Return to the Valley of the Mines in this faithful remake of the genre-defining classic RPG – and try out the DEMO now!

With Gothic 1 Remake, you’ll explore a hand-crafted, organic open world that reacts dynamically to your actions in a gritty, unrestricted manner. Whether you're a seasoned Gothic veteran or this will be your first time being thrown into the colony, you're in for a true RPG experience with unrestricted exploration – and now, you can try it for yourself with Gothic 1 Remake - Demo (Nyras Prologue).

Now on GOG, check it out and wishist the Gothic 1 Remake!
It's still got problems (that hopefully will have been adressed or probably already are in the full build, considering the prologue dates back to 2023 or something along those lines) - particularly in regards to movement which may be even more unwieldy than the one in the original - but damn, if this kleine, aber feine horsd’œuvre alone isn't one of the most unapologetically non-compliant pieces of entertainment software of recent then I don't know what is.
If the actual full game doesn't pull a KCDII at the last hour by fucking around (too much) with established characters, lore or overall tone we're looking at the much needed remedy to all these infantilising purple-coloured with any-and-all-edges-sand-papered-away turds that have been stinking up the AA(A) RPG space as of late.

I'm still waiting for that remaster that came out for the Switch to be ported back home to PC. :/

But I guess the remake is good too.
Hmph.

I'm holding out for the Gothic 1 Remake Remake.

Sure, it's about 11 years off, but the graphics are going to be phenomenal...
Really, really good stuff here. Some headscratcher problems with the controls (simply extinguishing torches vs. sticking them in the ground), but on the whole, this really does feel like Gothic did back in the day.

That fortunately also extends to a rather awkward combat feel, as in the original, that got better by training and entailed a real feeling of progress. So thumbs up for that.

I did already manage to do the thing that really riled me up in the original though – accidentally hurt a friendly party, which of course couldn't be convinced that I didn't really mean it. Now I did manage to kill the dude (unresponsive as I spiked him with arrows), but as he was a quest giver, he got up to his feet again and again and eventually slayed my royal ass.

I'm okay with that though. That's kind of the Gothic feel, right? I've recently completed the incredible Creatures of Ava, and boy does this game have "rough edges" aplenty. I'm convinced we'll have a plethora of bugs in the Gothic Remake too. But also a traditional save system. So basically, save often, save in many slots, and you'll be fine. Hopefully. Just like old times.

Can't be worse than Gothic 3, right? ;)

Here's the big downer though:
The demo does send my graphics card into a frenzy though, regardless of my settings, and that's really worrying. Seems like it simply doesn't scale down very well. No idea how to confirm whether the final product is significantly more optimized. I'm not playing this if the graphics card fans are at 80% all the time on 'medium' settings.

Speaking of turds that are stinking up the game space ... for the sake of your own health, please get a new hobby and let people enjoy fantastic games like "go a teensy bit woke, go massive fucking success" Kingdom Come II. The counterculture has only started. What's coming, you brought on yourselves.
It won't start for me. Guess my comp is too weak. The game page says min of 16gb ram which I have, but it's ddr3 so maybe it's not enough.

I followed most of the suggestions here to no avail: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PgZUcxW0SJ4

Did you try the -dx11 workaround suggested a couple posts earlier?

JomVanFliet: In case you're having trouble starting a new game, try forcing DX11 by adding the -dx11 parameter to the G1R-Win64-Shipping.exe.
Worked for me.
Did the trick for me too.

Yup. Did a bunch of stuff including -dx11, -dx12 and -d3d11.

A lot of reports are pointing at a faulty shader compilation being the main culprit for the game crashing or not starting at all.
Maybe Alkimia is aware and are going to roll out another build that has that fixed at least.
the game wasn't starting for me, got a UE crash screen with options to send the crash report. then i cliked in the "send report and restart" and the game started.

Breja: Nah-uh. No way am I getting tricked into trying Gothic again.

dnovraD: Can I trick you into playing Ultima Underworld?
Ultima Underworld is fun.

NoClass77: Ultima Underworld is fun.
That's one part of it. The other part is morbid curiosity as to how they're going to deal with the game design of today vs the Eurojank and around 20 years of design philosophy changes.

I assume they'll probably use modern FPS type controls and a more streamlined inventory system for the Underworld Remake. That seems like a game that could be a bit easier to modernize. I do wonder how flying and stuff will work though.
The devs of Gothic Remake are surely pretty "old school = great" in a world of so many "modern wannabes". As an example... apart from supporting GOG very strongly, they even was providing a PC (!) version with physical discs included (super rare...). However... this Collectors Edition is limited to 7500 pieces only... world wide... and i predict this limitation was way to restrictive, even at a price of around 200 CHF; because the few copys sold in my country are sold out already... as a preorder... everywhere... a lot of days before the actual launch.
