The Call of the NES.

Odallus: The Dark Call, an authentic, modern and polished throwback to the feel and ambiance of the NES, is available now DRM-free on GOG.com!

Odallus: The Dark Call is a terrifyingly authentic throwback to the metroidvanias of old on the NES. It's a game that not only draws inspiration from titles like Ghosts 'n Goblins, Demon's Crest and Castlevania, but could easily be mistaken for one of them. For fans of days past, this title should have it all. At its core, the game is designed to recreate the ambience and feel of all the old school classics - for example, the graphics adhere strictly to the 8-bit limitations of game development back in the day. Odallus: The Dark Call makes the limitations its own, and combined with open, modern day design and responsive controls - it gracefully straddles the line between extremely old-school and extremely playable.

Peek through a highly polished window into the glory days of metroidvanias in Odallus: The Dark Call, available now DRM-free on GOG.com! If you can handle it.
Holy crap! this one takes me back!

If these old, Atari 2600 era bones hadn't aged beyond the difficulty curve these games used to have, i would instantly buy it. Maybe on a discount.
Could be the next Shovel Knight...
...well, wishlisted for now as I´m waiting for the reviews!
This looks really interesting. Is it basically like Shovel Knight, except darker and more serious, and more closely based on classic Castlevania rather than MegaMan/RockMan?

Since some people complained about the graphics, I have to say, with all those pseudo-retro games we've seen in recent years, it's nice when a developer actually gets that 8-Bit look right. No fancy filters or other modern crap to make it look "better" -- just some nice, old fashioned limited palette pixel art. Maybe not everyone can appreciate it, but I have to say I really like the way this one looks.

My only concern is whether the game is long enough. If it takes only a few hours to complete the entire game, then I think I'd rather wait for a discount. Going to wait for some reviews...
Graphics look like EGA.
Animations look like ZX Spectrum.

Maybe the hip retro movement has maybe gone a bit too far.

seppelfred: Very cool release. I will buy in the next few weeks.

I hope we see a release of Evoland 2 here next month.
There's an Evoland 2? I really enjoyed the first one, aside from it being fairly short. A sequel based on the same concept, but with more content, could be awesome.

Dalthnock: Metroidvania was never a game, rather a genre that started with Castlevania: Symphony of the Night on the Playstation.

So quite, quite far from the NES days. Unless you're calling the game Metroid "Metroidvania".
There were technically a few NES games ( aside from Metroid ) which could be considered "Metroidvanias" even if no one used that term back then. Battle of Olympus, in example. And perhaps Zelda 2 or Castlevania 2: Simon's Quest.

The SNES and Mega Drive also had a few, long before Symphony of the Night on the first Playstation.

Symphony just took things to the next level, in terms of complexity, size and amount of content, but the basic concept was already there.
Anyone else get a very distinct Ninja Gaiden feel from watching the video?

Well, well, well. I see you're trying to outpedant me.

Let's see what I can come up with, then.

Metroidvania is a term made up of both Metroid & Castlevania. Since Symphony of the Night was the first Castlevania game to adopt a Metroid style, technically there were no Metroidvania games before this one.

There may have been games with a SIMILAR play style, but those would be Metroid clones, not Metroidvania. Because Castlevania hadn't gone Metroid yet, so there was no such thing.

Beat that.

Cheers!
Looks like a Castlevania-clone.
Reminds me of Simon's Quest.

My point is, those games did in fact have "Metroidvania" style gameplay ( sidescrolling action with RPG elements, items/character upgrades and a more or less open world/ non-linear progression ). That the term didn't exist at the time doesn't change what those games were and are. Neener neener! :P

I'm also fairly sure the term "Metroidvania" wasn't broadly used immediately after games like SotN or Super Metroid were released, but rather, once clones of those popular games started to appear, and people needed a word to describe that kind of gameplay. For how long has that been a thing, anyway? I get the impression that the genre gained popularity only during the last 5, maybe 10 years.

Arguably it wasn't necessary to have so many different genre labels back in the day of the NES, since video games were still a fresh and relatively simple media. Nowadays we have crazy Indie dev teams creating new genres ( or at least genre mixtures ) on a daily basis.
Meh. I'll wait for a sale.

Nice release! The game looks absolutely amazing.
Wishlisted for now.

There's a sequel now? Evoland wasn't good, but it's nice that they're making one for people that liked it...I guess. =/
