Reliving the glory days.

Hero-U: Rogue to Redemption is now available DRM-free on GOG.com, 10% off until August 6th, 7pm UTC.

From the makers of the legendary Quest for Glory series comes a fresh take on the adventure/RPG genre, again set in the world of Gloriana. Young Shawn really really wants to be a thief but after a botched B&E attempt, he ends up in the Hero-U school. Here he'll pick up new skills (relevant to the Fighter/Mage/Thief/Paladin professions) and eventually set out on the adventure of his life, carrying light-hearted conversations with quirky characters, getting involved in turn-based skirmishes, and solving puzzles his own way.

i_ni: I'm a backer (May 2015) and my personal download page links two (I'd say very minimalistic) demos (Oct 2013 & Apr 2015).

Sir_Kill_A_Lot: Oh OK.
But those domes aren't representative for the actual game and no use for people who want one.

They are interesting for historical reasons though, e.g. comparing those old versions/prototypes to the actual release.
(I like keeping older releases of games I care about.)
There is some development online demo available. Or at least, has been at some point. I have never checked it out, and it needs some browser plugin which I'm not going to install. But for anyone interested, it's here:

Huh, never believed this would actually get released. This and the Two Guys from Andromeda Kickstarters seemed to take forever.

Oh well, I still think the Space Quest guys will never make a finished product again.
I must say, I was a bit worried Hero-U would ever see the light of day, but I'm sooo glad the Coles were able to finish it. Looking forward to picking this one up for sure!
Anyone have any idea how long it is?

It needs the Unity Web Player, so at least we know this demo is from after switching engines to Unity which is currently used in the final release.
It's been almost six years. I admit I wrote off my expectations for this game a good while ago, to the point that I stopped following the updates and downloading the content that became available. I have the physical rewards that where mailed out years ago stashed in a box in my closet with a bunch of other stuff I've accumulated over the years, along with the realization that even more will be coming in the mail at some point and I have no idea what to do with any of it. It's been so long and so much has changed, generally and personally, since the Kickstarter and crowd-funding craze. I look back and this wasn't the first game I backed, but it was one of my most wanted and the one I spent the most on financially, and now it's out, it's mine and I'm not sure if I'm even going to install it, let alone complete it.

Better late than never, though.

Was it ever not using Unity? I mean the Kickstarter was launched on Oct 19 2012 and the update speaking of Unity as the engine is from Nov 16 2012.

Mirak4: Set in the world of Gloriana?

I thought the Coles said that it actually wasn't set in Gloriana. So which is it?
I think the best answer would be to say that it's as close to being set in Gloriana as Activision's lawyers will allow. Anybody who has played through the Quest for Glory series will feel at home and there were more references to characters and locations in that series than I expected. As far as the letter of the law is concerned, though, they're distinct.
Yes, got my key :-)
I hope other backers here on the forum will also receive their key soon.
So what's the narrative structure like? Open sandbox (I don't mean like those SO CALLED sandbox games I mean a game that really does let us do a lot of things)?

Can we hang out with the cute school store guy?

Cavalary: Was it ever not using Unity?
Hm, you are probably right. They had to throw away a lot of code but it's quite possible that the underlying engine was Unity all the time.

Btw. the original pitch was a top-down 2D game. They then decided to use an 2D approach with isometric view before switching to an approach with 3D characters like it is used now.

Their blog is offline but here is an article from 2015 showing the 2D isometric approach from around end of 2013 (first picture) followed by pictures of the state from 2015:

(note: this forum cannot handle archive.org links, try this one instead: https://goo.gl/rFVHDZ)

It's interesting to follow progression of game development.

The Key finally arrived!
And so the key is activated. I'm glad I have supported this project on both kickstarters. It is worth it. Congratulations to Coles with the long-awaited release.

I wondered why I thought it used to look much different. Personally, I'm not big fan of its rather generic 3D look. =/

daluggage: The Coles are hoping to make five Hero-U games. The next game should have a wizard as protagonist (probably a female wizard). If I remember correctly, the third and fourth game should have a warrior and a paladin as protagonist. The fifth game is planned to be "something special" (I'm guessing that the four characters of the previous games will return in the fifth one).

I have been an alpha and beta tester for the game and during the game it becomes clear that one of the plot lines is not resolved in the first game. It is an overarching plot line that will connect all the games.

But all of this will depend on how well the first game sells.

I can recommend this game to everyone who liked Quest for Glory
Wait, you wont be able to build a class and carry it from game to game like QfG?

There went my interest in this series.
