OVERpowered, OVERswarmed, OVERthrilled.

Raiden IV: Overkill, a frenetic vertical scrolling shooter, is available now DRM-free on GOG.com with a 30% launch discount.

In the days of yore when coin-ops ruled the Earth, top-down shoot-'em-ups were the best method of making humans deposit their hard-earned cash into the bellies of our rattling mechanical overlords. Coinops are nearly extinct now, but vertical scrolling shooters are here to stay, and Raiden IV: Overkill is the living, breathing, over-addictive proof! Clear screen after screen of swarming enemies with your formidably overpowered weaponry - leaving heaps of floating space debris in your wake. And be sure to gear up for the epic boss fights, because these oversized devils are going to take all the firepower and skill you can muster.

Collect weapons and power-ups, pump up your ship and try the all-new Overkill game mode, in which you'll earn points for eliminating enemies the moment they appear on screen. And all that with an impressive 3D coating that makes every bit of Raiden IV: Overkill look spiffier than ever.

Blow up scores of space-hoodlums and look cool doing it in Raiden IV: Overkill, now DRM-free on GOG.com. The launch discount will last until February 17, 1:59 PM GMT.

Note: Raiden IV: Overkill does not currently include Global Leaderboards and Replays, so the base price has been lowered to reflect this. The game's price will return to normal once these features are added. Owners of the game will not have to pay extra.
Cool addition! The price of this game is far less than the amount of quarters I stuffed into some of the earlier Raidens at the arcade.

barleyguy: In older versions of Raiden you can just replace the PNG files for the borders with an all-black image. Not sure if this works for this or not.

I seriously doubt though, that there's NO WAY to get rid of the borders.
There are no files that i can identify as being for borders in the directory, definitely nothing as easy as a swappable png. It's mostly comprised of Dll's and .mma files.
Has anyone tried running this game in WINE?

catpower1980: If you're afraid of difficulty, then you'll be happy to know that like Raiden 3, this 4th episode has multiple difficulty settings to adapt the game to your level ;)

Gnostic: I played Astrabreed on easy difficulty recently and am traumatized by it till I uninstall it. Will this easy be easier than Astrabreed?
Since you find the game difficult I'll go ahead and assume that you are a beginner shmup player.

Astebreed, while visually stunning and a fun game in its own way, is not a good example of the genre. It feels very convoluted, and therefore 1) it is tough to dodge things even if you are a hardcore shmupper (hence the replenishing lifebar), and 2) when you die it is not easy to understand where and what went wrong exactly. As a result you don't/can't improve much as you play more. I'll also say that it is VERY easy to survive (especially if you don't pay attention to scoring) for an experienced player, yet I still find it an extremely awkward and just gimmicky game. It is one of my least liked shmups (I have 39 installed on my PC, and hundreds more on various consoles)

Raiden 4 is not a *stellar* shmup, but it is a proper, well-made one. You will find it much harder than Astebreed at first, yet I promise you that with each run you will get better and beat the normal mode in no time. And you'll have fun doing it.

Or if you want not only a good but actually stellar game, go for Crimzon Clover first :)

I have.

WINE 1.9.3 Mint 17.3

The game appears to install vc 2012 and vc 2013 so you may want to use the appropriate winetricks. I didn't use any and the game ran fine but I figured it was worth mentioning.

Issues:

In terminal I receive a "INFO: Create directory failed! C" for whatever reason. The game has several resolution options but I was not able to make it go full screen. I was also getting some sound stuttering here and there while in the menu and in the game and no, this was not pcm_underrun related.

I haven't really tried tweaking it by changing WINE to Windows 7 mode or emulating a virtual desktop or even playing around with overrides. If you want controller support you should get the proper DLL and an Xpadder profile if you are using an XInput controller. That said, the game is quite playable but appears to need tweaks in order to enjoy it fully.

Definitely. Like Raiden 3, the difficulty is realy tweakable, you can max out your lives and bombs. You have a practice mode where enemies don't shoot at you. In very easy mode, you can destroy 3/4 of enemies bullets (that's what I played yesterday to just discover the levels and of course finished the game on my first try). There is also a light mode and original mode but the difference is not explained ("light" is hinted to be for beginners).

Narakir: They refused it ?!

ReynardFox: Yes, and possibly Deathsmiles and Darusburst too, because according to GOG they are "Too niche".
But they accepted Bombshell !
Hi,

Can anyone confirm whether or not the co-op feature is local only or can you direct connect.

Thanks

omega64: Wait really? Mushihimesame is too niche as a bullet hell but this is fine?
avatar
AnonAnom: Mushihimesama now has more than twice as many votes on the wishlist as Raiden IV, and also more than all the Raiden games together.
That's not any indication of how niche something is. Raiden definitely has more brand recognition to "normal people" than Mushihimesama does. Mushihimesama is really only known to hardcore shmup players, in particular people on the shmups forum.

And shmups ARE niche. 100%. I say that as a member of the niche.

I agree, I wouldn't say it's too niche to sell though. :P

Stop saying that on gog, you idiot!
