Sunday is March 23, not March 27. (March 27 is Thursday.)

IwubCheeze: Talk about a coincidence. I got the first two hitman games from Gog September last year and just finished the first one last night. After finishing the game, I come to Gog.com and WHAM!!! .......new hitman game available for sale.

Thing is, I just got my backlog down to 23 games and I've been going easy on purchases this year so far (only 3 plus the Dungeon Keeper freebie) and I really want this one but ........I don't want to increase my backlog anymore. I've never had a gaming backlog higher than 5 games prior to joining Gog.

What do I do people? :(
If it helps, I used to try to be that way too, until I found out the hard way that games can get removed from the catalog (for various reasons). Once that happened, I buy when I can. I now have 294 games, the vast majority (say maybe 285 - 290) of them are all games I have yet to finish! Others here I am sure have a backlog much greater than that.

If you *think* you might be interested in it (and can afford it without hurting yourself) - get it. Once you get it, should the game leave the catalog, you will still have your copy. As someone who got the Space Ranger games (and of course the Fallouts) I can attest to that.

I use Win7 for gaming, and I do not have Alchemy.
I can have surround sound with my computer, it actually came with 5 realtec speakers when I bought it and I remember watching a few movies with the surround sound on, but I almost never use the speakers. My system is set up for doing most things, including playing games with my headphones on as I normally only get time to play games late at night after everything else has been done, and everyone else is asleep - so surround sound is a little wasted with me.

I think I know what you mean. The coincidence is thrilling. I picked up Hitman 2 in December and started playing last month. All I've hoped to see on GOG since then is a Hitman bundle with Contracts, and then BAM!, just that.

Plus, Contracts was out of circulation as a digital download for years because of a song in the game. Then Steam got the game in January with the song removed, but the GOG version apparently has all the original music. No one knows if this is intentional.

I'd say ride the wave of thrilling coincidence and get the game cheap with the original music. This is the moment for you.

Yeah, not much new stuff for me here either (I also have read up on that kind of stuff and I actually have *a little* experience with implementing DirectSound and other audio APIs). Really, the only thing I wasn't aware of was that EAX could work with OpenAL before Vista came along and Creative developed ALchemy. All OpenAL games I was aware of, including ones released before Vista, used other effects libraries than EAX for audio effects (unless run in DirectSound Hardware mode, of course) and all games with EAX support I was aware of needed to run in DirectSound Hardware mode to use it, most of them not allowing you to turn on EAX unless running in that specific mode. Whenever I found a game not running in DirectSound Hardware mode that would allow you to activate EAX the effects simply wouldn't work or it would continue using the exact same software effects it uses when EAX is turned off. If you're right then I'm in desperate need of doing more research.

Creative deprecated EAX and replaced it with EFX for OpenAL. I'm not sure when, but I think it was around the time Vista arrived. OpenAL rendered games can use either (e.g. Stalker/EAX - Alpha Protocol/EFX). Afaik, EFX has the functionality of EAX and is open, and can be used in software with any device.

DirectSound is emulated with Vista+, but OpenAL may communicate with it. I don't know if it passes through DirectSound first, or how exactly, or if DirectSound can be bypassed and excluded altogether, but I think that the OpenAL API can make use of the extensions regardless of what audio stack is used.

With legacy DirectSound titles, I think you're right, you have to have hardware acceleration to get EAX. If you couldn't use hardware accelerated mixing, you couldn't use EAX either, and vice versa. In my experience you usually have to have hardware acceleration just to get 3D sound with full HRFT, let alone EAX. Some titles won't use DirectSound Hardware at all without EAX being used as well (e.g. NWN2), though it isn't necessary for DirectSound Hardware to function.

Edit: Nevermind, that's too verbose. Just ask me if you would like me to clarify anything.

F4LL0UT: Can't complain, up to Blood Money I considered every Hitman sequel a major improvement over the previous game(s), I really don't know what unnecessary changes you mean. Also Absolution wasn't *that* different from the previous Hitman games, particularly in the second half many missions reminded me a lot of the classic Hitman experience.
avatar
stg83: Yeah, I don't know why Absolution gets so much flak from everyone because I really enjoyed it. Apart from the atrocious disguise system everything else was still very much Hitman. At higher difficulties the game is classic hitman, my favorite was the 47 vs the Saints part of the game. I enjoyed all the "accidental" deaths that I was able to arrange for them. :P
I liked absolution a lot, despite thinking it was going to be the shits. The only real thing that annoys me, not counting the "dumbed-down-splintercellconviction-like mechanics" is that you can hide a shotgun in your ass. I mean, WTF?!

Haha...yeah that was ridiculous, especially considering he used a brief case for the sniper rifle in the very first game.
Finally on PC again with great promo. We're very close to complete the series on GOG.

I will wait for Absolution to be bargain bin priced since it sounded like the worst since the first *no offense, I like the first just the sequels kept getting better!*. Blood Money is probably in my top ten favorite games of all time and i been holding off buying it online till it gets here!

I think on the last steam sale you could get it for 6 bucks. It is a really good game despite some flaws, I really liked the story of the game not to mention it is the best looking hitman game so far. Then you have the contracts mode which gives you endless amounts of replay value with awesome user created hits online. Give it a chance and I am sure you won't be disappointed. :)

I paid with paypal using the Chrome browser. Could be a browser issue.

On a lighter note, I installed Contracts just to see how it runs and I've only played the training mission, but my god I've very nearly spoiled myself for Hitman 2. The finely detailed improvements are exquisite. The sneaking is quicker, the animations are deliciously vicious, and it runs more smoothly than Hitman 2. Plus the mood is dark and brooding. I may go from playing H2 as a patient silent assassin to a ham-fisted thug so I can start Contracts sooner. It looks that good.

In any case, I hope you work out the paypal/firefox/server trouble.
