Dear Community,

Thank you for your patience and for giving us the time to investigate the release of HITMAN GOTY on GOG. As promised, we’re getting back to you with updates.

We're still in dialogue with IO Interactive about this release. Today we have removed HITMAN GOTY from GOG’s catalog – we shouldn’t have released it in its current form, as you’ve pointed out.

We’d like to apologise for the confusion and anger generated by this situation. We’ve let you down and we’d like to thank you for bringing this topic to us – while it was honest to the bone, it shows how passionate you are towards GOG.

We appreciate your feedback and will continue our efforts to improve our communication with you.

Matruchus: I find it funny when people think that Steam is so much different then gog.com when it comes to game ownership. All you own on gog.com according to their User Agreement is the license to download and use the game. You do not own any game on gog.com. Its not that much different then Steam Subscriber Agreement but it does give you a drm-free license for the games. The gog User Agreement is also only valid until termination same as the Steam Subscriber agreement just the wording is a bit different.

GHOSTMD: the big BIG BIG BIG difference here on GoG is, with Galaxy being OPTIONAL and NO DRM
attached to the games, NO ONE can contorl what you do with your property once you
bought it here. That is different with DRM and mandatory launchers, at any given time
a publisher could take away you access. (i am sure they will do so soon enough)

That is why this thread and that Hitman always online DRM blew up so much.
YES this time around it IS DRM since fuctions that should work by offline default are
bound to being online. This time it doesn t even matter if you can start Hitman without
Galaxy, since the game forces you onling like a MMO to have ALL the functions.

Ppl are here for the EXACT reason NOT to need a online conncection to play the game,
as well as having the FULL CONTROL over the product they buy.

Hitman GOTY isn t that seeing this happen on GoG, i must wonder what happens in the future.
Since as many said before this is a blatant 180° on the FCK DRM initative.
Matruchus isn't wrong. I already had a case where one of my games has been removed from my libary. Descent Underground. It was an early access/in development title which is also in the Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Descent_(unreleased_video_game)
I got my money back in the process but the game is gone. It might be possible to load the neccessary files to be able to install a game without an outgoing communication, it might be possible you can play the game directly, without a need to use another programm (not regarding DosBox) to launch the game. But the games are bound to an account and cannot be traded or sold.

Thank you for bringing this topic to our attention. We’re looking into it and will be updating you in the coming weeks. In case you have purchased HITMAN and are not satisfied with the released version, you can use your right to refund the game. At the same time, while we’re open for meritful discussion and feedback, we will not tolerate review bombing and will be removing posts that do not follow our review guidelines.
In late August 2016 we had Armello DRM-Free Edition, and less than a year later it got removed.

In mid May 2017 Gremlins Inc. was released, and less than half a year later it was removed - of interest to note is the quote in this post.

In the mean time, we got this list, and six months ago, user mqstout submitted this support ticket regarding it, to which your colleague ponzo_ replied with this:
All games available on GOG have offline installers available. We stay in touch with the partners and do our best to keep them up to date. However, video games continue to evolve with many titles offering online modes, cosmetics, and incentives for completing certain actions by players. This might be subjective, but as long as these additional features and rewards do not affect the single-player offline experience in a major way, we believe that the developers and publishers should be free to design and sell their games in a way they choose.
Do I need to say more?

GamezRanker: Well in some countries (like mine) one can make a DRM-free backup copy of their legally bought DRM-infested games....the problem, though, is that it's a bit more work.

mastyer-kenobi: In the U.S. you may always make a copy of anything you own and modify freely. And yes, if you have a license agreement, then you own it. A license, a statement of the physical status of the item you have purchased(it exists outside of software, and predates it), is not a lease. And no the steam subscriber agreement cannot intercede on the status of any game you own. If that were true you wouldn't be legally able to sign any other agreements.
The defense from Valve when they were sued by the French consumer group UFC-Que Choisir used the argument that they did not sold games but it was some kind of a a subscription service.
It had to be the French Court who Declared That Steam Gamers Actually Do Own What They Bought. Valve appealed or will appeal, so the case is still open.

Therefore, at least in Europe, for now You do not own your game, based in their own defense strategy and their policy. You have the rights for a some kind of long term rented game. It could change in the future or not.

Please notify us as soon as you find anything out. I would very much like to buy this game, but the DRM has to be fixed first.

what valve tries to claim is not my concern, I am concerned what's in the courts. I mean, yes, we should regard Valve said that, but if we stopped buying from it then we'd never do business with any company given how bullshit license agreements are. Valve is wrong, plain and simple. Hell, if it was true then they couldnt allow license agreements in the games since those can't be signed by renters.

Interesting, so this a negotiated middle gorund and this one seemed to slip by, [perhaps even by personal disagreement. If this is the reason and GoG truely does believe this isnt a serious effetc on the gameplay, then I will continue to defend the one stars as the use of a deceptive loophole. I do understand that GoG has limits and can't play the same subjective judgements us as customers can. and as much as I hate it, the most viable angle that doesn't abandon the DRM thing entirely, is to let shit like this go onGog and focus it on the developer being deceptive.

Curse you random internet man! you are challenging my ideas and making me consider things from another perspective. CURSE YYYOOUUU. We will meet again! and it will be your demise you monster!

i remember the armello nonsense well, because i was waiting for that particular game to land on gog.

my disappointment was immense and my day was ruined.

[and then i never bought a league of geeks game ever again.]

Yes but said copy wont work without DRM or Online connection or the mandatory launcher.
(if it has said DRM mechanics in it)
We here are "legally allowed too" to make a copy (at least that is my last info on it.
We are even legally entiteled to be allowed to SELL our games "Erschöpfungsgrundsatz"

Yet here we are... unable to do so since over a decade because STEAM and CO sought to that.
AKA we as PC players, since way way wayyy to few of us pushed back against it.

As i stated, it is about having FULL Control over the product you legally buy.

Yes and rightfully so said french customer won the case, because France has the same law.
That you re entiteled to be allowed to sell your games. Steam from the get go breaks those
laws ever since it got mandatory for the majority of PC games. At this point in time, i am sure
100% publishers think of plans for "limited" licenses to be allowed to delete your games from
your library.

Thats why i was glad once GoG pushed the whole premisse of beign DRM free and completely
with OPTIONAL launcher. However i always check for offline functionality on any of my purchases.
Even here.... even MORE SO NOW in the future.

I rly wonder if GoG is faltering with ther FCK DRM initiative.

In fact one of the consequences of the above High Court of Paris veredict should involve that Valve might allow Steam games to Be resold
Still no updates on situation, eh? Might as well set campfire here boys, it's going to be a long night...

The steam client is also optional for DRM-free games on steam, of which there are many thousands (see here for a very incomplete and sometimes inaccurate list: https://steam.fandom.com/wiki/List_of_DRM-free_games).

You don't need the client to download/install any steam game (see here: https://www.gog.com/forum/general/drm_free_on_steam_vs_gog_poll/post68), and once downloaded/installed, assuming the game is DRM-free, you don't need the client to play the game, nor can anyone but you control it.

I kinda let it go/accepted that GoG didnt respond over the weekend because they were not business days.
But no update on Monday? is it a holiday in poland?

yall had a full business day on monday to do something on this, either respond or remove the listing.

Of course that the Steam Client is mandatory, call it Steam Client or the command line version of the client

I want 100% of the game to be playable with no internet the moment I start up the game for the first time. Progression too, not just a 100% save file bundled in.

Sheershaw: Did anyone enjoy that part in the Bangkok level where Agent 47 talks about how the Republic of China AKA Taiwan is the rightful sovereign of China and that the Communist Party of China are illegitimate?
Can you or anybody please provide a link (timestamped) to any ingame footage with this?

I watched over 3 hours of the level being completed in different ways... Maybe I'm unlucky but none has it. Trying to search the Internet for quotes of "Agent 47" didn't bear any results either. I wanted to make a case against recently rejected "Contryball Heroes" who has jokes about all countries (equally), like if "Hitman GOTY" is allowed to do that, then this game should be too.
