Tiny Bang Story, Morphopolis, plus the Enigmatis and Nightmares from the Deep trilogies.

Who doesn't love the look of a messy room, devilishly concealing all the important items when you need them the most? That guilty pleasure of rummaging around for your car keys, wallet, or that grotesque ivory ornament which unlocks the secrets to the family curse, is what Hidden Object Games are all about!
We kick off their arrival on GOG.COM with a fine selection that was hiding in plain sight and some purty 70% discounts until August 10th, 1pm UTC.

Tiny Bang Story takes place on a lovely planet thrown into disarray after an unfortunate clash with a total jerk of a meteor. Help fix it by solving quirky puzzles and scouring hand-drawn screens for objects of interest.

The Enigmatis trilogy begins on the spooky streets of Maple Creek, a place overflowing with secrets, tragedy, and hidden knickknacks! Disoriented and confused after being hit by a furious storm, you must steel your nerves and stay focused on finding that missing girl.

Morphopolis is an evocative puzzle adventure set in an almost-psychedelic forest undergrowth full of curious insects. Gorgeous exploration and fascinating discoveries await.

Ghost ships, doomed romance, pirate treasure, and items in need of finding make up the Nightmares from the Deep trilogy, a chilling tale straight from Davy Jones' locker.

Great addition to the catalog!

GOG can you one day get Under the Leaves? If I am correct, it is game made in Poland.
I need a suggestion.

Are the individual games in the Enigmatis series complete in terms of story element? Will I have a proper experience if I get only one game now and the rest of the series later?

There are some references to a common backstory but they can be played separately, that's not really a problem to enjoy the games, even more so if you play them in order.
Mystery Case Files: Huntsville was the game that established the HOG genre. It's from 2005, but there have been some games with the same basic gameplay before that.

This article mentions I Spy Spooky Mansion which is from 1999. An earlier example is LOST AND FOUND by HGE, which I think is 1996. And before that, we had the Where's Waldy? Nintendo game from 1991.

(Another thing: Hellblade pretty much count as a HOG too!)

CharlesGrey: can already play a pretty decent mobile version of Player Unkown's Battlegrounds.
good luck controlling a third person shooter with a touchscreen
I'm a customer from Big Fish Games since a lot of years ago. I play literally ANY GAME that I consider a quality game. I own there "Nightmares from the Deep" and a lot of other titles. But the truth is GOG GALAXY is a better client and here I can buy the games a lot of reduced price. I don't mind to buy my entire colection from there again with the sales here.

Please the next time add the "Secrets of the Dark" games from there.

Thank you.
GOG, you made my day with this! I love the genre and got hooked a few years ago because of MCF (which I hope you'll bring here too, in time). Yes, they are easy and casual in a way, but some tell beautiful stories, have very enjoyable graphics and cool puzzles that can be quite challenging. And no, they're not mobile games, like some suggested. They started off like PC games and branched out, which is normal and logical.
But unlike the dime-a-dozen mobile games of the kind, GOG's selection, especially Enigmatis, is very good. As they said, a guilty pleasure :)

gamesfreak64: Depends on the gamer , some really hate casualgames[...]
So its hard to give suggestions to any gamer.
avatar
Splatsch: Yeah, I know :) Sadly, some aren't "respectful" with genres they don't like :S
I like some light games, it depends of my mood and of the game. Sometimes games clicks on you, sometimes not, whatever the genre/complexity of it ! For me at least XD I was really surprised with Regency Solitaire for example, an awesome solitaire game ! I'm planing to buy Shadowhand here one day !
avatar
gamesfreak64: Anyway most if not all (older) games have complete walkthroughs on youtube i always check them to see what to expect in the game...
avatar
Splatsch: I'll take a quick look, thanks :)

ciemnogrodzianin: Take first NotD and you'll know everything. All these games are based on the same scheme and if you played one, you somehow played all of them ;) Being you I'd try just one single game and "Nightmares 1" is one of the best Artifex games I've played and I can recommend it. N2 and N3 was a bit worse.

Splatsch: Okay I see ! I'll check some gameplay to take my final decision, but there are good chances I'll take at least the first one thanks to your advice and comments in this thread. Is the story finished at the end of first episode, or is the trilogy a whole ?
How is Enigmatis compared to NotD ? (but maybe you haven't played this trilogy)
Thanks for your help :)

I would like to add...
I personally highly appreciate the diversity of releases from GOG lately : kudos to you for opening the store to more genres ! :D
I mean, even if I'm not appealed by everything and every genre, it means that more tastes will be able to be satisfied, which means more happy people, and this is a very good thing.
I love Japanese games for example and I'm really happy to see more coming :) Same for some indy and strategy games !
No game or genre of game can please everybody, because we're all different, with different spirits and tastes.
about:

" I was really surprised with Regency Solitaire for example, an awesome solitaire game ! I'm planing to buy Shadowhand here one day ! "

I happen to have Regency Solitaire ( steam)

Shadowhand was instabuy at GOG , first seen on Steam and i got it at GOG

solitaires i have on Steam:

Avalon Legends Solitaire 2
Crime Solitaire 2
Fantasy Quest Solitaire
Home Run Solitaire
Jewel Match Solitaire
Legends of Solitaire Curse of the Dragons
Seven Seas Solitaire
Snow White Solitaire. Charmed Kingdom
Zombie Solitaire ( all current chapters)

and 2 or 3 wishlisted

I only created steam account for casual games, mainly for the HOG and card games, becauise GOG had none otherwise i would never used steam, now i have a nice number of steam games already, things kinda 'got out of hand' , you buy a few HOGs ( artifex and alawar and a few small developers) and soon you have too many Steam games ....

soulroar: Man these kind of games are a guilty pleasure for me. Really looking forward to the Mystery Case Files series from Big Fish!
same here way too guilty for owing too many HOG and other casualgames, things got out of control, i started with a few retail ( cd/dvd) ( drm free ofcourse) and soon i ended up with 500 or so games all retail and as much digital on a few platforms like steam and gamersgate.

The reason was because the AAA let me down.... way too many fps, 3d games and too many bad remakes like fallout commandos which all turned into a horrible , in my opion that is, 3d or and FPP shooter and i draw the line when devs\publisher hurt their own classic and create remakes in 3d or FPP ( fallout commandos, jagged alliance .... all these good games were turned into games i would not buy or want if they gave me a million ( although: 1 million ??? :D)

Anyway i stick with old stuff and some new stuff: HOG and casuals are the new ones.

Ingsoc85: So much for GOG curator standards.

Also, aren't those games mainly played on mobiles?
avatar
CharlesGrey: What is your point? That GOG shouldn't sell mobile-compatible games, or that all of them are bad? Because, as you may know, they already sell a large amount of games which are also available on mobile devices, and many mobile compatible games are actually of high quality, including games such as The Banner Saga or the Shadowrun series.

As the performance of smartphones and tablets keeps growing, people better get used to the idea that many of their traditional PC or console games will also be released on mobile devices. Heck, apparently you can already play a pretty decent mobile version of Player Unkown's Battlegrounds. Mobile gaming is no longer limited to clones of Flappy Bird and Candy Crush.
you said it :D you are right i dont mind if they release games on any platform, everyone is allowed to buy or not buy games, no one is forcing us to buy games on platforms we dont want, so let them come the millions of mobile games , i dont mind, cause i will play pc games as long as they make them ( problem is win 10 might not play many old classic games i love so that will be a small mightmare cause soon win7 will be +++)
Anyway i really would love to know which old games GOG versions work 100% on that horrible win 10

BFG loves DRM , i google for does Bigfishgames have DRM
one of the results was :

https://bigfishgames.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/230866627-DRMactivator-Has-Stopped-Working

DRM activator the magic word... i doubt if these DRM huggers will release their games DRM free .... its like EA would release all the c&c games DRM free , and games like Dune , also never gonna happen these guys eat, drink and sleep DRM, and DRM is a crime against honest buying gamers ....
old example StarForce nasty DRM used by : UBISOFT
it is a surprise...

I dont know this game genre at all, personally speaking. I heard it had some "steamy" bad reputation however... but i dont pay much attention to that, frnakly.

i just expect that GOG curation, for this genre, will help curious people like me to discover the good titles available in this game genre and spare us from the flood of mediocre titles that obviously contributed to give this style of game a bad reputation

i guess we are in a situation similar to when visual novels were introduced. From what i could read from various places, the titles that were included in GOG catalog were among the most praised ones. So i can hope this behavior will emulate here.

Maybe then, people like me could discover some genuine fun titles regardless of what the usual internet mob claims.

i think what the person tried to say with this post is that GOG previously used the argument of "too high likeness with mobile gaming" to curate out some very solid (and unrelated) games like the latest zachtronix's Opus Magnum (that, after some complain, finally got added here however), while they already had some mediocre typical mobile games like 1849 in their catalog

it was just, i suppose, to spotlight some kind of either hypocrisy, or complete lack of consistency

It is true that most mobile games are designed in a certain way, to appeal mostly to a widest audience, and possibly not to target players that have a longer history and record of playing various games, or having a wider gaming background; not to mention many mobile games are built upon some very shady economic model as well.
there are, however, some decent mobile games that has, afaic, the depth and design of any regular computer game (if at least of older era) that can find echo with more core gamers here. They are rare, but they exist.

So i guess that you can find some games in many unexpected games genres, that could ring a bell for anyone as well... i count on GOG to try to find them and show them to us (and to stop some of the awful "curation hiccup" we saw lately, at same time)
Lots and lots of these games are about ghost stories. Don't expect something like "Monkey Island" or "Maniac Mansion" ready to laugh. Are just puzzle games with different kill-time experiences with a background story. Usually the graphical aspect is good, with nice ambient effects. Lots of times the main character is a woman and there's a lot of romance-looking stories or facts, maybe for that people says "well, for my mom" or just the games are focused to that audience because is the majority there on BFG. Anyway if you don't mind that you can have fun. I remember playing dark versions frorm classic childhood tales like "the red riding hood", of course the dark version only resembles to the original tale just in details. Anyway it was curious to play. The red hood brotherhood fighting giant and ferocius wolves, that sinister city hidden in the middle of the lake, etc. I never have seen that tale explained this way before LOL

"Dark Parables" was the name of those games. Sorry for my english by the way.

N1 has closed ending and may be played alone for sure. Second and third part continues the story, because almost all the stories from Artifex games may be continued this way or another, but I don't remember any Artifex series without satisying ending of the story in a single game. You'll also see after a few games that story may be quite complicated (you usually reveals events from the past), but it's not so important for the gameplay.

Regarding Enigmatis - I've played the trilogy this year. It's more detective story with supernatural aspect. I liked E2 very much. However I still prefer NotD, because I just like marine theme and loved the atmosphere of amazingly drawn old pirate ships locations :)

These games are quite similar and only a theme brings some variety here. So it should be the most important factor in chosing which to play. There are Grim Legends based on some legends, Eventide series based on Slavic mythology, 9 Clues with detective story, Abyss placed in ancient underwater city, Clockwork Tales are steampunk etc. Gameplay and even puzzles are very similar. Scenery, music and theme do make a difference.
