This Summer Sale on GOG.COM starts with a journey into outer space. In Prey, a climatic sci-fi FPS game, our hero awakes aboard Talos I, a space station orbiting the moon in the year 2032. It appears that he was the key subject of an experiment meant to alter humanity forever - but at some point, things have gone wrong. The space station is now being overrun by hostile aliens and now your goal can be only one - survival.

Until the end of Summer Sale - on 15th June, 1 PM UTC - Prey is available on GOG.COM with a special 70% discount.

saldite: Everyone else has already said this, but this is a fantastic game. I skipped over it since I didn't really care about the OG Prey and I thought this was just a generic Sci-Fi shooter until I took a closer look. It's a genuine gem of a game and I can't recommend it enough.
*Semi Spoilers*

Yeah, it seems generic on the first area, but once the wtfbbq stuff starts it becomes addicting and fun to play.

Bavarian: If I had to choose between Prey and Prey, I'd definitely go for Prey.

Also, I think it's utterly stupid to name a game exactly the same as an already existing one.
Introducing, Tomb Raider! :D

And Doom!

And so on and so forth... :P

You forgot all the movies that do the same thing....heck, old monster movies practically thrived on such things(making remake after remake) in the early days of cinema.

MysterD: If we want to go there - sure, to get an account & pay for these games just to get these files in the first place to archive (so I can back them up on DVD, CD, BR, flash drive, another HDD, whatever) - I need a GOG account; need to buy the game; go onto web browser or Galaxy app; sign into my online GOG account and download the files from web browser or Galaxy app.

toxicTom: On GOG I can choose which browser (within limits... or else the site is broken), I can use LGogDownloader or gogrepo.py. I can even make my own downloader client with a bit of programming effort. I don't have to trust Galaxy.

Is there a way to get games downloaded from Steam without installing the official client?
Unfortunately, there is not. Nope.
You will need Steam game-client application to grab yours games for the first time, at least.

You can always back-up games folders (it's digital, they're your files) - but from there, it's up to you to do the homework, looks around online, test yourself, or whatever...to find out if a game over there has DRM. Thank God for wiki's, GOG threads, and whatnot on that stuff.

One of the differences b/t GOG and Steam - Galaxy's client is optional (you can still grab your games via a web browser), meanwhile the Steam client is required.

Epic Store works the same way as Steam, also - you need the client to get your games from there. From there, going to have to do the homework online or test it out yourself to find out what over there has what DRM.

Regardless, either way - Steam or GOG - you still have to sign into an account, buy the games, and download them online. All on you to back them up yourself.

EDIT:
I wish Epic, Origin, and Steam were often a bit more open if games have DRM or not. Especially on the "no DRM" part, as often that's not listed and not made public.

I do love that with GOG, you pretty much know that your Single-Player portions/campaigns are going to likely not have DRM-related issues, since games are DRM-FREE over there.

Prey is outstanding in so many ways. Those who are new to it are in for a treat.

Agreed...I got past the first area and am like OMGWTFBBQ....very nice.

I also like what I just found, a nod to the original Prey:

*Small Spoilers*

In the Transstar museum/exhibit in the main lobby(1F) one can find a document/book talking about the plane from the original game....it is on a couch near one of the entrances.

*end spoilers*

I'm pretty sure that that's up to each publisher...

RoboPond: But if you want it on Steam then you can just redeem the CD Key from the CD release on Steam, and it will add it to your library.
I never knew this. Thank you.

I did this years ago... not that it's important to me - you could just make an ISO from your installation DVD, download the latest patch, result: offline DRM free installer.

Yes, I was aware of this (and also have the latest patch archived as well) but I thought that it could not hurt to have another safe copy that probably won't break any time soon since this game is so hard to get :)

MarkoH01: .... since this game is so hard to get :)
= Expensive second hand?
I guess things have changed since I last looked for second hand games. 10 years or so ago, only big boxed classics were expensive - anything old in a DVD box was sold for pennies.

It depends. Tbh I did not look into second hand DVDs of Prey 2006 so I cannot tell you if this is hard to get - just was guessing this might be the case. However there are some games that have become quite expensive even secon hand because of them being rare. The original Final Fantasy 7 disc version i.e. often is quite pricey for such an old game.

The used copies of Prey are more expensive than the CD keys for the game. They tend to sell for anywhere in the $10USD range or higher (depending on how you prefer the condition). A big issue with them, however, is people gouging the price because they know people will seek out copies with a box to try and get the CD key to redeem the game through Steam. The gamble there, aside from jacked up price, is relying on the seller not being pond scum and knowingly selling a copy at that price even though they know the key attached to it has long since been used.

Speaking of this, I have this in my collection...bought it back when the used copies were cheaper....good game, imo.

Doesn't sound that expensive to me. Try searching for an old (big box) LucasArts game for example. Also, usuallty, there's less difference between good and "bad" condition of games in a DVD box (compared to big box releases).
