How can it be a classic when it was released today?

Classic is a reference to the style not the game itself

that's because what the statement says is that the game is copying the actually old city builders, not that the game itself is old.

Well, then all games can arguably be called classics, as they all are inspired by games from before, and it does not imply what the word "classic" means.

classic has three meanings:
1- High quality, exceptional example
2- A very typical example of it's genre / media / product
3- A recognisable value / cultural imprtance

So unless it is the "very typical" meaning. So a very typical builder game, but again it needs time to establish if it is or is not typical.

This is using the word wrong, in the same sense as Disney does

edit - in other words, looking old is not the same as classic. Retro would be a better word, or inspired by XYZ.

(edit 2 - it irks me when every single film made by Disney becoms a 'classic' on the blurbs.... a pet peeve of mine)

It's bad/lazy copywriting, which is on them or their marketing team. Seems like a pretty forgettable game, and that's probably why they were trying to use that language in the first place. There was a game that came out a couple of years ago that used the word "Remastered" in the title, even though it was a brand new release. But that game became immediately forgettable and I imagine that'll be the same situation with this one.

how much time do you need to establish whether this game takes after pharaoh, caesar etc.?

I think a great word that many seem to forget about is evocative.

Though supposing from what I saw featured, passé would be the word to look for. It looks exactly like C3, down to the big cities looking exactly identical due to a lack of visual variety.

See first edit above..

Yes, this games clearly takes after those games. And yes, Caesar / Pharaoh are classical games, this has been established. However, this game is not one yet. It may become one, though.

If this is how it works, you can make any kind of crap and call it a classic, just because you use a classic example as a blueprint.

yes, that's a very good word. And I do not see what is wrong with "similar to" or "inspired by"

no worries, friend, I already see what the problem is here

No it doesn't. You may need time to determine whether it is typical, but the game already is what it is. The word was used perfectly correctly for that 2nd definition.
Nice release! Mesopotamia deserves more games. I hope this one does it justice.

The monuments look wonderful.
