Dead Mountain.

<span class="bold">Kholat</span>, a game of survival and exploration, is available now for Windows, DRM-free on GOG.com with a launch 10% discount.

February 2, 1959. A group of hikers sets up camp on the eastmost side of Kholat Syakhl, Russia. A snowstorm rages.
February 3, 1959. There are no survivors. Nine bodies are strewn across the campsite and surrounding areas. Half-dressed, barefoot. Cuts in the tent indicate a frantic escape.
May 4, 1959. Authorities determine an "unknown, compelling force" to be the cause of the deaths.

Narrated by Sean Bean, <span class="bold">Kholat</span> takes place years after the infamous Dyatlov Pass incident, so named after the leader of the lost expedition. In it you'll traverse the treacherous forests of Dyatlov Pass on your search for the truth behind the mysterious tragedy. Explore an open world, relying on nothing more than a map, a compass and your instincts to survive the darkness that lurks beneath. If a real-life mystery and gameplay inspired by titles like Amnesia or Dear Esther aren't enough to pique your interest, then maybe "experimental horror game" will. In the words of the developers themselves, "<span class="bold">Kholat</span> is a game that doesn't follow mainstream game design rules but creates its own".

<span class="bold">Kholat</span> is available now, DRM-free on GOG.com! The 10% launch discount will last until June 22, 10:59 PM GMT.
Looks somewhat interesting, even though the trailer makes this out to be "Dear Esther II - The Hikening".

Cautiously wishlisted for now.

HereForTheBeer: Those screenshots are gorgeous.

CharlesGrey: Worst case, it's just a walking simulator with flashy graphics.
Well, it IS a walking simulator, the developers just tried to create the best one yet and get everything out of the genre. That's at least what I read in a preview several months ago. Personally I must say that it is the first one I'm remotely interested in since the crapfest that Dear Esther was (well, excluding jefequeso's games). The setting and the gorgeous presentation sure as hell got me interested.
Come on! Who wouldn't know Mr Bean?
I heard they were making a sequel where, instead of a human, you play a small, Chinese breed of dog, it's going to be called
'Chow Kholat'
Boom, boom!

No love for The Stanley Parable? It's Douglas Adams / Pythonesque and breaks the forth wall and... everything!

Exactly the reason why I posted it.
I'd never thought about it before. But that little video did drive it through.
I often thought this setting would make a good sci-fi/horror story but the one movie (I forgot the title) I saw using it wasn't that great. Wishlisted.

What about the Tunguska event next?

cogadh: Did someone already make the Sean Bean death joke? Yes? Okay, nevermind then.
LOL well played!

Also, developers, please, please, PLEASE have the "narrator" at the end be revealed to be one of the missing climbers! I'd love you forever if that were the case! Someone who solves the game can feel free to spoil that for me if it's true!
Man, I'm dying from all those Sean Bean jokes...

Story, setting and execution seems interesting enough to not be bring down by walking simulator. Onto my "I should check it after 10 year when I finally/maybe upgrade my PC to actually run modern games on it" list.

I haven't played it yet, maybe it's awesome, I don't know. What I've heard and seen certainly hasn't attracted me as much as Kholat, though.
It's really bad - it should be free added to unreal engine as a tech demo.

That movie was Devil's Pass. You're right, it wasn't as good as it could have been. I immediately thought of the same movie when I read the description of Kholat. Hopefully the game does a good job.

At a first glance I read that as "wanking simulator". :|

Eh... It's probably been done.

I thought Vanishing of Ethan Carter was quite nice, although it actually had a few puzzles and other gameplay elements, so maybe it's not a walking simulator, per se.

I've seen a few videos of it and it looked hilarious. Would love to see it here on GOG.

Jim Sterling made a First Impression video covering the game; overall he seemed rather positive about it, noting that it was rather effective at building its atmosphere. From what was shown in the video, it appears that the gameplay (beyond movement and looking) is minimalistic, but present.

There actually has been a game that used the Tunguska Event, albeit not a horror game: Secret Files: Tungska
