Shadow Watch, a stunningly stylized tactical classic, is available now for Windows, DRM-free on GOG.com

There's a special, timeless aesthetic to Shadow Watch. It stands out from the crowd, there's no doubt about that - but it also looks as good as any modern-day release. For a 15 year old game, that's a nothing short of a feat.

Dive into a comic-book world of interrogation and espionage in Shadow Watch - tactical turn-based gameplay in the spirit of X-Com and the gang, but it aims to keep things simple and varied (rather than in-depth and confounding). The familiar strategy layer is just as rewarding as ever, but it's never unnecessarily complicated and always easy to learn. Still, the real meat is in the fact that tactics are just one part of the experience. Before setting out on your mission you'll have to aptly prepare your team, as well as scout for intelligence, and interrogate your contacts. Your story and the flow of the game will rely on who you talk to, what you get out of them - and what you decide to do with the information.

A special shoutout to awalterj who relentlessly wears the Shadow Watch avatar. You weren't able to grab the game while here, so we thought it's high time to put it on the GOG.com shelf!

Tune in to Twitch.tv/GOGcom tonight for a live showing of this tactical classic in action! ScreamingJoypad is showing it off starting 8pm GMT (10pm CEST, 4pm EDT, 1pm PDT).
Looks really nice, the hand drawn art style and aesthetic always appeals to me as it usually gives the game a timeless quality. From the description Shadow Watch seems to be quite intriguing so wishlisted for now.

Also good to see continuing Ubisoft DRM Free releases on GOG, now its time to bring some missing games from series that are already here like Splinter Cell and Rainbow Six to name a couple. ;)

Oh wow. I heard about it back in the day, but I could never find a phisical copy. Wishlisted for now.

Kardwill: Woah... Shadow Watch? Cool, my CD version didn't work anymore. it's an instagrab. :)

Impaler26: So does this play like the X-COM games? Wishlisted for now, might grab it in a future sale.
avatar
Kardwill: Well, apart that both are turn based tactical games, not really. If I remember correctly, the game is a branching campaign of tactical missions.

You have 6 very specialized preset characters (1 commando, 1 big guy with a shotgun, 1 electronics specialist, 1 ninja, 1 sniper, 1 grenadier), with a predetermined set of abilities and equipment, but you unlock new abilities/equip for your commandos with experience. For example, the sniper cannot move and fire in the same turn until you unlock the "fire on the move" ability for her, the commando gets a silencer for his gun...
So it IS similar to XCOM... the new ones, that is. :)

Edit: aaand, whishlisting doesn't work! I should have seen it coming...

Fever_Discordia: It's pure Tom Clancy though so expect much might-is-right, west-is-best type jingoism!
Ugh, I'll not be buying it right away then. Living in the United States I get enough of that bullshit outside of my gaming time.

I ignore all that shit, it makes living in the US somewhat bearable. However, depending on the results of the next presidential election, I might be moving out of this country and once and for all, it's just a huge shithole that's been getting worse for 20 years.

IAmSinistar: Like the art style more than that of Frozen Synapse. Sounds like a better story, too, more fleshed out. Definitely one to get at some point.

And that's different from most western developed video games how? {shrug}

The older I get, the more tempting it gets.

Probably just in the degree of stridency. I expect it's more explicit in this game, whereas other games prefer to go the implicit route. Truly progressive sentiments in combat-oriented games are a rare beast.
Totally forgot about this game.

Well, if you only keep the tactical combat but take away all the strategy and management part of XCOM, and add a branching investigation instead, sure ;)
For a second I had this confused with Shadow Company.
This looks more like a more stylized Deadline though, might be interesting although the reviews paint a non too flattering picture.

Well, yeah, expecting anything but a "might makes right" perspective in a combat oriented video game seems a little unrealistic. As far as patriotism of any sort goes, I'm rather disgusted by it, but it's a video game plot written for a western audience. It's what I would expect. Is this game any different than other GOG releases like Act of War or World in Conflict (I guess you get to play as the "bad" guys in that game, but I don't know if that makes it any better)? I haven't played those games, but from what I read it seems to be a similar concept...
