Dear Community,

Thank you for your patience and for giving us the time to investigate the release of HITMAN GOTY on GOG. As promised, we’re getting back to you with updates.

We're still in dialogue with IO Interactive about this release. Today we have removed HITMAN GOTY from GOG’s catalog – we shouldn’t have released it in its current form, as you’ve pointed out.

We’d like to apologise for the confusion and anger generated by this situation. We’ve let you down and we’d like to thank you for bringing this topic to us – while it was honest to the bone, it shows how passionate you are towards GOG.

We appreciate your feedback and will continue our efforts to improve our communication with you.

lubwak: Don't behave like a spoiled child. What is the alternative? Steam, Epic? We DO want the pressure to work, because we DO want GOG to function and work and remain a DRM-free store. If they make mistakes, but then fix them and hopefully learn for the future, it's all fine with me.
I think that in general CD Projekt has suffered from bad managerial decisions as opposed to the earlier efforts and I think it is the head of the fish that is getting stinky. They probably need some managerial changes if they do not want to totally fail and go bankrupt. Somebody out there is no particularly competent - that is what it is.
Some people only want to bitch about things.

PERSONALLY, I like the fact that they took action, even if it took a couple weeks (and probably some legal consultation). They admitted that they let us down and are trying to fix it. Obviously, it would be better if they didn't mess up, but they're only men of flesh and blood. That they're trying to fix it, and admitted openly that they've let us down, is the only thing reasonable people can ask.

You're also right about the lack of managerial competence here of late. There is hope, though, as with other problems they never spoke or took action. Perhaps there's been some late spring cleaning at the CDProjekt Blue offices.

The most likely result of this kerfluffle is IOI walking away and taking Hitman with them (not just this game, but the entire series), but that's a better result than keeping this here and continuing erosion. We honestly don't need publishers who aren't down with our way of doing things.
I'll not respond to a specific post, but...

... when Chandra says:

I take that as a suitable apology.

I'd still like to see GOG make a statement of their mission and priorities...

... but...

... right now an apology and a statement that they are listening is enough for me.
Starting to make the rounds.

Let us hope so :) They still have a lot of work to do. I am surprised they haven't fixed some obvious issues with Galaxy, for one. Direct access to a game's forums in Galaxy, for example. Or sorting games according to the purchase date.
Helllloooo GOG, come on!

Edit: too many "for one" ;)

I must admit, I had started becoming increasingly disillusioned with GOG as of late, but this has restored the better part of my faith. I am relieved to see that GOG and GOG's customers are still willing to stand by our principles and say no to DRM.

BOYCOTT GOG!!!
+1. This pyrrhic victory does not deserve any celebration but instead I can see several gogers charging against the individuals not cheering... until the new deception appears that join us together.

I totally agree with that sentiment. Sadly, though, what's even more glaringly true is that no publisher needs GOG as a distribution channel. GOG has very little negotiating power here. The market share is very small, because the ugly truth is that most people simply don't care how DRM violates their consumer rights. If GOG puts an ultimatum to any publisher big or small, "you can't sell on our store unless you change…", I have an idea of their likeliest response.

I doubt that being on GOG was ever the deciding factor for any game on whether it would turn a profit. For a publisher to release here almost feels like fan service, and only worth it if the effort is kept to a strict minimum (as evidenced by how many games are not properly maintained/patched on GOG).

This situation in particular looks like it would be a major refactoring of a lot of game code, not just copying some files from the content servers into the installer packages. Now consider that maybe 1% of their potential customers would even care about this change. Would they really consider investing that work? Would they even still have the source code and know how to do it? (The industry seems to have quite a track record of losing those.)

Yes, let's rage and curse at everything, including the good decisions and apologies, like the mindless haters we get painted as by corporate white knights whenever we push back against GOG's bad decisions. Let's give GOG the perfect reason to ignore us in the future. Fuckin A.

That last one is most glaring, I feel. That just seems the most obvious thing.

Yeah no kidding. What's even the point of being here if nothjing GoG does will be enough. You're just wasting time at that point. You're just becoming a firestarter when you can do nothing but spout your spite demanding nothing is ever enough

Man, honestly, this is not your best post ever.

Not cheering = let's rage and curse at everything ??

Pardon me, but I am not a mindless hater either. If you consider you are, I won't discuss it.

Let's give GOG the perfect reason to ignore us in the future
for not giving GOG an applause? Really Breja?

Fuckin A

Ancient-Red-Dragon: IMO saying GOG "did apologize" is a bit of an over-statement, and so too is saying that they "removed the game."

The "apology" comes across like a pseudo-apology, or a non-apology apology. And it also comes across like a PR statement (which it is), or as another poster in this thread very aptly put it, "corpo fluff."

StingingVelvet: You wouldn't have been happy no matter what they did, you would always have asked for more.

Whether GOG misunderstood how much of Hitman 2016's singleplayer was online only, or they thought story missions were enough, either way the lesson was learned and GOG have once again recommitted to offline installers and DRM free games. Yet just like when Deus Ex 4's DLC required Galaxy for like a week, people will not move on and will continue to be negative at every opportunity and question GOG's every motive. Meanwhile no other store is even attempting to sell AAA and DRM free games.
You would be wise to remember that YET AGAIN it has taken a large scale community action to force gog to address issues that it has itself created.

It should also be pointed out that removing the game does not equal recommititng to offline installers and DRM free games.

And while I am at it, no other store I know of is attempting to sell AAA games under a DRM free banner- all criticism of breaches of this banner should be a requirement.
