Watch out for that tree!

Jill of the Jungle: The Complete Trilogy is now available for FREE. To celebrate her arrival, the Jazz Jackrabbit Collections are 33% off and the Unreal series 80% off until November 5th, 11pm UTC.

Re-discover this cult platform series from Epic starring a spunky amazon lady who can morph into various animals in order to access unreachable areas and kick copious amounts of evil butt.

Magnitus: Honestly, the game is probably very so so by today's standards, but I'll probably get a couple of hours out of it for nostalgia's sake.

Awesome to see it here though, especially for those who were around and old enough to play it when it was a new hot thing.

Thanks to all parties responsible for making this release happen.
Pretty much, it's one of the games I downloaded back in the '90s when I first got online. That and Xargon, pretty fun though even if the graphics weren't very good 20 years ago.

Darvond: Yoink. This was a fine game.

MarkoH01: Thank you GOG. I never heard of them before but I just downloaded and played them a bit. Real oldschool fun :)
But why does it still say "This is Shareware"? I guess these are the full versions?
avatar
Darvond: Even Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure Episode 1 still says Shareware. It's just a standard label for many episode 1s.
It's not really a label, episode 1 was commonly shareware to get people into the game rather than having a second demo that they had to worry about. It was also nice because you could easily skip it if you wanted to.

Thanks. I used to play these games all of the time.
Niiice! I really enjoyed these games back in the day. And for free too! Thank you, Epic and GOG! :-D
Woo, a Good OLD Game released. Feels like it's been awhile. And free too? Thanks GoG!
I remember having the shareware version of this and Xargon.

timppu: Frankly, I felt it was a very mediocre, even shitty, already back in the day. Or at least the first Jill, I don't think I have played the sequels. It just felt quite amateurish, and kind of a prime example for people to claim platform jumping games are much better on 16-bit consoles and Amiga, than on PC.

It was not like Jazz the Jackrabbit or the later Commander Keen games which IMHO were genuinely good and interesting platform jumping games (Jazz more for its technical prowess, and Keen games for just being fun to play).

Either way, I still think it is a fantastic move from GOG to release them as freebies on GOG. When I saw the thread, I was first like "Hmmm, how much would I be willing to pay for them...", but now I don't have to wonder. :) Free is free. So yeah, thanks GOG and Epic.
For me, it was around that time that I transitioned from consoles to PCs (my last consoles were an SNES/Sega Genesis duo, once I got a PC, I never got another console).

For sure, games like Megaman and Castlevania had better overall production than your typical PC platformer, but to my sensibilities at least, PC games still had a more mature richer groundbreaking feel than console games (Master of Orion, Syndicate, Ultima Underworld, Privateer, Doom, X-Com, Warcraft, etc) and some of that feel rubbed off even for PC games that delved into realms where consoles were leagues ahead.

Maybe it is because PC games had less production value and thus were more willing to take risks (ie, the Indie factor). Maybe it's a cultural thing (console games were typically from Asia and PC games were typically from North America and Europe). Maybe PC games were just blessed with some creative geniuses (a lot of the hits did seem to be coming from relatively few gaming studios).

I can't quite put a finger on it, but it was a gaming revelation for me at the time, kind of like Indie games now.

Yeah, lots of great PC games came out in the 90s. It was awesome.

Is it free because it's freeware or what ever they call certain games?
This is an Epic gift! Thank you GOG!

I noticed there isn't a subforum for the game: I suppose this is a mistake because Jill surely deserves her own.

It is free because Epic decided to give it away for free on GOG (don't know it it is legally available anywhere else). Technically it is not freeware. Freeware is normally called software that was meant to be free in the first place - sometimes the devs/publisher decide to turn their game into freeware and announce it officially. So far I could not find anything about Epic officially declaring the games to be freeware.

I didn't say that, you quoted wrong.

Anyway, yeah, IMHO this is a prime example of rose-tinted glasses just because something is old. Not everything made "back then" is good, or was even good back then. IMHO this is one of those cases. Even back in early 90s, the graphics of the first Jill game were basic, the gameplay was basic, the music was basic, etc. It felt more like someone's hobby project. If people want to see what good PC platformers were about in the early 90s, rather check the Jazz game(s) and the later Commander Keen games.

But yeah, for free, why not.

Considering Jazz Jackrabbit came out on GOG last November and this game came out (for free!) yesterday, I very much look forward to buying Commander Keen here. I remember hours of playing the game while at my grandmother's, in her study... any hints you guys can drop?

(And another thanks from me).
This game was part of my childhood :') glad it is available here!
[insert Jill's "YEAHH" sound here]

Oh yup, sorry I meant to quote who you quoted.

I should have said in my initial post, "Okay, this is Epic Games" for any meme fans on here because Ben Shapiro hosted PewDiePie's Bonus Meme Review.
