mistermumbles: I wonder how terribly aged the first game is...

vicklemos: It has only aged inside your mind! :)
I've played Colecovision the other day and it seemed fresh to me (no joke) :P
It has aged pretty badly unfortunately.

I know
I was j/k :(

But I'll buy it once more and play it once more. Nothing beats playing in on today's machinery: better joysticks, new displays, crispier image, other OS, faster stuff. Everything's better. That's a huge plus for me.
I think we should make some comparison photos between playing Star Wars/Lucasfilm games on yersterday's hardware/software and today's. We'll see that's insanely better these days.
Heck I played all those missions on X-Wing games in the most scrutinized way on a crappy 14" display with unsolvable tearing issues, but my Logitech joystick was damn good.
Today I can enjoy it via x360/F710 controller wirelessly on a huge display, with a ton of graphic options; some of the games are on Linux (I know, I'm that guy), we could play those on Steam machines (yeah yeah these guys) and their novel steam controller, butt-in-couch... so comfy it makes me drool.

Gamers don't realize how lucky they are these days :P

To be honest the game would be fine if they would sort the pinball effect. I mean in these games if you hit one side you immediately fling to the other when you try to correct yourself. The sensitivity is pretty bad.

tinyE: Gonna have to wishlist this because I just blew my lunch money on the Sabre Bundle which is really sad because I own EVERY GAME in that bundle on disc, but now I can play them without the disc!

Party on Wayne!

God I'm sad. :P
Party on Garth!

Too shaky, huh? But nonetheless fun to play. I say: revisit it. :)
Just played the first three chapters of RA2, and while it certainly shows its aging FMV roots it's still a very enjoyable on-rails shooter. I'm surprised that it actually works quite well with mouse only, although I died quite a lot in chapter 3's mine shaft level as controlling that falcon seems overly sensitive when it comes to even the smallest mouse movement. I think I shall break out the flight stick and see how it compares.

Yup, it's good fun. :)

Lastly, below is a funny thing I saw in the options menu. If only I could have that kind of speed for all of my other games. ;) Then again, my graphics card only "seems fast enough".
Attachments:
I was playing RA 2 on my brother's in law PC. Until now I can still remember Dart Vader saying: "I will not be impressed until I have under my command the full power to crush the Rebel Alliance" ...Damn - it was 20 years ago..

Anyway - great release. Will pick it later.

Despite its limitations, I really liked Rebel Assault when I was a kid. But I always wanted to play Rebel Assault 2 and never had a chance. Now I do!

But I'll have to wait on this one, considering I just blew over $40 between the Saber and Blaster bundles. That's more than enough games for one day!

htown1980: hmm.. the description says mac but the game card says windows only...

JudasIscariot: Working on that :)
thank you! now i have to work out whether I want to by the games despite my memory being that they weren't very good... :)
Grats GOG, you now have the two games at the very top of my "worst PC games of all time list". Yes Star Wars fans love them. But seriously, you could make "Vomit Cakes" and market them as "Star Wars Wookie Bites" and idiots would buy them, eat them and tell themselves that they like them. No they were not any good, even back in the 90's.

What i don't understand is why i have this strange urge to actually try them again. Just to make sure they're really that bad? It's sort of like how i've actually watched "Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus". Twice.
Now if GOG will bring out "Shadows Of the Empire" which is sort of the "Spiritual successor" to the Rebel Assault Games..
Rebel Assault I had a very nice box artwork:
http://cdn3.spong.com/artwork/s/t/starwarsre288578l/_-Star-Wars-Rebel-Assault-PC-_.jpg

But sadly, these two Star Wars themed railshooters didn't really stand the time, they aged very bad.

Now if you compare it to let's say any other 2D game form LucasArts at the same time (Dark Forces I or any of the adventure games), the Rebel Assault games are ... the graphics are unbeliveable ugly, not only because of the low resolution FMVs and these (pre)rendered things, but maybe because of the color palette? Who knows.

And gameplay wise ... aaaah.

I always tought, that Rebel Assault games were like the Mad Dog McCree games, just like with Star Wars make-up.

Maybe, but SotE is much-much better gameplay-wise.

Only part that has aged badly is the external flight levels. It is A. so hard to control and B. so hard to tell where the edge of the nearest wall or whatever is. I'm thoroughly enjoying the cockpit levels.

Yes, but this game was primary made for a joystick, the mouse control was only the secondary option. The later is especially "wonky" in the flying parts ....

RA2 plays fine with a mouse. The first one, well it plays badly with both lol.
