Are you Strogg enough to survive?

Quake IV is now available, DRM-free on GOG.com, with a 75% launch discount.
The fourth chapter in the legendary FPS series takes the fight to planet Stroggos, home of galaxy's ugliest cybernetic meanies. When things go sideways you must rely on your big guns, armored vehicles, and fellow marines to survive this desperate mission but nerves of steel might help, too.

Feeling nostalgic or just awfully trigger-happy? Check out our Bethesda shooters sale.
The 75% discount will last until August 28, 1 PM UTC.

Paradoks: Well... I loved Quake 2 but I think Quake 4 is average at best.

opslo: I like Quake 4 more than 2, to be honest.
For me it was a huge step back. My main dislike is a very linear level design, opposed to hub system from Quake 2. My other complaints include "modern" elements like turret sections and squad based sections, a bad example of silent protagonist (one that remains silent in situations when you really expect him to say something) and "epic" soundtrack (the only track that sounds similar to Quake 2 is menu theme). At least it was less disappointing than Doom 3.

Lifthrasil: Of course not available in Germany. Stupid German storefront!

Harzzach: 1. Install a VPN plugin like Zenmate and select for example USA.
2. Open a private browser window.
3. Open GOG.com and login.
4. Buy Quake 4 with Paypal or credt card.
5. Rejoice as german customer :)
I know how to use VPNs and I also travel frequently enough that I can get the indexed games sooner or later. But it's a shame that this has become necessary for GOG customers, just because GOG wants to advertise in German. It wasn't necessary before the German storefront (and German forum etc.) was introduced. That's why I, as a German, don't like the existence of the German storefront of GOG at all.

AlienMind: Gog should introduce age verification.
Yes, definitely! There's the so-called PostIDENT-Verfahren, they'd better check it out!

@GOG: You know what this link is??

A gameplay video of Quake 4, fully translated and dubbed to spanish. Just like it got released here in Spain.

Once more you seem unable to deliver.

Berzerk2002: Search for "Traducción al Español - Quake 4" and you'll find a guide on Steam.
I know that. But that's entirely NOT THE POINT.

Yes, it is. But i stopped complaining about things i cannot change. There are ways around those stupid laws, so i use them.

hollunder: As it stands I can't use the GOG version of Quake 4 because GOG does not provide a CD key, which is required by the Linux version.
Well, there's a quake4key file in the q4base directory. Are you saying that's kind of generic and not usable?

I'm with both of you. I don't like the German storefront either and thus I use GOG in English. But also, I am glad for information about workarounds for the regional blocking.

Guter: Well, there's a quake4key file in the q4base directory. Are you saying that's kind of generic and not usable?
Yes, sadly it does not help.
There's no key in there after install. Something gets written when you start a game (through wine in my case). That however does not seem to be the key in plain text. It is not alphanumeric but contains a bunch of special characters, including the tilde (~) that I can't type into the key entry field.

Copying that file to the Linux game directory does not help, the game still asks for the key.

So either GOG provides us with keys or we'll have to resort to illegal methods to get a legally purchased game working.
Maybe offtopic but release of Quake-4 ignited hope to see Enemy Territory: Quake Wars again.
Rights on that belong to zenimax/bethesda.

That's probably problematic because ETQW is mostly multiplayer. DRM free and MP don't seem to mix well as far as Bethesda games are concerned.

Last update - 1.5 removed DRM, by the way.
Well, color me really but pleasantly surprised this game has nearly 2,300 votes on the wishlist! I honestly didn't think it had more than a couple hundred.

I never found it all that interesting tbh, maybe because all my nostalgia goes to Doom 3. I played a little but found it boring.

mike_cesara: Great to have the game here. Would be even greater if we could get a cd-key to make the game work properly under Linux : )

Quake IV runs absolutely fine on Debian, needs a cd-key though..
link to idsoftware ftp mirror
So in the opposite to Quake 1 and 2 there's no way to use the GOG version to play Quake 4 native on Linux?
What a pity! I just was about to buy it...

Not available in Germany, this shop is a joke - a bad joke. :(

Good to know I have the original game here. But it seems,
GOG wouldn´t earn my money for a DRM free backup version.

Well, I have played Quake IV long time ago and for some reason I bought German version which was heavily censored for one reason or another, so I suppose that gog has uncensored version which is not legally available in Germany?! Too much gore for German authorities?
