I got a distinct feeling I'm going to play through this now.

Splatsch: Why is it this one that good ? (I haven't heard a lot concerning this one I must say :P)
I can only offer my sentiments toward this, but:

-Nostalgia (can't be ruled out but it isn't the only reason by a long shot)
-One of the few 3D-shooters about Star Wars at the time. (can't name another for years)
-Mechanically very sound (my opinion, never had problems)
-Good balance of depth and simplicity (Very much playable through as a kid, but holds up ok even when older)

Also: lots of little background story bits, diverse locations, different forms of gameplay (space battles, ground exploration, speeder bikes...), sensible references to the movies... There was little not to like about the game back in the day.

Also it was a relatively little known game, never as popular as the Jedi Knight series for instance, but it captivated a lot of fans back then. For many this is the first time in ten years or more that they get to practically play the game again.

3. Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire (1996)

Shadows of the Empire was a weird intersection of pop culture and gaming history. Part of the media tie-in extravaganza in the fledgling Star Wars expanded universe that covered books, comics and games, Shadows of the Empire was also one of the first games available for the new Nintendo 64 when it released to much excitement.

But reviews were mixed. Bad controls, less than stellar visuals (that the N64 struggled to run at times), a lacklustre story and bland shooting levels were just some of the glaring flaws that people pointed out. Yet Shadows is still beloved among Star Wars fans for one reason. This was the first level:


One of the first 3D recreations of Empire Strikes Back‘s Battle of Hoth, Shadows‘ first level was so good, so nostalgia inducing, to this day most fans forget that there was actually a terrible game attached to it.

Yes! Keep it up GOG! As an avid Star Wars nerd that even shares a birthday with international Star Wars Day, I can promise I will buy every Star Wars (and D&D, but that's another subject) game you release.
