DDDespair: I've never had that problem. Just checked too and nailed all 3 positions first try. You only need to hold the lever up for about a second. RealMyst and RealMyst ME are harder to land due to the diagonals.
my name is supyreor catte: There's not a hope in hell that Cyan have fixed it, but it's possible that the ScummVM devs have essentially patched it when the game is run in ScummVM (which is what the current GOG version does). Back when I played it it was the original exe running natively.
Also, there are 4 positions, not 3. The nature of the bug doesn't make it impossible to get past it, it just makes what is supposed to be a puzzle with a repeatable solution into effectively rolling a die. It's entirely possible to get past that point without realising anything is wrong if you don't know how the controls are supposed to operate (FWIW I have the 1993 Win 3.1 version burned into my mind).
Here's another thread mentioning it:

I somewhat suspect that people who claim not to experience the bug just aren't aware that they're experiencing the bug. It used to be possible to step the rotation a quarter at a time and reliably get the "next" direction, including the fourth position that has no island.
I was referring to the East, North, and West, since you start at South. Yes, I hit West with no island. And no, it is not rolling a die. I just told you how to do it. There is no audio cue in Myst ME; you flip the left lever to allow moving, and flip the right to move. The only indication of movement is the gears turning. If you hold for about a second, then lower both, you will end up at the next island. This does not work in RealMyst and RealMyst ME because you can rotate to diagonals. In my testing, holding for 2 full seconds was too long and I would overshoot. It doesn't help that the added audio cue of the gears clanking isn't synced to it in any meaningful way (one clank doesn't indicate you've hit an island or a diagonal, and the sound tends to overlap with itself).
pferreira1983: I don't like the developers omitting the FMV cutscenes. Those CG rendered character models is something I'd expect from an indie adventure game in 2002. I hope they go back and add the FMV back in. At the moment it's Mystery of the Druids laughable.
I assume the reason is the FMV's are basically unusable for VR. And I doubt they'll go the extra mile to add an option to use them on PC.
