Dogmaus: I must say I'm surprised, it looks much better than I was expecting!
Can you quick save/load?
avatar
Cadaver747: No, you can't.
thank you, pass for me then. Just a repaint is not enough for me. You old-time Apogee fans, enjoy!
avatar
trusteft: Does it let you play with the old graphics too, or just the new ones? Just out of curiosity.
avatar
Cadaver747: No, it does not.
on the other hand, they haven't pay-walled the classic one behind the remaster, which is goes against the trend.

Emberheartgames: Yes!
That's really cool! :) Thanks for confirming
It's great news ... I am waiting for the 3rd Apogee HD title by Emberheart Games,
not only because I played the original games (and payed for several of those), but also
due to the fact that DOS box is no longer a good choice. The controls are really bad
compared to the original DOS experience - while the Unity powered HD titles are great.

Additionally the former look and feel is preserved while still looking good on 31.5" 4k screens
and perfectly support Logitech F310 gamepad under GNU/Linux (that's how I play those games).

For those who like a small overview about the three titles on GOG I added a new forum thread:
* https://www.gog.com/forum/monster_bash/apogee_hd_titles_technical_overview_gnulinux_centric

Currently, Monster Bash HD is available on GOG Offline installer in version 1.0.0.2 (51088) for Windows only,
but after short correspondence with the Dev the GNU/Linux version will be available very soon,
between 1 day and 1 week time.

Thus I directly bought it (even though I would not use Windows) ... and will be glad to play this old gem again.

Maybe Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure (03/1992) is the next HD game - which is my favorite Apogee game.
Instabought! So many memories with this one. Thank you, GOG and Apogee!
Does the GOG version have the level creator with it or is that more of a Steam thing?

The last picture in the store listing shows a level editor, so I would say that it is included.

Sounds like it is going by one of the reviews

i wasn't sure about it if it was included, Same thing happened before with Crystal Caves HD. So i ended up getting it for Steam with that one.

It's like the term "HD" is completely meaningless.

Don't get me wrong, it looks nice. But HD doesn't mean nice, it means high definition, which this is not.

maybe call it something more meaningless like
"frightmare edition"
or
"dream update"

reguardless, adding the moniker "HD" to something means it is an updated version from the original
nomenclanture aside, "HD" only refers to the screen resolution, not the contents displayed.

Doesn't need to be something meaningless, you could call it Monster Bash Remastered. The ability to scale low resolution art up to HD resolutions does not make the game HD.
By that definition everything I play in DOSbox and ScummVM is HD. In fact, by your definition anything displayed on a modern monitor is automatically HD. If I switch my desktop to 640x480 and let the monitor scale it up then it's still HD because it's the screen resolution that matters, not the contents displayed. Right?

To call a 2D game HD the artwork needs to be... high definition. Again, I have no issue with the choices they've made in this remaster, it's just the ridiculous name I take issue with.

I'm not complaining it's not HD (I think it's a very tastefully done remaster), I simply take issue with the claim that it's HD.

But look at the seamless upscaled pixel-graphics, widescreen support and the high number of colors and shades against the 4:3 CGA/EGA graphics.
Anyway, I hope other Apogee games also get a remastered/HD version in the future, like Raptor, Cosmos Cosmic Adventure...

I would regard HD as "highflying dreams" - in the best sense, of cause.

But to the point - high definition (HD) IS meaningless as it never was a technical term:
CGA is 320 x 200 video mode with four `colours': black, white, cyan, magenta;
EGA is 640 x 350 pixel with 16 colours out of 64;
VGA is 640 x 480 video mode with 16 colours out of 262144 - I hope one can get it;
XGA is 1024 x 768 video mode with 256 colours - or 640 x 480 in high colour, i.e. 16 bit
(those modes are named after real graphics adapters of IBM - the beginning of the PC era -
 introduced in 1981, 1984, 1987 {with PS/2} and 1990, respectively.

HD is a set of video modes: nHD {ninth HD} 640x360, qHD {quarter HD} 960x540, HD 1280x720,
HD+ 1600x900, FHD {full HD} 1920x1080, (W)QHD 2560x1440, QHD+ 3200x1800,
4k UHD 3840x2160, 5k UDH+ 5120x2880, 8k UHD 7680x4320.

So yes, HD is complete meaningless - even though non-technical people like to say HD and do mean FHD,
while HD was specified for 1280x720 (and used for it e.g. concerning video cams).
I think it is quite impressive when this is even noted ... without knowing the facts.
If one used 4k one would have an argument - but in this situation - it is Ok.
As given in the specification for Apogee HD: resolution 1280x800 or higher - so larger than HD ... cough!
So absolutely appropriate.

And as given before - it is appropriate for 4k on 31.5" screens. And I don't like the pixel madness
brand new games in 2020+ provide with 'pixel art' - and the HD titles can compete with those easily.
And 4k is the current standard - not FHD - which belongs to the past and only used by people needing > 100 Hz. ;)
With DP 2.0 around the corner we could hope for 8k and 16k soon.

So we should relax - and enjoy playing the Apogee HD titles by Emberheart Games!
Have fun! :)
