Let's turn the page.

Visual Novels have arrived on GOG.com! Our first selection includes acclaimed games, revered for their intricate artwork and stimulating stories, up to 66% off until May 29, 1pm UTC.

Higurashi When They Cry Chapters 1-5 (25% off): Spawning a popular anime and manga series, Higurashi is a "sound novel", where meticulously designed audio plays a crucial part in these unique stories. Chapters 1-5 are available today, with Chapter 6 slated for release in the near future.

fault (50% off): Sometimes it takes a healthy dose of pulp sci-fi and a dash of fantasy to weave a powerful cinematic story about the human condition. These two episodes of the ongoing series star the perky princess Selphine and her sarcastic guardian Ritona, as they desperately try to make their way back to their homeland.

Sunrider series (66% off): An alternate universe, intergalactic strife, mech combat, high school, and love all around. Sunrider: Mask of Arcadius (free!), Liberation Day, and Sunrider Academy are a beloved and unique mix of strategy, romance, and visual novel. De-censor patch optional, but come on.

eden* (66% off): Stock up on tissues. This critically-acclaimed love story on a dying planet is a real tear-jerker told with stunning cinematic flair. Humanity is about to be wiped out by a red star but this story is destined to stick around for much longer.

Wolfy777: Again a vaild point. It's an understandable consern.

Still it's a first big relese of visual novels on GOG.
I'd give it some time (and new releases) before drawing a finite conclusion.
Just my 2 cents.

P.S. Thanks for the chance to have a civil debate that didn't feel like walking through a mine field (some people can make it that way when opinions clash, especially if they confuse opinions for facts). :)

Time will tell, btw, but I have a horrible feeling of deja vu about this. Steam also started with "a few good ones", but now...
Think I'll answer this one backwards (as in in reverse order of how the point originally go).

Can't say I know how it went on Steam. I only started using after having a GOG account as a backup platform for games that GOG had little to no chance of releasing (e.g. Might and Magic Heroes 6).

That I certainly believe. You're proving it wonderfully too. :)

*sees the spelling mistakes* Nooo! ... Alright Spelling, you win this round. *send an evil glare its way* Still, all but one are technically typos. ... One day I'll slay that evil entity.

Back on track, would you be terribly opposed to a friends invite (if that's the right way to put it)?

I'm new to the whole social aspect of gaming and multiplayer (excluding meeting people IRL to play and that's in a small circle) and wouldn't mind learning the ropes.
Or we could keep it to an occasional debate and game recommendation exchange if you'd prefer.

Unless you're too opposed to a weirdo who occasionally holds a conversation with (annoying) abstract entities? :P

P.S. It may seem strange, but I'm somewhat more prone unintentionally get into misunderstandings with people due to being in the autistic spectrum, so I've learned to adopt a "check first" approach.
While autism does give you an eye for detail, it also leaves you wondering where your copy of a manual for social interaction got lost before delivery.

JinKazaragi: Uncensored would probably cause problems with Paypal and the like which would probably cost them customers.
They already mentioned that they don#t mind the uncut patches like Steam does.
I actually meant uncensored games in general and I know that this won't happen because of ... laws and missing age verification here. I just wanted to drop it here to remind them that this would be a wish :)
avatar
MarkoH01: I really doubt you will now see "games" like "under the blanket" or "shower with your dad" which I would consider to be shovelware.
avatar
Desmight: I hope so!
So that makes two of us :) Just let's wait and see and if it really should happen we can both complain ... together! I will be fighting on your side then.

For those who want to try the Sunrider series, know that the first game is a pretty decent VN/SRPG hybrid that will take you 7-10 hours to finish and all of that for the price of free. I would quite recommend it.

Sadly, the sequel Liberation Day takes a huge dip in quality. The plot is lackluster, the gameplay is minimal and the game itself can be easily finished in 4 hours. And it has the base price of 22.99 euros! The devs received many complaints after the game was released and in response tackled an additional 'what if' type of scenario, which has nothing to do with the main plot, to the latest edition and called it done. Ultimately, it's a disappointing sequel, and if you want to get it, get it while it's on sale, because it's not worth the base price.

I haven't played the Sunrider Academy, but it's just another 'what if' game and has basically nothing to do with the first two games.

MarkoH01: But why? It's already DRM-free available on itch.io if I am not mistaken.

takezodunmer2005: Well, I did not know this! Thanks for the info!
I cannot contact you in chat because of your privacy settings. But whatever. Maybe others would like to try Doki Doki Literature Club as well. It was recommended to me and I played/read it a bit.

Eden* has some kind of expansion that's not on GOG. Can anyone confirm whether that's skippable? I read it's supposed to be non-canon

Being on my friendlist is not that useful (I'm not much of a social person either, on the internet), but you're welcome on the forum, I suppose. The community here is much more friendly than average (in my experience) when it comes to gaming. Oh and yeah, sorry for the spelling mistakes :D

Thats good to know, as I was wondering should I play Academy first or not. Thanks.

There is an expanded version of eden* that is only available on Mangagamer website. It basically adds 4 (I think it was four) sex scenes that are not canon and are only accessible from the main menu after you finish the game once.
The core game is basically unchanged. There are a few scenes of non-sexual nudity (for example, the girl wears a bikini in the normal version, while the breasts are only covered by hair in the expanded version). Additionally, the scenes of violence have additional blood added to them.

LordEbu: Quite unexpected decision considering gog's past disapproving attitude.
I'll leave this for ya to ponder on a bit ;P

pmcollectorboy: Ooh! The Sunrider games are here.
But wait a minute, aren't they mostly tactical and choose your own adventure games about controlling a giant starship with some dating elements in them?
Tactical, yes. Choose your own adventure, not really: there are very few choices, and most of the few existing ones are cosmetic. Mostly you click along in order to advance dialogue.

The good thing is that you can choose focusing on the battles and developing your fleet and paying not that much attention to the more silly aspects of the story or the more tired anime tropes. That said, the tale of the exiles in a guerrilla war against tough odds works. The player has the POV of the captain of the ship. Said captain has flaws and is not exactly likeable, but as a character he has some (not that many) redeeming qualities.

But I guess you did not play Command & Conquer mostly for the story. Same here.

Impaler26: So GOG only has the censored versions of the Sunrider games?
From GOG Twitter:

"Our plans are to bring "All Ages" versions to GOG.COM . But we don't plan to block or interfere with compatibility for any additional content the devs want to make available on their end."
This is a pleasant surprise, got a few of them and thanks for the freebie :)

PortalShifter: What a shame. GoG was free of anime porn garbage til now.
It's called Sunrider 'cause....

(they're burning some asses down there, pal)

;P

Jokes aside, not a fan (kudos for bringing these, though) but bring moi some j-shumps now eh Gog? Would love to get me some Hitogata Happa love and similars ;)

Don't worry, I was actually commneting on my own spelling mistakes. XD Spelling has been my archenemy since I first strated learning English.
Although, I admit one of the side effects of studying English is a slight tendency try and correct people.

Well, my friendlist is still empthy, so I'm not sure I even understand how it works or what's it actually for.
To track the activity of other people maybe?

In any case, thank you. :) It means a lot to an akward furball (word play on my username).

Very nice additions to the store, thanks! Hopefully, more to come in the near future.
