OVERpowered, OVERswarmed, OVERthrilled.

Raiden IV: Overkill, a frenetic vertical scrolling shooter, is available now DRM-free on GOG.com with a 30% launch discount.

In the days of yore when coin-ops ruled the Earth, top-down shoot-'em-ups were the best method of making humans deposit their hard-earned cash into the bellies of our rattling mechanical overlords. Coinops are nearly extinct now, but vertical scrolling shooters are here to stay, and Raiden IV: Overkill is the living, breathing, over-addictive proof! Clear screen after screen of swarming enemies with your formidably overpowered weaponry - leaving heaps of floating space debris in your wake. And be sure to gear up for the epic boss fights, because these oversized devils are going to take all the firepower and skill you can muster.

Collect weapons and power-ups, pump up your ship and try the all-new Overkill game mode, in which you'll earn points for eliminating enemies the moment they appear on screen. And all that with an impressive 3D coating that makes every bit of Raiden IV: Overkill look spiffier than ever.

Blow up scores of space-hoodlums and look cool doing it in Raiden IV: Overkill, now DRM-free on GOG.com. The launch discount will last until February 17, 1:59 PM GMT.

Note: Raiden IV: Overkill does not currently include Global Leaderboards and Replays, so the base price has been lowered to reflect this. The game's price will return to normal once these features are added. Owners of the game will not have to pay extra.
nice now publish the original japanese pc ports of raiden 1 and 2!

Tarm: What is NG+ and what is a strange fairy doing in a space shmup?
You can actually play as her :)

TheCoop: I'm wondering if the GOG version of this game has the same music looping problem that the Steam version does. From Stage 2 on, right where the music is supposed to loop, there's either a pause for a half second, or it cuts in too early and cuts off the music. The game was patched on Steam, but that patch didn't fix anything, and I think made the looping problem worse in ways.

So, is the problem on the GOG version too?
Well...I just tried the game out in solo mode, got past stage 2 (and realized that SHMUPs may not be my genre >.>), and I didn't hear any obvious stuttering and the music played constantly.

I am not sure if this answers your question as I am not sure as to prevalent this stuttering issue actually is :)

Here's where you can select the fairy as a "ship" :)

Not even thinking about answering that question :P

ReynardFox: 3. There's no way to disable the graphical borders, while this doesn't matter to everyone it annoys the shit out of me. I find every one of the included 'themes' visually obtrusive.
avatar
phaolo: Thanks and I agree, I hate those too!
In older versions of Raiden you can just replace the PNG files for the borders with an all-black image. Not sure if this works for this or not.

I seriously doubt though, that there's NO WAY to get rid of the borders.

Probably a wise decision. ;)

JudasIscariot: Do you have a video or something where I can see this bug in action? I'd like to check on this, if you don't mind :)
Here you go...

The first, third and fourth instances are pretty clear. The second one's more subtle, but it's there. Here's the problem though. With version 1.0 on Steam, the looping bug appeared to happen the same way every time. This allowed a user to make this fix that adjusted the loop timing so it would play correctly...

http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=54315&hilit=Raiden+IV&start=70

When the Steam version got patched to version 1.1, the user fix became broken, and the music looping problem became random. One time it would do it, the next time it wouldn't. One time it would have a pause, the next time it would cut in too soon. I have no idea what the folks behind the port did, but it wasn't fix the issue. That's why I'm asking here, in hopes of finding out.

For anyone interested, there's a new video I made with the sound effects turned off (ignore the 20 seconds of emptiness at the end). The music loop problem is clearly there. Hopefully someone at GOG can get ahold of the developers so they can fix this. Keep in mind, this looping problem is random. Sometimes stage 2 is fine, sometimes there's a pause, and other times it cuts in too early. It makes me wonder what happened, and why the developers thought they fixed it back on Steam before bringing it to GOG.

And yes, this video is of the GOG version.

Waitaminit! GOG is publishing Japanese Dating Sims but turning down CAVE games, the gold standard of shmups, because they're too niche?

Are you people insane?

P1na: still traumatized by the shmup section of evoland 2. If I can't handle that, I better stay clear of this one.

catpower1980: If you're afraid of difficulty, then you'll be happy to know that like Raiden 3, this 4th episode has multiple difficulty settings to adapt the game to your level ;)
I played Astrabreed on easy difficulty recently and am traumatized by it till I uninstall it. Will this easy be easier than Astrabreed?

Visual novels are pretty much mainstream now, when even American knockoffs of them are somewhat successful.

Well... some of us paid a real coins for credits... in Raiden 1 ...

You have no idea, what is torture and frustration.. no idea...
Also it makes me wonder, whether I'm victim of Stockholm syndrome???

Anyway, I must buy this one, just to check where that damn cockpit is ...
