And the Universe star(e)s back at you

J.U.L.I.A. Among the Stars, a narrative-driven sci-fi adventure game about unlocking the mysteries of a foreign solar system, is now available DRM-free on GOG.com for Windows and Linux, with GOG Galaxy support for achievements and a 50% launch discount.

It is the most carefully-laid plans that usually go awry in the most catastrophic manner. Top astrobiologist Rachel Manners wakes up from a decades-long cryogenic sleep inside a massive space probe, fully equipped and meticulously designed to carry out a recon mission on a solar system similar to our own. The rest of the crew is gone, the space ship is heavily damaged, and Rachel has no idea where in the universe she is. But perhaps J.U.L.I.A., the ship's A.I., does.

Rachel sets out to explore six exotic planets, accompanied by the hulking MOBOT, a reconnaissance robot that was built specifically for this mission. She must solve dozens of puzzles, overcome the obstacles of the unfamiliar terrain, and gather clues, in order to learn the reasons behind the mission's apparent failure and her crew's demise. How come she is the only one who survived? Did the mysterious signal that got them here have anything to do with all this? And how long will she manage to put up with J.U.L.I.A.'s shenanigans?

Join a lonely astronaut, a huge robot, and a temperamental A.I. as they venture in J.U.L.I.A. Among the Stars, DRM-free on GOG.com. The 50% launch discount will last until April 13, 1:59 PM UTC.

deonast: How did I miss this during the Insomnia sale? Maybe it came up while my time was being wasted working.
avatar
IAmSinistar: Most of the advance release titles were infrequent it seemed, at least for what little time I participated. The one that showed up the most for me was Subterrain. I only saw Jotun go by once, and this one once or maybe twice. This is the only one I leapt on though.
Ah I did stumble across Jotum and grabbed that. Not sure if I realised it wasn't released yet or not. Half my buying was from PC and half from the phone while commuting to and from work.

The three games mentioned were "sort of released", in that you could get them through the sale but not through the site (unless you knew the hidden URL). It's only now that they are publicly available. That's what was behind my somewhat confusing remark earlier about "prepurchasing" this game - it's only now that it is officially available to all comers.

Most of my early purchasing from the sale was from my tablet while on vacation, and the rest on my PC when I got back. I spent very little time overall on the sale though. The change in how gifting is priced on GOG makes Insomnia less interesting now, since a big part of the fun was rallying together for watch shifts while others slept.

tburger: BUMP on board..

EDIT: The game looks VERY nice but I'm a bit suspicious about OS (modern, DX10) vs hardware (128MB VRAM 1 GB RAM) requirements...Is everything ok on a game card?
Yes, should be fine. It just a point and click game - aka one picture/ per room where you click and talk to your AI and solve puzzles, etc.

Eitherway, I'm very happy to see it here since the dev wasn't very interested in to going for gog about a year ago when emailed him. Glad to see he changed his mind.

Didn't realise that sort of community buying was occurring. Just assumed everyone was down on the sleep like I usually am. Though this last time not so much. Though I didn't get my commute sleep in that I tend to rely on.
I am so happy. Finally this game appeared in my wishlist. Yay!!!

Yes, in previous Insomnia there was a core group in the tracker thread who would take turns watching for games that other members wanted. It was part of the convivial atmosphere of the sale. With the new gifting pricing one more often has to be there personally for the purchase, which defeats this community effort.

On the plus side, the item turnover seemed much quicker in this sale, at least while I was on. I haven't heard any Jack Keane-esque horror stories so far.

game looks okay, imho it looks much more like HOG (Hidden Object Game)
which is not a bad thing, i own many hogs (games, not pigs) digital and also on physical (cd/dvd)(drm free ofcourse)

One bad thing is the annoying robot voice, the woman voice is okay, the robo voice is annoying, i have heard better ones, and less irritating ( yup i have sensitive eyes and ears(weird distorted sounds effect me aswell unfortunately)
i assume that the robot voice cant be turned of as it appears to be a major part of the game, while i have many games at 8 or 14 bucks that dont talk, so if all things are subtitled i guess i be turning of music and sound from my pc itself (aduiosettings).
well, i had store credits left, almost forgot, so i bought the game

I think all the dialogue is subtitled. There are two robot voices, one "male" and one "female", as well as Rachel's voice. I'm assuming it's Mobot (the male voice) that bothers you, not J.U.L.I.A.? There are a few points in the game that may require you to turn the sound back on, though.

No hidden object scenes in this game, although I see why you were making the comparison. However, the quality here is a step above even the best HOGs I've played.

Puzzle types: "pipe"-like puzzles, tile-swap (only one), codebreaking (several subtypes), sound frequency-based, navigation, several other kinds.

thanks for the reply.
yup, Mobot the robo companion is the one with the annoying voice, you see metallic sounds are annoying, distorting sounds aswell,( thats a robovoice which does not talk monotone like "by your command" (cylons(galactica classics)) but has high puched voices like the first speech engines in the c64.
A robot can have a human voice instead of a annoying voice (many movies have one).

The standard is higher indeed, the one thing that is a little less is the input and the dialog menu: these look like vector (adobe illustrator) in classic hogs theres usually a better text on a one color or paper like background, but thats just a small minor minus of the julia game.

I have downloaded it and i am gonna try it tomorrow .
Nice looks and nice genre but it seems to be a bit short, which is not a bad thing per se and the price is okay too. Will wait for a few more reviews regarding the quality of the story and the puzzles.

JudasIscariot: Writing to Support would be a bit more effective since the ratings are not something I can change myself :)
Oh I caught you saying before you could remove reviews and such. :P I guess you can only remove or edit text, not change rating.
high rated
Very nice! I backed this on Indiegogo, CBE Software run a great, and engaging campaign, and had a great time following its development before family health issues surfaced.

Wonder if we have any other backers on GOG. Would love to get it here, have to contact CBE Software to see if backers get GOG codes.

It's a great game. I managed to pick it up during the Insomnia sale and finished it a few days later. It took me 10 and half hours to complete, but I didn't get all the achievements. The story is good and interesting but what I liked the most were the puzzles and the interface. It's really slick and plays nice, and feels very modern to me, coming from someone who plays a lot of games in this genre. I hope y'all enjoy it!
