Have you tried running the game with Wine? Specifically, I'm wondering about the GOG version because on Winehq in can only find information about the original unpatched CD version. :)

IronArcturus: Is there any planetary conquest in the game? Or is it just space battles only?
Some very nice planetary assault.

Break down orbital defences such as minefields, defence fighters and gun platforms.

Then the surface nuking starts Mwah ha ha

Pax Imperia sounds like a lot of fun! Does the multiplayer mode include LAN or just Direct IP?
Where's Barry aka Metroid dude when we need a huge-a-ton of links for wishlists (Barry, you rock), containing all of those unforgettable gems by Nordic games we would love to see on GOG? :P
How can a superb game like Pax Imperia simply be a passer by in thy majesty, oh great Nordic? :)

IronArcturus: We need a "WinBox" to go along with DOSBox! :P
On Linux and Mac there's Wine which is really similar and allows playing any game in a virtual desktop i.e. in windowed mode. :)
Old games often run a lot better on Wine than on modern Windows. Some games don't run at all, though. :)

I tried wine in the past but it was too unreliable on games. Earth 2160 was my last one. I use Windows itself for gaming now.

I get plenty of Linux exercise on my home server and in virtual machines.

Really? I remember that DRM was a huge problem with WIne but for me most DRM-free games work perfectly or almost perfectly.

When I used to run Ubuntu, I used Wine a little bit. But for some games it was difficult to configure. I wonder if the Linux Mint version of Wine runs any better. Does Mint have an alternative to "PulseAudio?"

Perhaps I just don't have enough patience.

I highly doubt it. As far as I know they are the same.

PlayOnLinux is a front-end for Wine that makes installing games a lot easier and if you're lucky automatic for your game.
It is always a good idea to look at Winehq. https://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=1783

If you see a platinum or gold rating for the game you would like to install the game may run even better on Wine than on modern Windows. You can also find installation instructions there.

Pax Imperia: Eminent Domain got a gold rating from one user but the other silver ratings suggest that it may be a bit difficult to install.

Multiplayer is TCP/IP, modem and IPX/SPX (wow Netware, it's that old)

I don't remember if it needs a master server for lobby/meetups. That wouldn't exist now of course.

This forum software is being really quirky :(
Wow, I played this so much when it came out. Thanks Gog for bringing this back to light.

I just did this at work on a PC with Ubuntu 14.04.

I grabbed the Wine version that you receive with

sudo apt-get install wine

so for me it was WINE 1.6.

I ran the setup program, got through some of the minor error messages, checked the WINE drive, started up the game in Wine and it seems to work :) All of this is unofficial and YMMV :) Keep in mind that our game is at 1.072 so maybe that had some influence :) Also, since the game is in 640 x 480 by default you will have a window with the game with no full screen I am afraid.
Interesting. It looks nice, but I'm always wary of 4x games that aren't turn-based. Hm.

rampancy: I remember that the game had an optional Viceroy system, much like in MoO3. The AI Viceroys were put in place to ease the burden of micromanagement on the player, with the result being that if you so desired, you could literally let the game play itself with little intervention on the part of the player.
That's good to know, but... are they any good? I know of quite a few games in which such automated system don't function all too well.

The ironic thing is that with WINE, you'll get the windowed mode you desire as it defaults to a window :)
