The one console to rule them all…

Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth1, the satirical JRPG series finally takes on Windows computers everywhere, available now, DRM-free on GOG.com with a 50% launch discount.

Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth1 takes place in the land of Gamindustry, it's a story of four goddesses also known as Console Patron Units, or CPUs, locked in a thousand year struggle, called the Console War, in which they fight each other for shares. Yup.
If that wasn't blunt enough - the Hyperdimension Neptunia series is a spoofy JRPG take on the gaming industry. The world, the characters, everything here is a little nod, a gamer-friendly meme, or just unabashed satire. But don't be mistaken, the game is far from a one-trick pony - there is plenty here for fans of the genre. Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth1 brings a novel fighting system which combines free movement with classic turn-based RPG combat, as well as many other huge improvements in mechanics and presentation over the game originally released on the PSP.

You can also pick up the Additional Content1 DLC pack featuring a much higher level cap, new quests, battles and Plans.

Is the Console War worth fighting? Find out with Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth1, DRM-free now on GOG.com! The launch discount will end on November 10, 1:59 PM GMT.
I like JRPGs and I like things like Legend of Heroes that was released a few days ago.
I have never heart of this one and the video and pictures tell me nothing about gameplay.

- Is this a classical RPG (like LoH)? The pictures look like a mix of playboy magazine and tron (the movie where a person gets sucked into cyberspace).

- Is it part of a series? Do you need some background knowledge to understand anything about the characters and the story?

- My favourite JRPGs are Crono Trigger, Legend of Heroes (thanks gog, never heart of this before it was released here too), Xenogears/Xenosaga and Final Fantasy 7,8,10. Is this something similar?

Can't really answer 1 and 3, but I can say for certain that no other knowledge is necessary when it comes to understanding the plot and characters. This is an introductory game so there's nothing you are supposed to know before you dive in.

Well, all you need to know is that the goddesses are anthropomorphized classic game consoles from sega, sony, nintendo and microsoft /which are the nations in the game).

Pretty much. There are some extras like moving and attack AoEs and combos, but at its core it's very much classic turn-based fare.

It is part of a series, but as it's a vastly improved remake of the first one you don't really need background info. Knowledge of video game history is strongly recommended, though, or you'll miss half the jokes.

Well...sorta. Out of those, the closest would probably be the early parts of LoH, before it gets all serious. It is way more focused on humor than on plot, though. If you expect a deep, epic story, look elsewhere. But I had a blast with it; something goofy and cheerful makes for a nice change of pace once in a while.

tfishell: Activision is now "meh" towards their backlog. :P
I know, right?

You'd think that after dropping $6 billion on a mobile game company, they'd be a little more receptive to earning some extra cash by releasing Sierra classic games for resale

AFTER ALL THIS TIME IT CAME WOOOOHOOOOOO!!

They'll earn about 0.0000001% of that here but I tweeted that idea to Activision support anyway. ;)
Waited for this for about ... eight months? Had to pirate this game before. :p

Hrmm....

But what if they released ALL Sierra classic games here?

Would that bump the total to 0.000001% of that money they spent?

Sounds like a deal to me! :) Activision, get on it!

Now you have a reason to get it and support the game now :D and the horrible part is we need to wait a while if anything for 2 and 3

Yeah, now I had to buy it, of course.

One question though: are the DLCs included? They are not mentioned in the store page...

Edit: those are here.

Yes, the Console Wars DRM-fr- oh wait, that isn't the typical Final Fantasy game that I find myself playing.

Still, GOG is picking up the pace. I like it.

Nope sold separately, under the optional content tab:

it is a separate purchase of 2.99 which is not bad at the end of the day I picked it up and was 17.98 after tax for me with game+ dlc pack
Well, the German news page didn't mention the DLC pack, that's why I asked.
