First Encounter Assault Recon

F.E.A.R. Platinum, an award winning FPS horror, is available now for Windows, DRM-free on GOG.com with a 50% launch discount!

F.E.A.R. Platinum, is simultaneously described as one of the best designed first person shooters ever, and one of the eeriest horror games around. That's quite the combo. The FPS elements in F.E.A.R. Platinum remain exemplary even to this day, with A.I. that's willing to mercilessly out-flank and outmaneuver you, making each and every encounter an intense fight of who can turn the tables on whom. But combat is just half of this story, the second half is atmosphere - thick enough that you can slice it with a knife. This is a game of anticipation and fear of the unknown. It's downtime between combat encounters that will really get your heart pounding. As you wander the disconcertingly empty office halls and basements… something peculiar follows.

The Platinum package includes the base game, as well as the Extraction Point and Perseus Mandate expansions.

Become a highly-trained hunter of the supernatural in F.E.A.R. Platinum, available now, DRM-free, on GOG.com. The 50% launch discount will last for one week, until Thursday, February 19, at 1:59 PM GMT.

TWITCH STREAM SPECIAL
The one and only TotalBiscuit will be streaming the game live on twitch.tv/gogcom!

Will he be terrified of F.E.A.R. itself? Spend your evening with the cynical brit and soak in his always-unique perspective on Monday, February 16 at 9pm GMT / 4pm EST / 1pm PST.

ShadowWulfe: Also, it's my understanding that EP and PM were decided to not be canonical?
The events that happen in EP and PM are not considered canon, FEAR, FEAR 2, FEAR 2 Reborn and FEAR 3 are considered canon.

However if you skip FEAR 3 (because its terrible anyways) you could loosely fit EP into the storyline funny enough.
My Opinion :

F.E.A.R 1 - best of series.Has the most horror/scare of all the games in the series. Smart AI. Only downside is the lack of variety of enemies & the sometimes bland corridor type design of the game (yes the lack of color does it for me..despite that its a very good game, best of the series).
F.E.A.R 2 - less scare, more variety better designed levels.
F.E.A.R 3 - full on combat - most in the series. The mech combat is pretty good imho and worth looking forward to. Action action action. Minimal scares. I actually liked it :)

Considering Day 1 Studios (who made FEAR 3) also made the MechAssault games for XBOX, that's not too surprising to hear from my end since I enjoyed those games a ton too. It's a wonder they used the FEAR license when they probably could have just made an awesome Mech/Action game instead .

Too much hassle creating something from scratch for something not called Mechwarrior???
Fear 3 = definitely surprised me.Better than people made it out to be..

Digital_CHE: At least, the people at gog patched the game so it can run properly on modern hardware...
When did F.E.A.R. had any problem running on modern hardware? I'm glad GOG does that job, but I don't think F.E.A.R. is an accurate example.
Everyone notice the bonus materials that weren't there when the game first launched? ^^

+ commentary
+ behind the scenes
+ machinima (could this be the P.A.N.I.C.S. series?)
+ Alma Live video

It's Episode 0 of the series :)
Only episode 0? Too bad it couldn't have been all of them :P

Pretty neat seeing some of this stuff though - never bother to look most of the other stuff up back when this came out so I might need to buy it here sooner rather than later now. :)
ahh one of the best fps of all time
Damn it. After years of not being able to find "Perseus Mandate", I finally caved during a Steam sale and bought it there. I figured that it was better to have it on Steam than not at all, and FEAR 2 and 3 seemed to be tied to Steam from the beginning, so I never really expected them to make it to GOG.

Haven't played it yet, naturally.

Ah well. For $5 I've just bought the series again!

(Now I just need to worry about whether GOG is going to "patch" them and make me download 7GB every time...)
any chance that a multilingual version will pop up on gog sooner or later?
Is there a chance we could see F.E.A.R. 2 and 3 on GOG in the future?

Digital_CHE: To bad that this version is English only.... ¬¬

At least, the people at gog patched the game so it can run properly on modern hardware... Steam NEVER do that.. They don't care if the game works or not.. Hurra for GOG.
It is not Steam's job, is it not the people with the game's license that has the duty of updating a game to run? Besides if Steam NEVER did it, then I wouldn't prefer Steam to GOG for their update features. :)

tippete: any chance that a multilingual version will pop up on gog sooner or later?
Doubt it. The game also features English-only language on Steam.
avatar
h.e.X.e.n.: why only english language. The original Fear is multilanguage........ the lack of language support is an Achilles heel for gog.

AlKim: Because rights for localizations can be separate from the rest of the content, i.e. it is possible that the localizations are owned by a translation agency (or individual translators or what have you) and that GOG - or the publisher, or whatever the deal is - would have to pay to use those. It can be a pretty expensive matter, and if an accountant says that the increased sales are unlikely to pay off the investment, I can't blame anyone for not going through with it.
gog can not demand that we renounce the translation in our language because they do not want to pay for translations. But that reasoning is? Is not a serious reason. sincerely. we are in 2015 not in 1989
