What Hollywood hacking should be...

UPDATE: Let the techno-magic of the 14 tracks found in <span class="bold">Hacknet's OST</span> flow through your fingers, as you masterfully execute your digital break-ins!
The soundtrack is 20% off until February 1st, 2:00PM UTC.

<span class="bold">Hacknet</span>, a terminal-based hacking sim for the hidden hacker in you, is available now for Windows, DRM-free on GOG.com.

Is there a hacker buried deep within you? Struggling to be free while you go about the mundane and the usual? Are you woefully short on hacking-sims that let you live out your digital fantasies, or are you just curious to see what it's like?
Hacknet is a game about hacking, an adventure game that mixes the authenticity of a simple command line with beautiful hollywood-inspired interfaces and backends. Underneath these mazes of neon-greens and reds lies an instinctual UNIX-inspired language for you to master, and while those experienced with coding will find some things familiar, prior knowledge is absolutely not required. Between an overarching storyline, sidequests and twists, Hacknet is a game that may surprise you in more than one way...

Hack the world in <span class="bold">Hacknet</span>, available now, DRM-free on GOG.com!

styggron: Instant purchase as I love this Genre. There are not many titles in this Genre. It all started with C64's "System 15000" then Hacker 1 and 2.

Later we had things like Uplink, Streethacker, and of course the Hacker Evolution Series from ExoSyphen Games, and also the free HackTheGame and now this awesome title.

The ONLY thing missing is not being able to turn my CLI text colour to green, if it had that it would be complete ! :)
Hmmm this might be one of the games i buy in the initial sale rather than waiting, i mean it's less than $10, and it's bound to give me at least 4 hours of fun...

Last game i got that i pretty much bought right away was the TIS-100.

You'll have to tell me how the music is; Maybe i should watch the trailer for it...

More than $10 with my terrible currency :(
I thought the music is fantastic. I was disappointed there is no soundtrack offered on GoG unless it will come later in a "deluxe version".

My only instant buy games were
1. TIS 1000
2. Cosmonautica
3. Hacknet

I have things on my wish list where I have waited more than a year for a sale and I check daily, and they still are not on sale :)

Here is a link to the indie developer that make

Hacker Evolution
Hacker Elite
Hacker Duality

I have them all, loved them.

styggron: That is part of the simulation :) It's not a real one :)

Interesting, the only game I've played that probably fits into this genre is an old freeware game called darksigns (think they/or someone tried to make a newer game that was bigger and multiplayer but failed more recently).
Any idea how it might compare to this or the other games listed. Only way to find it is the wayback machine i think.

Goodness. You got me there. I thought I knew ALL titles in this genre. Darksigns is one I do not know :(

Flying through Hacknet, easy peasy. Some great in jokes in there for people that know this genre too. No spoilers form me though but I laughed several times ! Linux people will have no problem whatsoever, in fact you will MISS some commands such as cp, I could REALLY use cp in this game. Also wildcards only work for "all files" which is a GIANT pain when you need to delete long long long filenames, you need to type it all out... arrghhhh

Other than that, loving it ! I hope I still have a lot to go though.

I really want to make the console text green though :(

Looks like a game I'd have a lot of fun with, I'll see how long before I give in and buy it.

As for darksigns the only reason I know of it is that I have it on a PCUSER cover disk from October 2003, I expect its not well known but I've had plenty of fun playing it previously.

I have no trouble running it on Windows 10 as long as I click yes to playing the .1 file with windows media player which is nice (need to do this otherwise you get no music).

Think I spoke a little too soon, appears it requires compatibility and sometimes you need to use cls so that you can see what your typing easily as i cant see any windowed mode option.

jorlin: Funny how the in-game is based on Unix, whle the game itself is only available for Windows. I'll pass until there is a Linux version.
I could also just hack away from my own machine, but my moral compass won't let me ;-)
It seems there will be a Linux version at some point:

dick1982: original sys req for uplink, and even this seems a bit much for a mostly text game. it only supported OpenGL for some reason.

Uplink's UI was mostly text, but the text was presented in windows, and even fake windows need a graphics API to be able to draw them.

OpenGL is platform-neutral, which means you can port it to any platform later if you want. If you code to DirectX, you're forever stuck on Windows.

except every single opengl game either rejects intel chips or run extremely badly. platform neutral but don't care about hardware compatibility? bad idea.
I agree with dick1982, OpenGL really hates Intel and isn't because couldn't have better performance but it's lazy job on OpenGL support part even if drivers for intel chipsets tries provide better solutions.

Also on topic, before Uplink or even Hacker Evolution there was Digital Hazard game with full CD version OST in total of 5 or 6 tracks most of them being Avenue 5, sadly such version no longer exist on internet or include only 2-3 tracks.

The game will not start. It crashes instantly. :(

Same here, bought it, installed and can't run it... what's going on?

Shouldn't it be the other way around?, after all, OpenGL is a standard, not a piece of hardware.
Sure it has a working group, but only Intel will be able to make a good OpenGL driver for their own hardware.

It's exactly that way around, no matter how good Intel make drivers for OpenGL still the programs based strictly around OpenGL will run like shit so it's the OpenGL that cause problems like eqivalent of Unity engine in world of apps.

OpenGL is good for Linux, on Windows it is and always be inferior performance wise.

If that's the case, Blender should run poorly on Windows. The UI of Blender is purely OpenGL.
My Blender installation runs just fine on my Intel Haswell GPU, so it may be that many game programemrs feature OpenGL as an afterthought, rather than the main Graphics Framework when coding primarily for Windows.
I might be wrong though, I have never done any 3D programming on any OS.
