Let's turn the page.

Visual Novels have arrived on GOG.com! Our first selection includes acclaimed games, revered for their intricate artwork and stimulating stories, up to 66% off until May 29, 1pm UTC.

Higurashi When They Cry Chapters 1-5 (25% off): Spawning a popular anime and manga series, Higurashi is a "sound novel", where meticulously designed audio plays a crucial part in these unique stories. Chapters 1-5 are available today, with Chapter 6 slated for release in the near future.

fault (50% off): Sometimes it takes a healthy dose of pulp sci-fi and a dash of fantasy to weave a powerful cinematic story about the human condition. These two episodes of the ongoing series star the perky princess Selphine and her sarcastic guardian Ritona, as they desperately try to make their way back to their homeland.

Sunrider series (66% off): An alternate universe, intergalactic strife, mech combat, high school, and love all around. Sunrider: Mask of Arcadius (free!), Liberation Day, and Sunrider Academy are a beloved and unique mix of strategy, romance, and visual novel. De-censor patch optional, but come on.

eden* (66% off): Stock up on tissues. This critically-acclaimed love story on a dying planet is a real tear-jerker told with stunning cinematic flair. Humanity is about to be wiped out by a red star but this story is destined to stick around for much longer.

tinyE: I seriously don't see how this is any worse that cutting someone's head off and pissing on their burning corpse. which you can do on other games sold here, but what do I know? :P
It's really not - and if people really thinking it is ... well... I'll keep this to myself.

However. I guess drmike could not access the site since he was trying to do this from a public place which obvioulsy had this site (among many others I guess) blacklisted. It does not mean at all that the patch itself would show so much more that it can really be considered to be "porn". At least not for European standards (I know for America even a shown breast already is "porn" - which I will never understand).
I have to say that I don't usually like VN.
But I like anime... so if you get Steins;Gate ELITE, I will buy it.

MarkoH01: Question to those who know these VNs. As said I just downloaded "Sunrider Mask of Arcadius". When I wanted to start the game it gives me two choices to start with. Are these two different storys? Which one should I start first?

First Arrival
Mask of Arcadius

beliar: Sunrider is currently technically a trilogy and the order is this:
First Arrival
Mask of Arcadius
Liberation Day

It's just that the first two parts of the trilogy are packaged within a single game.

And for those wondering, even with a Patch, the first Sunrider game is completely softcore and doesn't show anything you cannot see in an R rated movie. It's only with the sequel Liberation Day that the game added full hardcore penetration... ;-)
Thank you. As I already said. If I'd want to see "hardcore penetration" I have sources I could access a lot easier and faster. I am curious about the story and the pics in general. Like I said - the soundtrack was really pleaseantly surprising me when I launched it. I hope to experience some more surprises.

Edit: So if it is technically a trilogy - what is the fourth story (Academy) about? When does it take place chronologically?

Which is your opinion and therefore completely valid as all opinions.
First Arrival. There are 3 chapters. Sunrider: Mask of Arcadius includes the first two for free.

About opinions, not really. In a free speech land and medium, everyone has a right to express an opinion, or any statement. That does not make all opinions or statements of equal value, and that is why we used to have news sources, books and experts.

But hey, this is just an opinion ;-)

Desmight: The only thing I fear is the lack of curation. If that's gonna be the case, then we'll end up having hundreds of anime shovelware games here too. And after today, it's clear that GOG's curation system is becoming too much flexible for my taste.
Well, look at it this way: I think there were a lot of similar concerns when Gog introduced In-Dev games and I would say that turned out quite alright.

This is a glorious, glorious day indeed!

MarkoH01: Edit: So if it is technically a trilogy - what is the fourth story (Academy) about? When does it take place chronologically?
Academy has nothing to do with the main series. It basically reuses the characters in a completely different setting. From what I heard it's just a romcom and not even sci-fi one, which is why I haven't played it.

I never stated anything about the value of different opinions I only said that every opinion is valid. I might disagree but the opinion is still there.

But let's not take this too far - we don't want to derail this thread with a discussion that is only of academic value :)

Just adding my voice as a thank you and a note of support to GoG for doing this.
Its nice when alternatives to gigantic players in a market pop up, especially in the wake of recent censorship.
I'll always be happy to support GoG as a storefront and recommend it to others as long as you guys keep your ethics, standards and ideals.
The more I stay with you guys the happier I've been (outside of a few small hiccups). This is huge though, like for real. Steam had such a stranglehold on the japanese market and not many feasible alternatives that weren't unknown were showing up, its nice to see an online storefront flex its muscles and remind Steam its not the only player on the block.
Screw Valve, praise CDPR and GoG and hopefully more high quality VNs make it unto GoG as well.

Nice!
At least now there is no need to default to Steam for VN, since there is at least a chance they'll come here. Too late for this batch but lets see what will be offered in the future.
I do believe that The House In Fata Morgana will appear, which is a phenomenal release, so I'm being patient as the sequel is about to appear as well.

I really think the Rance 5D/Rance VI combo should appear here along with Sengoku and Rance Quest, but how in the hell does one censor Rance? The sex is important to the story, and even rape scenes are a major part of story scenes. That's just the kind of character that Rance is, an asshole who can't keep it in his pants - but it is done in such a comical way in some cases that I never saw an issue. Especially for a thirty year old franchise.

And gameplay elements? These are games in the truest sense. You will grind and level up skills and characters in some very interesting ways. The music is also very good in these games. It's one of those things where the atmosphere is generally fun and exciting, but the social justice types would never get over the "OMG rape!" factor.

I think it's different. If the VNs that have just been published can be taken as a "standard", there are like 300-400 (maybe more) visual novels available of Steam which fit that standard (and on a side note, I think that VNs are one of the top rated genres on Steam). With early access/in dev it's quite different, because there are lots of technical reasons involved into a game being published on GOG or not, and there are maybe 50 or 100 early access games on Steam that would fit GOG's requirements. 50 vs 400. There are, what, 400 (? who knows exactly) visual novels that would be "perfectly fine" on GOG (because they have nothing more and nothing less than what they decided to accept today) but I still would not accept them on a gaming store, especially a niche one. They have opened the floodgates, in my eyes, and they run the risk of burying their catalog under a massive amount of VNs, if they accept all the "good ones". I mean, if they just release all the VNs they promised with their partners, there will already be more VNs than JRPGs on GOG. But yeah, let's wait and see.

I heartily agree. It is just that in the age of Facebook, the Unmentionable Orange, record lows in signal/noise and a handling of the true/false notions that brings to mind 1984 (and not because of Don Johnson), in these times it does not hurt to mention this kind of things now and then :-)

Enjoy your game! It is very fun to play. They made it free as a showcase. I bought the sequel, Liberation Day, just to repay the developers somehow. It is that good (as a strategy game, at least).

Ancient-Red-Dragon: I'm not sure why many posts in this thread use phrases like "visual novel games." Visual novels are absolutely not games. "Games" and "visual novels" are two completely different and mutually exclusive categories.

I'm not saying visual novels are bad, but to call them "games" is untrue.
And interacting with visual novels is commonly called "reading" as opposed to "playing".
