IronArcturus: If you get Cataclysm, try to scuttle the main ship! The commander will get mad at you! :P

tinyE: Well i just checked Amazon. They want $20 for a used copy listed as "Okay". :P
Try ebay, no new ones available, as I said I paid $5.50, but yes some sites try to gouge you.
One I found
I got mine from this Homeworld Cataclysm ebay store and it's still listed as in stock they are described as used but good condition, mine was mint and looked unused, but as It's the only one I've bought, I could have just got lucky.

With missing source code, I don't think gearbox will simply release old version, not sure if they can legally provide original as a copy, but it's a risk.
I own remastered here and steam, and I'm seriously thiunking only way to get true original versions, is get the discs.
Missing LAN is an issue, on it's own.
Even if this update gives HW1 the fixes it needs, still like a unaltered classic
I've got the source code for HW1, anyway work in 6 hours time for some sleep.

rampancy: In fact, I'd wager I'm probably the only person who'd be doing that...
You would lose that bet. Looks like my GPU should just be able to run the remaster, but Homeworld classic will be the one I will play.

Promo for another 60 hours, good.

tinyE: Separate folders but one install, and as I mentioned earlier, one menu with options to play any of the four.

You can go into each folder and create separate icons for each but I really don't see the point.
Not much of a point on four icons, true, but a lot of points on separate installers. The fact that they are all in one is rather unfortunate IMO. I can't picture myself needing to play all four at the same time, anyway.
Release price and discount is insulting to those of us that remember what this product originally cost and how poorly it was supported after release.

But do continue trying to convince all of us that you need us to buy this game at an inflated price again. I'm sure it'll work.

Also, with my bandwidth it's going to take me about 4 days to dl the 7GB of installer files

the gog price ATM is the same price & same discount as Steam's for the base set & the soundtrack sold on Steam is twice the price as each game's are sold individually over there & with gog's they are bundled for the same price.

tritone: Your reply "implies" you're doing this on XP... is that true? Does anyone know if this bundle can play the CLASSIC versions on XP? Thx.
avatar
UhuruNUru: Minimum system requirements - Windows: OS: Windows Vista
Processor: 2.2GHz Dual Core Processor
Memory: 1 GB RAM
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS (512MB) / ATI Radeon HD4800 (512MB)
Storage: 20 GB available space

OS listed here is what GOG/Gearbox provide support for if you have issues. This is due to the dropping of XP support from MS, not because XP is obsolete for games that were made for it, or even earlier OS.

The crucial factor is if you have a dual core CPU, and that's for remastered.
Anything later than a Pentium 4, so core 2 onwards, I got a Pentium 4 640 in 2005, a few months later, dual core dropped and AAA switched leaving me up the creek, with one core, and no paddles.

Classic was made for single core so should be fine. If GOG's "Compatibility", for modern OS's gives you no problems, neither should these. Hell just rip out the GOG files and try that, on a game you already have, might even be easier to get working on older rigs/OS's, they don't need the modern compatibilty fixes.

Gearbox site says this about classic
As a free bonus, this collection also includes original, non-remastered versions of Homeworld Classic and Homeworld 2 Classic, preserving the purest form of the original releases with compatibility for modern operating systems.

PC Gaming Wiki is a good source of fixes for games, and just seen this

Hope that helps, basically if the game was made for the CPU and or GPU you have, it works, as well today as it did then, the only really game breaking change was the switch from single core to multi, which in practise means 2 or more cores.

{Edit: to be clear, my Pentium 4 was 64-bit using hyperthreading, when I say 2 cores, I mean physical ones, not hyperthreaded ones.}

Have fun, but seriously Windows 7 is much better than XP, if your PC, can't run it, you can only play older games anyway, did that from 2005 to 2011, it sucked then, at least you have GOG to get old games from.
My source was less reputable, but was only online option, in those days.
Hey, thanks for the in-depth reply! I have 3 Win 7 machines, in addition to the XP box, but XP is my "everday gaming rig" because I play a lot of older games (not just GOG games). I would primarily be interested in this bundle if I could quickly fire-up the original Homeworld without switching to the W7 box to do it. Maybe someone on GOG with XP will give this a try and let us know? Thanks!
I was kind of hoping to see this on GOG connect... :)

Gydion: Aspyr?
then why steam have it? is GOG the only one who doesn't have a deal with Asypr?
Still can barely believe that GOG got Gearbox. Bravo. I'd instabuy if I didn't already have them.
Pretty much GOG is the only place you won't find aspyr games. If you look at GOG s catalog any games that have mac versions done by aspyr arent here.

It is what it is.
hopefully GOG will get a contract with them sooner rather than later
Ohh, now this release is interesting on a lot of levels. I got the Steam version a while back as part of a thing...HW2 is as glorious as it ever was, now with prettier graphics, but HW1 Remastered is built on the HW2 mechanics so it plays more like a TC mod of HW2 than the game we all know and love. Multiplayer is, or at least was around the time of launch, a real mess.
avatar
Niggles: Fantastic news. Instabuy (for the old versions).
However as a cynic ---- >> i am wondering whether the new version has not sold as well as Gearbox had hoped?. Anyone kept one eye on the new one when it was released etc?.
The classic versions were always included, since the start, fixed to work under modern OSes without any hassle. Gearbox realized that a lot of people will want to play the unaltered versions and so they delivered.

That said, Homeworld Remastered is not your usual "slap a new engine there and get on with it", a lot of love and care went into creating those versions. And with the update fixing formations and ballistics model, I can't even imagine playing the original anymore.

NovusBogus: HW1 Remastered is built on the HW2 mechanics so it plays more like a TC mod of HW2 than the game we all know and love.
They actually fixed that with the 2.0 patch. Specifically, the issues with HW1 were that ships did not adhere to formations properly and projectile trajectories were not simulated - both were painstakingly coded into the HW2 engine and added for the original in order to address issues HW1 fans had with the remaster.

Can anyone confirm that the originals are available as a separate download? I am a bit confused as to what "having free access to these games" could mean

No, they are not. All the 4 games (1+2 Remastered, 1+2 Classic) are available in one installer and can be run through a single launcher.
