Can you see the forest for the trees?

Firewatch, an engrossing first-person mystery about adult relationships under stress, is now available DRM-free on GOG.com for Windows, Mac, and Linux, with GOG Galaxy support for achievements and a 10% launch discount.

Isolation. Suffocating temperatures. The impenetrable Wyoming wilderness. It's one of those risky summer days when Henry's firewatch duty seems refreshingly important but a permeating sense of dread hangs in the atmosphere. Against his better judgement, he will soon find himself out into the wild, aiming to investigate a potential threat to the forest. Strange happenings will soon cause him to start questioning everything, including Delilah, his supervisor that accompanies him through this ordeal via a walkie-talkie.

Not unlike its beautiful setting, Firewatch is better experienced than described. This emotionally-charged mystery turns the untamed 1989 Wyoming setting into the perfect stage for an intense, surreal journey of an isolated man that struggles to stay connected with the outside world. The choices you make and the secrets you uncover will feed into Henry's narrative and ultimately determine how this curious story plays out.

Explore the temperamental human nature as revealed during one man's eventful Firewatch duty, DRM-free on GOG.com. The 10% launch discount will last until April 15, 1:59 PM UTC.

In the press :
"Gorgeous and clever, Campo Santo's debut is a triumph of craft" - Eurogamer
"Easily one of my favorite and most memorable game experiences of this decade" - IGN
"A rare and beautiful creation, that expands the possibilities for how a narrative game can be presented" - Rock, Paper, Shotgun

tfishell: What is the price where you are? It's $18 USD.
avatar
MarkoH01: Really? Then I don't understand how it is regional priced (giving me store credit of about 2 Euro) and costing 17,99 Euro? So it is NOT more expensive in Germany?
Well it is more expensive right? 18 Euro = ~20 USD, so you get 2 USD back so it's "equal" to 18 USD (the USD price of the game)
Too late. I understand they want to delay to sell here because of piracy but at least get some upcoming info out here so I don't have to assume it will be steam only and watch it on youtube.

Damn my sucking at math - you are right of course. At the actual exchange rate (1:1,13) it should even be more difference than GOG is giving in store credit.

They replied to e-mail questions about GOG release. Did you ask them before watching? And it has nothing to do with piracy - simply handling of multiple distributors. I agree that it should be better however.

CelineSSauve: Wow...

How many Channels finished their LPs of this game weeks ago and GOG only gets it now!?
avatar
Zojokkeli: Yeah, I mean c'mon! I would've gladly bought the game on GOG had I known they were going to release it here.
Now I have it on Steam and have no incentive to buy it again.

It's a great game and it has my full recommendation, but I'm bummed it's released on GOG now instead of right from the beginning.
That's the benefit of a huge game back log. It gives me time to see if something eventually shows up on GOG. I hope everything will find its way here. Unless it's something like a Valve, EA, Ubisoft, or certain other publishers' game, or a game that heavily relies on Steamworks or Steam's multiplayer options, I hold out for the eventual release here.

Crosmando: No actually, I'm just sick and tired of all the "emotional narrative-driven experiences" as an excuse for having virtually non-existent core gameplay.
avatar
Vestin: I'm not. I've actually spent the last few years playing stuff like HotS, Theme Hospital, Jagged Alliance, Blood, Solaris 1.0.4, TIS-100... Hilariously enough - I DID pay attention to the stories in all of them. Either way - I could use something different, because my tastes are many. I'm a sucker for a good story.

I understand that you don't like this, but such a game's existence doesn't suddenly mean the death of another game that could've taken its place. This is not a zero-sum game. You can probably find something to accommodate your tastes, and other people may enjoy this. These things are not mutually exclusive. The industry is big enough to handle it.

Crosmando: MATURE GAMES FOR MATURE GAMERS SUCH AS MYSELF
avatar
Vestin: Level 0: kids not being mature
Level 1: teenagers desperately proving that they are mature
Level 2: people transcending the concept of maturity and ridiculing it (you are here)
Level 3: people no longer feeling the need to ridicule the concept and willing to explore it (I am here)

Not that this really matter. This also happens to be similar to my "stupid theist < stupid atheist < smart theist < smart atheist < ..." meta-level tower. I haven't figured out a better way to put this, and it seems that merely trying to stay one meta-step ahead of the curve is fairly short-sighted, since people can always climb above you...

Either way - I stay open-minded. Who knows - I might even enjoy Gone Home once I get around to playing it. It might be trendy to hate certain things, but I've never really given a damn about making a freak out of myself, so I'd rather form an informed opinion than preemptively give up on something...

tl;dr: Dislike it all you want; some people may enjoy what you find boring. There's nothing wrong with that. Leave them be.
Level 4: people that play and like actual games and dont give a fuck about pretentious non-games like this. (i am here)

I think I understand your paradigm. It's just sad that you probably won't realize why you felt the need to add (misspeled) "pretentious" to "non-games" for it to have the impact you sought. You might as well consider movies "crappy, non-interactive non-games". Feel free to toss in a few zero-content insults de jour like "pseudo-intellectual" or "edgy". I'm sure this will give you the impression that what you are saying is full of substance and rooted in objective, undeniable aesthetical fact. Frankly, I appreciate your passion for the medium. You seem to be quite emotionally invested, even though you seem to lack the mental faculties necessary to channel that ardor into thoughtful sentences. This is, however, something I have grown largely accustomed to over the years, and I don't even really mind it as much anymore; I still prefer humble ignorance, but understand that the two don't mix that often.
Still - I wish you the best, and I hope you play and enjoy the hell out of all the actual games out there :D! I know there will always be these naive simpletons who buy into the whole pretentious non-game market, but just try to ignore the lot. As long as they're not doing you any harm, they're just poor bastards with poor taste and judgement, right? Game on, fellow gamer. May your wins be many.

There's always the gnawing doubt that I might've encountered someone whose point of view either surpasses and supersedes mine, or merely is an equally informed equivalent that has its merits and which I have misinterpreted in ignorance. I re-read, re-think, re-imagine, re-interpret... I do my goddamn best. I always try to hear people out; I give the benefit of the doubt. In the end, I may end up fumbling things up completely, but in that case I'm always willing to reconsider... I guess it's a running theme in my life that I try to understand how people think. If they're not honest with me, I might reach horribly skewed conclusions, I guess, since I tend to be naive... I guess I'd rather not risk dismissing someone as a troll.

You have given me a chance I dared not ask for, and for that I thank you.

*ekhem*

I do not agree with this person. His views do not represent mine. This is not what I am after. I believe there are enough games for everyone, and merely oppose those who try to force their ideology on the industry. I am against destruction and alteration at figurative gunpoint, not against creation of more content. I don't want to drive anyone out, I merely refuse to sit down and shut up before demagogues of any kind.
For some reason there are only 4 save slots. Is it because the game is supposed to be very short?
Forget fire! I'm on the "watch" for Freddi Fish 2 getting here!
