....And let me negotiate among the stars.

Galactic Civilizations III: Intrigue is now available, DRM-free on GOG.com.
There is no galaxy where politics don't matter. Case in point, this new expansion brings a whole other layer of political interactions to your interstellar exploits. Pick from 20 available methods of governing, handle special Crises events, try to make your colonies self-sufficient, trade on the Galactic Market, and of course keep checking the news to see what's going on in the far reaches of space.
I'm really waiting for this game to be "done" so I can start playing it seriously... Every time I get into one, a giant patch andor DLC comes out and I give up. And then the next time I play it, it's a completely different game.

I was just last weekend thinking about starting one up. And now, glad I didn't.

Me too. Plus $20 for DLC that is only 133 meg? The game is only $30.

Eh, file size doesn't matter as much as mechanics/gameplay packed into that size. Chances are a lot of any media changes were cooked into the companion core game patch.
Base game + all DLC €106.98 .

What's the problem Brad ? You still need money to pay the lawyers against the original developers of Star Control ?

Man, I loved the first two GalCiv games.

Bought the third Day 1 when it was released here.

Haven't played it because I'm so bummed out about the unlimited DLC releases. I don't think I'll ever have this game complete, so it seems like it will never be worth my time to get started on an incomplete game.
DLCs are nothing new about GC series. And they tend to add good things. But as with Sid's Civ series, for me at least, it is far better to wait till the game is finished/released and then buy it. And by that I mean all DLCs.
Not that the game is not worth it, but I feel like with many games now days with DLCs, you get the death of a thousand cuts. (money).

With previous games, though, there were a few large expansions and a lot to learn at once when there are a few big changes. This switch to "DLC" model makes you never have a stable environment and always playing toward a moving target. Which just isn't fun for a strategy game where each game takes a very long time.
lesse: the game adds multiple, multiple types of governments, commonweaths (for when your civ grows too big), and espionage. There are now crisis events that affect your civ, and cryptocurrency for buying resources on the market. Now you can have 3 or more of your colonies auto-governed without having to touch them (have to defend them but their influence is yours and a commonweath wins with you in conquest). Quite a bit for 133 MB which is compressed data which uncompresses to 194 MB.
"There is no galaxy where...."

...Stardock doesn't leech their customers for every dime.
Is this game as addictive as the Civ games? Or the previous one at least, this one doesn't have the greatest reviews...

(I'm aware this page is about the DLC, asking about the main game though)

endless drip feed of dlc and pre order dlc is necessary, read this and then accept it is the way of the future:

Not excited about the explosion of DLC, but out of good memories from the previous game I might check it out ... too bad all of the sales seem to be going to Steam for this game.

I could get the base game here for $29.99, or the base game + crusade + a few extra DLCs for $13.59 on Steam.

Best I can do is vote with my wallet. Not like I have a shortage of games to play anyways!

GalCiv 1 is one of my favorite games of all time, and has a place at the table with the best of the Civ and MoO series.

GalCiv 2 is also very good, but I liked the first one better.

I recommend the first one very highly. It still stands up on modern systems very well.

Thanks! I should check out this series at some point then!

As far as Space Strategy à la Civ is concerned, what are the best games around (apart from Alpha Centauri - which I didn't dig that much tbh - and Master of Orion - which I have, but haven't played yet (but fear I might not like it because of its old school-ness))? Maybe I should check out Beyond Earth since I've heard that's basically a Civ reskin in space, albeit less fun?
