To what is it most similar to, how does it compare to competitors?

It sure looks interesting. So, if I understand, it is a bit similar to games, where you don't directly interact in war, but rather equip the units and let them go, to do their job.

Like Majesty series, or maybe even the some months ago released Hero's Hour? Off course much more causal.

Anyway, I did just buy it, but right now cannot test it. Will probably in the following days.
