Dear Community,

Thank you for your patience and for giving us the time to investigate the release of HITMAN GOTY on GOG. As promised, we’re getting back to you with updates.

We're still in dialogue with IO Interactive about this release. Today we have removed HITMAN GOTY from GOG’s catalog – we shouldn’t have released it in its current form, as you’ve pointed out.

We’d like to apologise for the confusion and anger generated by this situation. We’ve let you down and we’d like to thank you for bringing this topic to us – while it was honest to the bone, it shows how passionate you are towards GOG.

We appreciate your feedback and will continue our efforts to improve our communication with you.

So, which is worse for GOG? That they are so painfully idiotic that it didn't occur to them that Hitman even had drm or that they were malicious about it, trying to sell a product that goes against their core values? Neither one is a good thing to acknowledge in the slightest given the circumstances. Either way, it made it into a no win situation where they were going to be called out for it regardless.

Thank you very much.
This is a very good first step in the direction to restore the trust in our beloved GOG. Be assured if Hitman GOTY will be released in a more proper state, I and many other will buy the game at the very moment it gets released again.

I cannot speak for the community, but I for myself am again encouraged to spend my money on GOG again, as it seems to be the place to go.

I understand your feelings...

... but...

... GOG did just apologize and remove the game while deciding how to proceed (in talks with IOI).

IMO that deserves something. Not saying you need to applaud (I'm quite aware of GOG's recent issues), but...

... maybe a bit more wait-and-see? They are obviously listening and did make a first step.

IMO saying GOG "did apologize" is a bit of an over-statement, and so too is saying that they "removed the game."

The "apology" comes across like a pseudo-apology, or a non-apology apology. And it also comes across like a PR statement (which it is), or as another poster in this thread very aptly put it, "corpo fluff."

GOG did not take full responsibility for the debacle by disclosing how & why it happened, exactly, which is what they should do, and what they would do, if they were truly sorry.

Nor did GOG explain why it took them weeks to remove the game, instead of doing it immediately.

Nor did GOG disclose what, exactly, they were "discussing" with IOI during those weeks. Could it have been a compromise where GOG was potentially going to allow some DRM to remain?

The fact that GOG is not being upfront & transparent about these matters directly contradicts & belies the statement at the end of the PR fluff comment, wherein GOG promised to "improve our communication with you."

If GOG really means that, then they need to start living up to that promise immediately, by providing full disclosure about all the matters which I've mentioned in this post.

You wouldn't have been happy no matter what they did, you would always have asked for more.

Whether GOG misunderstood how much of Hitman 2016's singleplayer was online only, or they thought story missions were enough, either way the lesson was learned and GOG have once again recommitted to offline installers and DRM free games. Yet just like when Deus Ex 4's DLC required Galaxy for like a week, people will not move on and will continue to be negative at every opportunity and question GOG's every motive. Meanwhile no other store is even attempting to sell AAA and DRM free games.

Thank you! keeping GOG DRM-free and reliable is the best move you could do!
I would gladly see it back in the shop one day in a form that is acceptable.

Yeah, the game clearly is still here rolleyes.gif

Yes, yes, you feel entitled to all obviously privileged business information that no business would or could disclose. We've been over this. Get a grip.

I'm far from thinking this was handled perfectly, but you're being ridiculous.
Wow, mad respect GOG.

I don't envy your position in this, since I can't imagine that IO will budge given they had to be off the rails to begin with to even implement something like this. But a sincere thank you for listening and standing up for gaming in general. Single player progress tied to online servers is a nasty blight on our beloved hobby.

I'm going to buy Blade Of Darkness now to celebrate :)

Ecumen1cal: My expectations were very warranted but in your haste to post a rebuke you perhaps missed the fact that what many people here were asking was offline loadouts, costumes and starting locations, what also eluded you (due to in large part i asume your inability to conduct a cursory search online) was the fact that a solution to this already exists and has been used by buccaneers to play the game with these unlocks offline for years!
avatar
my name is supyreor catte: Nothing eluded me. The "solution" that already exists is to unlock all of those things from the beginning, like using a cheat code or someone else's save file. That's a dreadful solution and not one I would consider acceptable for a GOG release.

A proper fix where that content is unlockable through playing the game as intended (but offline) will take longer than 2 weeks.
Let's look at what just happened here...
1) I responded to chandra and stated that after 2 weeks i expected a patch and not a game removal.
2) You jumped in and claimed my expectations were impossible.
3) I clarified my expectations.
4) You then proceded to reject them as unacceptable and brought forth your own acceptable expectations that couldn't be delivered in a two week timeframe.
5) You declared yourself the winner.

my name is supyreor catte: You can keep your supercilious snark to yourself.
No.

my name is supyreor catte: Bingo.
Keep patting yourself on the back there champ!

LiefLayer: A little late but I can appreciate that you are trying to correct the problem and the apologies for this release. I also appreciate that you finally removed hitman from the gog catalog.
avatar
teceem: If I read that apology right; they're apologising for the consequences of their actions, not for those actions themselves.
Like: I apologise for causing you pain when I kicked you in the face. Nothing wrong with kicking people in the face... only when they complain that it hurts...
They were hoping most would swallow it whole, probably didn't expect the backlash to be this bad.

Thank you GOG for removing the game and listening to the concerns of the user base.

At the same time it is sad to see that there are people who just want to see the place burn.

DRM-Free is the way to be.

Don't behave like a spoiled child. What is the alternative? Steam, Epic? We DO want the pressure to work, because we DO want GOG to function and work and remain a DRM-free store. If they make mistakes, but then fix them and hopefully learn for the future, it's all fine with me.
I think that in general CD Projekt has suffered from bad managerial decisions as opposed to the earlier efforts and I think it is the head of the fish that is getting stinky. They probably need some managerial changes if they do not want to totally fail and go bankrupt. Somebody out there is not particularly competent - that is what it is.
