Totally FREE and massive, like a really big, explosive bird creature.

Shovel Knight: Plague of Shadows, a free and huge expansion to the award-winning NES-style platformer, is available now, DRM-free on GOG.com

Shovel Knight promised and delivered: a core platformer, an NES-style palette, pixel-perfect gameplay, a hero out to save the world and get the girl - but most importantly - a true understanding of what made the classics tick. Following critical acclaim and a hugely successful launch, another promise was made: a significant expansion, free for everyone, excitement. And now it's here.

Shovel Knight: Plague of Shadows expands on nearly every aspect of the original release: there's a new adventure to go on (maybe some romance too), new gameplay mechanics, an alchemy crafting system, new objectives, new bosses, and even new paths, nooks, and crannies in the original levels. It truly is the game anew. Among it all is a new playable character: an old friend, the Plague Knight, offering a completely different style of play. He's an explosive trickster, whose mobility, weapons, and move-set offer new challenges whether you're playing through the classic levels or the new campaign. For a better idea of what's new (and the fascinating design process), check out the dev's blog on the Plague Knight's Mobility Design!

Perhaps we need to review the definition of the word "discount". ;)
Nice free expansion, but you forgot to discount the base game first :P

the game was totally worth the full asking price (for me, anyway). the game has been consistently patched, and supported with new content, bug fixes, and now a whole new campaign. do you people only buy things that are discounted? i'm not saying i'm frivolous with my money, but i don't expect gaming to be a cheap hobby, and to let $3 or $4 stand in the way of a quality experience is just crazy.

but then... at the same time maybe this isn't really your type of game but if it gets discounted you'll give it a fair shake?

I buy a fair amount of games at full price, or at release, etc. My complaint is that they only discount on their preferred platform.

Which I don't use.

Smannesman: I don't see a link to a game page either.
Game link missing, link to the dev's blog broken (http//yachtclub...) and twitch link working. 1 of 3, not too bad considering that obviously nobody cares to test what GOG lets out to the public. ;P

It's not about the discount, it's about the principle of everywhere associated with Steam getting deep discounts EXCEPT for GOG.

It's not exactly fair that we're penalized for not wanting to have to deal with most glorious number one nation Steam.

Edit: For spelling.

I didn't realize the developer gives such special treatment to Steam. Thanks for the heads up. Shovel Knight has been removed from my wishlist.

Some may judge me harshly for this, but to answer the first question, yes, I only buy games when they are discounted, usually heavily. That said, I know the devs of this particular game are very much against large discounts of their work, so all I'm asking for is the same discount that they offered on Steam, which is, I believe, 33% off.

i see what you mean. hell, that's actually pretty aggravating. i don't visit steam so i didn't immediately get the point, but now i do.

do you think it's up to gog or yacht club?

no judgement at all! i was seriously just curious, and didn't catch that it was discounted on steam until now.

Discount discussion aside, I've already played and completed the original version of Shovel Knight, and it's a great game for fans of old-school Jump'n'Runs. Very polished and true to the classics it is based on. My only complaint is, that it was perhaps a bit short for its price point. Should be a much better deal with the new extra content added in.

Thanks to the devs for providing this as a free upgrade, rather than charging extra for it! ( Funny how everyone here seems to take that for granted, and only talks about the discount issue. :P )

How does it compare to other well-known indie platformers / metroidvanias? What makes it special? Is it a hard game? What savegame or checkpoint system does it use (that is, how much progress do you lose on dying, game over, quitting the game)? Thanks for any answers you or anyone else can provide! :)

Not sure about Indies, but it is most closely based on classic Megaman/Rockman games, while also using elements from the old Ducktales, Castlevania or Super Mario games, along with some elements from modern games.

I think there are about 5 checkpoints or so in each level, including one before the boss fight. The difficulty is about average. Probably harder than most modern games, but not nearly as tough as the old games it is based on.

If you die you lose some of the treasure you collected but get one chance to pick it up again ( similar to the Souls games ).

It's a very well-crafted game overall, full of detail, humor and fun gameplay. I'd say it's a good deal for anyone who grew up playing the original 8 and 16-bit sidescrollers. If you don't normally care for the genre, then it's probably not worth the full price, but might still be worth a look if it's ever discounted.

Edit: As for what makes this one special: There's tons of games which attempt to be "retro", but this is one of the few which not only fully captures that spirit of the old classics, but actually outdoes most of them. You can tell the developers love the genre, and know what they're doing.

CharlesGrey: ~snip~
Thanks! Well, my problem is that I'm interested in the genre, but I haven't played the old 8 and 16 bit sidescrollers, I only know (and already own a lot of) today's indie platformers, and what I never liked about platformers back in the days was having a limited number of lives and losing them resulting in me having to replay the whole game or at least repeat long levels from start, so I was wondering how 'hardcore' Shovel Knight is in this regard. Do you make constant progress or are you set back by a lot if you die? Will you have to repeat levels you beat already? Will you have to restart levels from scratch if you die or quit halfway through, and if so, how long is the average level?
