You really are taking the piss at this point GOG...

20 years ago was 2001. The year Halo, THPS3, Advance Wars, Wario Land 4, Super Monkey Ball, Pikmen, Shenmue II, Ico, Golden Sun and more came out. Don't bullhonky about a lack of variety when The Sims, Roller Coaster Tycoon, Pokemon Crystal and more were kings of the realm.

They had some stuff, but not like today, at least not in North America (and my guess, probably not anywhere).

Indie gaming has really unlocked new possibilities. There is only so much "off the beaten path" in terms of risk that a larger studio can stomach.

I don't think a release like this one would have been possible in 2001. You needed significant financial backing just to distribute your game back then.

I'm sure some of it won't find much of an audience, but I think it's great they are taking risks and trying new things.

Looking at Steam, this game has 58 reviews total. On STEAM. Even generously assuming only 1% of purchasers end up reviewing this game, that's still under 6000 sales. Is this the mass market appeal we can expect from GOG?

There are only few exceptions to the rule. Maybe few widows who genuinely gave all they got while they were in relationship but lost their partner due to accident or some other reason NOT caused by themselves. But these are like magic unicorns spewing rainbows and sprincling fairydust wherever they go. On the other hand vast mayority of those "single" elderly are not single at all, they are divorced really. And the reason they are divorced, probably already multiple times, is because they are poison. They give you cancer, if not even nastier things. And the reason behind their unhappiness is not because they are "single" but because they have nack to make everyone lives absolutely miserable. Including themselves. Of course not all women are drama. I was refering to the lyrics of the song playing in the background of the game trailer. Grumpy sometimes but not bitter. I get along with myself and I'm happy that I'm not making anyone else miserable. Bitter are those people who are in their position unvoluntarily, wether that is single OR in unwanted/unhappy relationship. I, on the other hand, know exactly what I'm doing and I'm exactly where I want to.

why do games have to have mass appeal to be sold here?

there are plenty of games in the gog catalog that are NEVER going to have mass appeal outside of these particular four walls.

i'm talking about games like zork, which is a very old game by this point. i'm talking about games like the spiderweb games, which are GREAT games - for a handful of players. i'm talking about games like f-19 stealth fighter and other such VERY technical sims. all of these games are great...to somebody. but they're never going to be mainstream and that's fine.

i'm not absolutely in favour of gog's curation either, but good grief. gaming is more than just "mainstream titles with mass appeal" at this point.

Who's been responsible for the curation lately?

My mistake then - though I think we're all a bit bitter after a certain age unless we've been EXTREMELY lucky, but it becomes an undertone of our character we're not consciously aware of any more. If you've carved your own path in life and feel at peace with it, my honest respects. I would not expect everyone to walk the same road, that's all I'm saying.

It's not just about what gets accepted but also about what simultanously gets rejected/ignored and for what reason. Basically, it's hard to accept any mercantile factors as grounds for passing on a game when something like this gets a release.

Also, I'd love GOG to make things a bit easier for us if they are going to keep adding trash (in my opnion) like this to the catalogue. Better filters for searching the store, the option to hide/ignore games, bring back GOG-mixes to make looking for games we actually might be interested in easier.

having said that:

i also find it kind of sad that people are so frustrated that this game got released here. for the people who are looking for niche experiences, this should be a fine, quite niche experience.

and that's good, because there are already a LOT of "gamery game" niche experiences on gog that they don't seem to mind.

What a reasonable opinion. Curation is not perfect and it'd be interesting to see what criteria they used to determine the game. I'm sure if someone had the drive and willpower to data mine and play all the new releases, they could reverse-engineer rough guidelines for each specific genre. (I highly suspect novelty is a major deciding factor to make it stand out from the crowd.) The issue would be having to compile a list of all the rejected games since they're just as an important dataset to consider.

When GOG has rejected numerous, objectively high quality games (some that I personally really, really wanted) under the excuse of 'too niche' in the past, can you blame us for feeling slighted and getting salty when we now see GOG letting any old weird and questionable games on the store?

I wouldn't care what kind of whackado releases GOG would greenlight if they didn't already have a history of ignoring other games out of pure stupidity and ignorance.
