OVERpowered, OVERswarmed, OVERthrilled.

Raiden IV: Overkill, a frenetic vertical scrolling shooter, is available now DRM-free on GOG.com with a 30% launch discount.

In the days of yore when coin-ops ruled the Earth, top-down shoot-'em-ups were the best method of making humans deposit their hard-earned cash into the bellies of our rattling mechanical overlords. Coinops are nearly extinct now, but vertical scrolling shooters are here to stay, and Raiden IV: Overkill is the living, breathing, over-addictive proof! Clear screen after screen of swarming enemies with your formidably overpowered weaponry - leaving heaps of floating space debris in your wake. And be sure to gear up for the epic boss fights, because these oversized devils are going to take all the firepower and skill you can muster.

Collect weapons and power-ups, pump up your ship and try the all-new Overkill game mode, in which you'll earn points for eliminating enemies the moment they appear on screen. And all that with an impressive 3D coating that makes every bit of Raiden IV: Overkill look spiffier than ever.

Blow up scores of space-hoodlums and look cool doing it in Raiden IV: Overkill, now DRM-free on GOG.com. The launch discount will last until February 17, 1:59 PM GMT.

Note: Raiden IV: Overkill does not currently include Global Leaderboards and Replays, so the base price has been lowered to reflect this. The game's price will return to normal once these features are added. Owners of the game will not have to pay extra.
Well it's about bloody time too.

Those borders though, can someone tell me if you can disable those obnoxiously busy borders and have nothing but the game screen? Without resorting to TATE that is.

As far as I am concerned the genre peaked with Galaxian.

Has anyone seen my onion belt?
Very nice to finally see another shmup here for the fans. However, reviews for the Raiden games haven't been all that great (ie, poor ports).

Instabought to support more SHMUPs on GOG. Bring em on. It's not too late to change your minds on Mushihimesama! Loving that included FLAC soundtrack too.

I haven't got it yet but this one's supposed to be a significantly better port than the other Raiden games. However I can say that it's a far better game than Raiden 3.

P1na: still traumatized by the shmup section of evoland 2. If I can't handle that, I better stay clear of this one.
Hah hah... I thought that one wasn't so bad. That MegaMan section was a pain, though. ( At least I think it was based on MegaMan/ RockMan. )

They refused it ?!

Yes, and possibly Deathsmiles and Darusburst too, because according to GOG they are "Too niche".

OK I've stopped work to play the game so here are the options:

* you can rotate the game screen every 90° (thus: 0°-90°-180°-270°)
* you can adjust the "in-game" screen (zoom in/out and translate)
* the borders can be set to different hues to be less "flashy"under the "theme" option

See fresh homemade picture attached for example

If you're afraid of difficulty, then you'll be happy to know that like Raiden 3, this 4th episode has multiple difficulty settings to adapt the game to your level ;)

Thanks for the info, I'm assuming you can't actually turn the borders off entirely?

Worst decision ever, gog!

I assume the peeps who are buying the Raiden series, are also going to buy Mushihime, Deathsmiles, Dodonpachi, etc. in a heartbeat.

I know i would :p

As the game isn't really in 16/9 format originally (or rather in 9/16 format if you rotate your screen) it will always have borders on the sides or up&bottom. See pic attached when rotated at 90°

I don't get the reasoning either; shmup are niche yes, so if they weren't selling any shmup I could understand the reasoning.

But here GoG is selling shmup so refusing Cave classics doesn't make any sense. It's like if they were selling adventure games but refusing to sell Lucasarts and Sierra ones because they were "too niche".

Sorry I didn't make myself clear, I'm wondering if the border art can be turned off, not stretching the game window to fit, but to replace the colourful border graphics with nothing but blackness.

I'm still going to buy it to show support, but as a bit of a purist, I really hate how devs feel the need to force cluttered non-game graphics around a non widescreen image.

Also, by refusing them, especially games of Cave's caliber, they make sure people won't be looking to buy the genre from GOG in general. Self fulfilling prophecies and all that.
