P1na: Damn, I was a backer and I don't remember the offer of a GOG key. Does anyone know if that's an option?
DF refused to give a GOG code to Broken Age backers for the longest of times, but now a GOG code is available in my HB page (not sure how long it's been there). I hope they'll not delay GOG codes for Massive Chalice for as long as they did for Broken Age, but you might have to wait for months.

Unsurprising, all of DF's newest releases are.

well, I'm certainly not buying it again.

lostwolfe: a massive snip follows:

that's totally ok. but with THREE MILLION DOLLARS! [say it in the doctor evil voice if you must] you can most certainly afford [and should get] an accountant and some form of financial officer to steer your ship.
avatar
JediEagle: Oh god, look, you and me could probably live off 3 million dollars till the end of our lives. But those 3 million went into backer rewards, documentary, people's salaries, taxes, utilities, rent etc. It's not cheap running a company.
DF has the reputation of making Bobby Kotick look like a reasonable individual.
Brütal Legend was originally a Vivendi game, but was dropped after Activision merged with Blizzard Entertainment.
This is a snippet of an interview with Edge:

"The guy(Tim) comes out and says I'm a prick," Kotick told the latest issue of Edge magazine.

"I've never met him in my life – I've never had anything to do with him. I never had any involvement in the Vivendi project that they were doing, Brütal Legend, other than I was in one meeting where the guys looked at it and said, 'He's late, he's missed every milestone, he's overspent the budget and it doesn't seem like a good game. We're going to cancel it.'

"And do you know what? That seemed like a sensible thing to do. And it turns out, he was late, he missed every milestone, the game was not a particularly good game..."

HiPhish: It's not so much Broken Age itself, rather the drama surrounding it. Double Fine got eight times the money they wanted, yet somehow managed to squander it all, announcing the fact just a few days after the Massive Chalice Kickstarter concluded (there is no way anyone would have pledged money to a company that goes over budget with 800% funding on a point & click adventure). They had to do scrape money together any way they could, just to release only half the game as Early Access. I have no idea how you could go over budget that hard with an adventure, unless you kept burning cash on on useless crap.

And then there was the whole Space Base 9 disaster, which really put the cherry on the cake for Double Fine.

lostwolfe: all of the above. thanks. i stepped away and only just got back. but you said pretty much everything i wanted to say.

for me, also, there was the added hilarity of not just going far past the amount they wanted for broken age, they almost literally concluded the broken age funding drive and went right into the massive chalice funding drive, basically sitting there with a begging bowl not quite a couple of months after they'd got /way/ more money than they'd ever needed for broken age.
Game development is massively expensive, and it's becoming obvious that most KS campaigns massively underestimate. Whether that's out of fear that a large goal will drive people away or bad business sense (people who are good at business tend to go into business and not CS) doesn't really matter.

Coming up with a complete game in 3 years, while also developing other games, says that DF is actually a pretty efficient and effective studio. i haven't heard of massive quality problems a la Bethesda either, which says that they've got a decent idea of how to do QA. I really don't know why people whine so much about DF.

Zoidberg: Regional price + double fine?

Ugh...

PaterAlf: Another crowdfunded Double Fine game that comes here with regionally pricing?

It seems that they don't want my money.

gamesfreak64: 1.40 difference to paying with euro

i saw the game so i search on youtube
as i expected its a weird '3d' perspective , with a weird view, requirng funny scrolling , movement, and the likes
so i will stay clear from this one.

if it had been 'flat' and a normal view then the game could have been on my account, but i saw 1 minute of video and my feet began to behave funny so i stay clear from it.

so it also seems they dont " want " my money aswell (or from people who have motionsickness like me).
Every game that looks and plays like this game are a big no no for me.
i' ll sit this one out forever :D
That's too bad. I love the look of Massive Chalice, but I've had problems like yours with some twitch-heavy action games.

VR sounds like it will make visual problems a lot worse. It's interesting, but everyone seems to be rushing into it before we really have a handle on how to mitigate the health problems.

Yeah, Tim called him a prick, because after dumping the game (which was a valid business decision) they sued DF for the IP, so they woudnt be able to finish the game. I'd call him a lot worse than that. And all the games they have made, I have enjoyed (except SBDF9, not only because they blew it, but also because I dont play such types of games).

Lodium: Yea Broen age was doublefines first kickstarter.
About the over funding thing
I dont think a lot of game companys know how manage money properly.
They are programmers, coders, artists and designers, not banking or finance people.
I coud see the argument though.
I mean , i think i read somewhere that Deponia first episode had a much lesser budget but was still a pretty decent adventure game.
I dont know how it did moneywise or how much it costed Daedalic Entertainment to make
but they are still around so i guess they didnt have to use all their savings to get it out the door.
Yeah, that was my thought as well. Most game makers are probably bad at managing a budget, especially if they're the eccentric artist type, the likes of Molyneux(sp?), with unrealistic visions for their game project.

A lot of money goes into physical backer rewards ( incl. shipping ), as well, which are arguably a bad idea to begin with.

I understand that some people are angry, if a developer ( such as DF ) failed to deliver what they promised, but I doubt they intentionally tried to scam people.
Wrong thread.

I remember asking about GOG during the Kickstarter, but the devs wouldn't confirm plans to submit the game to GOG. Their loss: I didn't pledge, and I'm not interested in supporting them now. Perhaps I'll consider buying at a deep discount in the future.

Maybe next time say "Yes, we will be submitting the game to GOG, and backers will get GOG keys if it's accepted."

You can always pledge to this Kickstarter that will get you GOG keys. :P
Game looks like it has some promise, and I love the Crusader Kings-style lineage mechanic... but that art style. Holy god. Those characters look like anemic Japanese fetish toons. And not particularly interesting ones at that. Think I'll pass unless they patch the game so the characters don't look like anorexic cabbage patch dolls.

Thanks! I'd been waiting for that one, but I might have missed the first-day deal if you hadn't mentioned the project. Backed. :)

Matruchus: Nice release. Definitely putting the game on my sales wishlist. Still not happy about what happened with Spacebase DF9,.
What happened with Spacebase DF9?
avatar
timppu: Not much interested in any Kickstarter drama, I guess that is why I don't participate in KS (broken promises, unrealistic expectations and all that).

If this game is any good, I'll probably buy it. Interesting though that I always thought Double Fine has some kind of good aura around them, but now I see merely bitching about them (due to KS I guess).
You probably haven´t backed Wasteland 2, Pillars of Eternity or Tesla Effect, have you? ;)
