You can't kill the metal, the metal will live on.

Slain!, a heavy-metal action/platformer full of facemelting gore, is now available, DRM-free on GOG.com for Windows, Mac, and Linux, with GOG Galaxy support for achievements and a 10% launch discount.

Metalheads, sharpen your oversized swords and prepare your sensitive ears. This is the epic, gory, and totally heavy-metal story of Bathoryn, the long-haired hero that decided to storm six creepy-looking towers, home to six terrible overlords. Will you help him wipe the toothy grins off their ugly mugs or will you let him get Slain?

You need to master three deadly weapons, learn their gruesome combos, then figure out which one serves you best in any given situation. Switching between them quickly and timing your attacks perfectly are key to overcoming the cunning traps and the demonic hordes spread across this gothic land. Learn your craft well and your enemies will explode into a deadly bouquet of pixel-art gore. Τake one wrong step and they will get the metallic taste of your blood in their mouths. Probably while listening to the awesome soundtrack, courtesy of heavy-metal legend Curt Victor Bryant. Those bastards.

Steel your heart and hand with heavy-metal and don't let your legend get Slain!, DRM-free on GOG.com. The 10% discount will last until March 31, 6:59 PM GMT.

CharlesGrey: Releasing a game as "finished", when it's clearly not, just leads to all sorts of negative consequences.
Bad marketing decision for sure, possibly jeopardizing the work that must've gone into this title despite the early state it's still in. I'm also gonna wait and see how the patching develops, as it could be a cool game in the end. At least I wish it turns out that way.

What I don't understand is how such a game could have passed GOG's quality control? Aren't they supposed to vet every game before release?
I watched a playthrough of the first 25 minutes or so. Here's a quick verdict of what the player had to say. Talks mostly about it needing tightening of controls, he had no real major complaints. Looks like it plays OK too, albeit the level design seeming very linear and uneventful in my opinion.

IronArcturus: I've noticed that control problems have been mentioned In a lot of reviews for Slain. Have these issues been fixed in the latest patch?
I haven't played it yet, so I don't know about the exact nature of these problems, but it could be that the controls work as intended. Maybe it's meant to play the way it does, if it's inspired by older sidescrollers such as Castlevania.

Some people complained about the controls in Shovel Knight as well, and I thought it was perfectly fine and highly polished.

Worst case, it might just be a matter of getting used to the controls and pacing ( for both games ).
From RPS:

Quote:
"And now, for the part I’d like to never have to write: the game came out with a few technical issues. Judging from the statements on the Steam forum, the devs made a last-minute adjustment which created a new problem they didn’t catch in time. Those who played on release with mouse and keyboard found themselves with terrible control delay which rendered the game extremely frustrating to play. There were also some silly mistakes, like never explaining or listing the controls anywhere in the game. People in the forum are trying to work out what the controls are for themselves, some didn’t even know how to exit the game.

This brought a slew of (legitimate) negative Steam reviews, and those will remain even after the issues have been fixed – and they are really easy to fix, they’re already working on it. Many players won’t give it another chance, and others won’t buy it based on those reviews. The devs explain that they just couldn’t keep delaying it any longer, but this lack of attention really hurts the game, even if all the hard work has already been done. The game can’t be judged for its own flaws and merits, and lots of indies seem to be making these avoidable mistakes. Don’t make me write this again, it makes me really sad to see all that hard work wasted."
A pity that the soundtrack isn't a part of the additional items. A game like this, featuring music I like, would only be enhanced by such an offer.
It's quite inexcusable to release games without available DLCs, especially when other games come here with their respective (deluxe) DLCs. Can we get some consistency here?
Played for a bit today. Controls seemed fine? Totally don't get what the complaints are about.
First patch came through - keyboard controls are still rather unresponsive on a Mac. In the menu as well as during gameplay.

Yep, if it's not included with the game, at least it would be nice to have the option to buy it as a separate "DLC" or whatever.

A pity indeed as they've just lost a sale from me until they offer the Deluxe Edition DLC (that is being offered on Steam) on GOG too.

I may sound a bit harsh, but to be honest I expect to be treated equally regardless of which site I buy the game from.
Still looking at this game as I can't quite get over the fact yet that something that looks so promising turned out the way it is right now. What really kills it for me is that the pixel art looks delicious while the writing is laughably bad.

I mean look at the gameplay footage where some ancient demon lord uses a lazy internet abbreviation "tho" instead of "though" in his speech. Atmosphere insta-drain. On the [url=https://steamcommunity.com/app/369070/discussions/0/385429254934021958/]Steam forums I read of other examples, like "btw" and "thx"! This is just embarrassing.
I hope that the devs will fix the gameplay, because the graphic looks very cool.
Reading the reviews I certainly get the impression something's askew, but I'm not sure what to think when one complains that there are 'no production credits' to sit/click through in order to reach the main menu and play.

Tho’ predates the Net by an age; try a text search for it in http://www.davidhume.org/texts/suis.html

No such excuse for the other two, though.

Oh, I learned something - thanks. I'd argue that whoever did the writing for Slain! was not intending to use the archaic form of the word to fit the game's mood and setting tho' :)
