Tiny Bang Story, Morphopolis, plus the Enigmatis and Nightmares from the Deep trilogies.

Who doesn't love the look of a messy room, devilishly concealing all the important items when you need them the most? That guilty pleasure of rummaging around for your car keys, wallet, or that grotesque ivory ornament which unlocks the secrets to the family curse, is what Hidden Object Games are all about!
We kick off their arrival on GOG.COM with a fine selection that was hiding in plain sight and some purty 70% discounts until August 10th, 1pm UTC.

Tiny Bang Story takes place on a lovely planet thrown into disarray after an unfortunate clash with a total jerk of a meteor. Help fix it by solving quirky puzzles and scouring hand-drawn screens for objects of interest.

The Enigmatis trilogy begins on the spooky streets of Maple Creek, a place overflowing with secrets, tragedy, and hidden knickknacks! Disoriented and confused after being hit by a furious storm, you must steel your nerves and stay focused on finding that missing girl.

Morphopolis is an evocative puzzle adventure set in an almost-psychedelic forest undergrowth full of curious insects. Gorgeous exploration and fascinating discoveries await.

Ghost ships, doomed romance, pirate treasure, and items in need of finding make up the Nightmares from the Deep trilogy, a chilling tale straight from Davy Jones' locker.

Catshade: [...] HOGs on GOG[...]
How did GOG miss the opportunity to use this as the header for this new post? ;)
avatar
Linko90: Hey guys. Please understand that we're a storefront that sells many games from many genres.
Yes. I think what many find confusing though is that it took 10 years before you added VNs and HOGs into the catalog. There has apparently been some very significant change in your store policy recently, but that has not been communicated to your customers - except for an unexpected "now we sell this" kind of message.

I'm not complaining though. I like occasional VN and HOG every now and then.

What is very strange here, is that you now seem to accept genres that many hardcore gamers don't even consider computer games, but at the same time, keep turning down games with some notable quality. Quite a few Kickstarter funded games come to mind to begin with.

So in order to avoid unnecessary user rant, perhaps you could communicate which exactly are the standards for GOG games these days?

Apparently casual genres are OK now? As you are selling "in development" titles, fully patched etc. from the early days of GOG is no longer the standard? Many indie games that both developers and players would like to see here are apparently not accepted, so there are some other criteria than people wanting to see those titles here?

So what exactly is the official store policy these days?

tfishell: I was also surprised by the whining but I shouldn't have been. :P The complaining makes me wanna go on a downvoting rampage.
avatar
MarkoH01: Please don't. Just reply if you want to add or explain. Downvoting simply solves nothing and it'S useless if you want to convey any argument or disagreement. I only downvote whenever people say something really inappropriate or hateful - did it this way since I registered here. I have a mouth and I can speak so I'd rather like to explain things. :)
Too late for a few but I've only downvoted complaints that add nothing to the discussion and I'll consider some of what you've said in the future. Plus it doesn't matter unless enough people decide to downvote also.

In general I agree that more speech is better though.

muntdefems: Also, what about the macOS and Linux versions of Tiny Bang Story? Are they coming?
I didn't even know The Tiny Bang Story is considered "hidden-object" game. For the current price I'd like to buy it (it was on my Steam wishlist), but it'd be nice to get Linux installer, so I'll wait for the GOG answer.

KingTLS: I have a soft spot for hidden object games. yes most if them are the same but I like puzzles.
modern day crosswords in my mind
Well said. I'd say I never considered these games as "gaming sensu stricto". It's rather something I do when I have no time/focus for "regular gaming".

avatar
Bigs: Meh. Good for those who like pixel hunting I suppose. Not my jam though.
A lot of people thinks this way. I think "hidden-object" name a bit misleading. I started to play some of them before I was told they are actually separate genre called HOPA. And at first I thought it's just specific point&click adventure with simplified gameplay, FPP and no dialogues. Looking for listed "hidden objects" is only a part of gameplay (sometimes it's a small part). Most of time you solve many different puzzles and use items the same way you do in most of classic point&click adventure games.

avatar
xKeiro: But please keep these hidden object games heavily curated, there are way too many junk in this genre.
Agree. With a proper curation I believe the genre may be a nice enrichment for GOG catalogue.

avatar
Splatsch: I'm mostly attracted by Nightmares from the Deep trilogy & The Tiny Bang Story, how good are they ? Are they a good starting point to discover the genre ?
Take first NotD and you'll know everything. All these games are based on the same scheme and if you played one, you somehow played all of them ;) Being you I'd try just one single game and "Nightmares 1" is one of the best Artifex games I've played and I can recommend it. N2 and N3 was a bit worse.

BeatriceElysia: First of all, to me, hidden objects games are for children.
I'd rather say they're safe to play when kids are somewhere around. That's exactly my case. I like to play them 15-30 minutes drinking Sunday cup of coffee. They are distraction-proof, they do not contain violence/sex scenes, there is no rich story to be missed etc. And my daughters may help me with some puzzles. I just like it from time to time.

BeatriceElysia: First of all, to me, hidden objects games are for children. But that doesn't mean they're not worthy addition to GOG. Enjoy people in new releases, they look gorgeous, but sadly not for me.
Also casual gamers, such as adults and even seniors. All of the hidden object lovers that I've met are 50-80. Though I don't interact with many kids in my field of work.
How dare you to have fun that DIFFERS from mine! Sacrilege!
You must have fun in the CORRECT way! XD

Also, by the way, I hate cheese as well. All of it, even mozzarella. Disgusting.

Linko90: Hey guys. Please understand that we're a storefront that sells many games from many genres. Not everything will appease your tastes, and that's fine, but don't use this as an excuse go on a rant. Especially when it's filled with expletives.
Always sage advice, but I haven't seen any such extreme posts in this thread (and I checked to make sure no posts have been deleted, and none have), nor any reactionary "WTF GOG?!?!1" threads in the forum. That "especially when it's filled with expletives" part seemed like it was referring to an actual occurrence. Or have you just grown jaded, and are expecting this to turn into a conflagration?

llamas: I've been interested in trying a hidden object game. I've heard good things about the Drawn series so I hope those show up eventually.
I've played all 3 and they were good.

Was referring to VNs as pedophile games (don't remember exact wording)

Found it "A hell of a lot better than pedophile dating simulators, anyway."

Excellent news! I bought a stack of these years ago on another site, and have played most of them myself, but they're mainly for my mother who loves them (along with Regency Solitaire). I have immediately bought each of these games (and the rest in the series for the series ones). That's my mother's next few presents lined up - I can install new games on her laptop! It's funny, she can just about use a browser and email (she mistakenly refers to Firefox as "Firefly"), doesn't understand anything else about PCs, but spends hours playing the same games again and again at the weekends.

I have been a computer gamer since the 1980s. I play lots of games on emulators (C64, Spectrum, Amiga - plus I have a full-size arcade cabinet with thousands of games on). I love games like Thief, System Shock, Amnesia, Soma and so on - and yet I also enjoy hidden object games when I am in a certain mood. I don't understand people who criticise something just because they don't enjoy it. I'm really glad to see them appear here, widening my choices. Thanks GOG!

From what I've heard these are "games for housewives" :D

I read that post before the edit (didn't even realize there had been an edit until you pointed it out), and while it was a crude, disingenuous thing to say: (1) it was a far cry from the expletive-filled rant Linko mentioned, and (2) yogsloth wasn't even talking shit about HOGs.
