Dungeon Rats, a party-based, combat-focused tactical RPG, is available now, DRM-free on GOG.com with a 10% launch discount.

First, there was Age of Decadence — a brutal RPG set in a low magic, post-apocalyptic fantasy world. Now, we descend deep below these lands in Dungeon Rats — where you must survive and dominate a gang-run prison hierarchy. It just so happens you're starting at the bottom.

The combat systems in Dungeon Rats have undergone considerable improvements since Age of Decadence, including party-based combat, positioning, new gear, and more difficulty levels. Whether you go it alone, or with a party — you'll need to take advantage of the detailed crafting and alchemy systems and varied weapon types to dominate the game's challenges — more so of if you'd like to see each ending.

Rise up among the Dungeon Rats, DRM-free on GOG.com at 10% off. The launch discount will last until Friday, November 11, 16:59 PM UTC.

This video is about the previous game.
What it doesn't say is the character creation is flawed. Only certain builds are good to go anywhere in the game.
Are you saying this game has the same issues? If yes, I will rather not waste my money again.

avatar
trusteft: Is the game more forgiving in terms of character builds than their previous game?
avatar
morolf: It's a pure combat game, there are no skills like steal, sneak etc., so you can't really mess up your game by creating a weak hybrid character like you could in AoD.
But judging from what I've seen (I'm now on the 2nd level of the mine), the game is very, very hard on "murderous psychopath" difficulty (AoD standard rules), so it might be best to start on a lower difficulty.
Is it an RPG or just a series of battles then? Any options in the game (story related)?

As far as I can tell, no, there isn't really any non-combat roleplaying. Only choices I've seen until now are whom you include in your party and some minor combat-related stuff.
It's also quite linear (much more so than e.g. Icewind Dale), it's really just a series of battles. To be fair, the developers never claimed otherwise, the game is cheap, and it's well done. But the difficulty (at least on the "murderous psychopath" level, that is AoD standard rules) is really pretty extreme.

If the AoD developers will ever end in hell for whatever reason, I'm pretty sure the Satan will play them Trusteft's "Let's play AoD" series... twice! ... (I think the sensation will be described as "hilariously painful" :D )

----

About *this* game.. anyone sage enough to predict whether linux binary will happen? IIRC AoD has one, right? Without this crucial information I sort of wonder whether this is insta-buy or just wishlist-me... Probably WL will do for now.

edit: nope, AoD doesn't have linux binary, at least not on gog. :/ But I remember playing it for 5min (demo of it), so either wine worked, or?

Age of Decadence does not have a Linux version.
Ok, so let me rephrase my question.

Does the Dungeon Rats work well under wine (AoD mostly worked, although on some configurations not well)? Any experience? If it's same engine as AoD, should be fine for me.

Thank you, very helpful.

You sound like a fan!
I am glad you enjoyed (for whatever reason) my Let's Play of that game. At least someone got something out of that Let's Play, it sure wasn't me.

Game looked interesting so i watched some playscenes on youtube, unfortunately its zooming and rotating again, seems you cant play the game from the old view baldurs classics used.

So because of gamemotionsickness i have to pass this game, kinda sad cause it looks good.
Anyway, lets hope there will be games like this without the fancy zooming and rotating coming someday.

Try maybe Chaos Reborn? It's quite different to this, except being turn based and tactical.

But the camera movement is fully controlled by player there (zooming and rotating included, if you wish).

Anyway, being so sensitive, did you try to undergo some treatment?

It works on linux very well. Details in the link. I've tested it on Lubuntu but I also know that it works great on Arch.

No treatment possible, it's not that bad, you are only limited to certain games and movies thats all.
The good part might be that much money will be saved, can't just play any game and therefore buy anything, so this will save lot's of cash.

Thats why i started to buy casual games these are available with 3d but the majority is 2d and don't have heavy motions, i can play most hidden object games.

The weirdest part is that many devs/publishers here at GoG do not offer ALL their games, there are lots of games these devs dont seem to share here.

Anyway, i used to use the community wishlist a lot to vote for games, but i noticed the number of votes
doesnt count if the game isnt made available becuase of some copyrights.
Most game that arrived are new devs/publishers and they are likely to expand there releases as much as possible , leaving the old good games that proved to be good arent avaialable because of license restrictions.
I do not see Dungeon Rats forum, so I will post here.
Turn Based Tactical games is my favorite genre, and my favorite one is Jagged Alliance 2 since 1999 year.

For those who did not try Dungeon Rats yet, I must say that there is not much RPG.
Game is focused on deep combat tactics.
Not much story, not much decisions in dialogues, and path is linear.
The only RPG element is that you level up and can distribute points on combat skills.
Additional features are simple alchemy and crafting (but in practice, crafted items are not noticably better than ones you find).

I am currently somewhere in "Crystal Cave", where is fight with 1 big worm and 3 poisonous plants.
I found that "bash" with a shield is not working, even if combat description says that you pushed enemy away.
I also run out of arrows, and there is no way to buy or craft them, and there are no more human enemies to get from.
I also do not have enough ingradients to make antidotes, which are very important in my current game progress.
Any tips how to move this combat forward, because I tried more than 20 times with various tactics and this 1 worm and 3 poisonous plants.
They didn't create a new forum for Dungeon rats, topics about it belong to the "Age of Decance series" forum (reasonable since most people who play it will probably have played AoD before and it's set in the same world).
Regarding the question about your fight...I'm somewhat further along (just managed to barely win a hellish fight against some goon called "the emperor's enforcer" and his crew), but it's hard to recommend you anything since I don't know your type of play/party. You say you're running out of arrows? Do you know you can craft them? You need to get the schematics by right-clicking on an arrow in your inventory, then you can craft them (same for all other items). Didn't know that at first since it isn't pointed out in the game.
I don't remember the particular fight you mention...those carnivorous plants are annoying, I usually tried to engage them from a distance with that crossbow-wielding assassin Roxana (they seem to be more dangerous in melee). If you can craft hand crossbows you can put them in her belt slots, that way you can fire off more shots per round. If you have a neurostim that might also help. But you definitely need some antidotes (are you sure you've looked everywhere for avatera sprouts?).
It's a good game but I feel the difficulty is excessive at times (I'm playing on murderous psychopath, that is AoD standard level). There have been quite a few fights I've barely managed to win by liberal use of special items like black powder bombs or liquid fire which are pretty rare. If I had used them up before I'd probably have been stuck with no way of going forward. I'm not sure that's good game design, definitely a bit too hardcore in my view.
EDIT: Btw does anybody know if there's a use for the iron ore you can often acquire in the mines? I haven't found any yet.

Wow, that information about crafting will be very helpful.
I will try and see if I am able to craft these arrows.
As about antidotes, I used a lot of them when fighting scorpions and in two previous fights with worms and plants.
I have only 2 for current fight, and I checked out the whole way back up to the moment where you choose the way to climb up and fight first scorpions - no more ingradients to find, and I was too lazy to move even more back.
I hope I have enough materials and crafting skill to make arrows, otherwise it will be a good test for my patience, because I am starting to be really flustrating with this one combat, and who knows if next one is similar when I will run out of special items and ammo.

My main character is tank like, with best have armor, tower shield, sword, 50 hp, 8 charisma (4 men party), and skilled in sword and block only.
Second character is Marcus with his hammer and good dodge.
Next two characters are changing between Roxana crossbow woman, early game extra crossbow man (thanks to charisma), 3 guys from fireplace (crossbow man and 2 weak fighters- too weak, because they die easily with their only 35 HP which is critical at end of combat or when poisoned), and some guy who were attacked by scorpions.

I could finish this combat easily with 1 party member death, and continue by replacing him or her.
But I want to keep all members alive, no matter if some of them are less useful for my style of playing.
Kadura Leaves + Avatera Sprouts get you a antidote.
Neurostim can be made as you may know and with a good level will give you +4 AP.
One good tip for any starter, probably not you guys, is knowing that the chest(stash) you get at the start will follow you throughout the game...use it as a dumping ground.
Strip all dead enemies etc for material and decompsoe all you need to keep the best gear in order.
Found the crafting skill to be well, it's not much help..most gear you just use as it's found.
Repairing broken gear doesn't need a forge or tools it seems...odd.
Only real reason to have smith skills is to remove the negative effects of some armours and maybe if good enough add + 2 AP etc, on your own crafted crap...But obviously less points for other areas.
I've found rations to be abundant..use those to heal after a battle and keep the salves for in the battles.

Ore you decompose at the forge into ingots..then you can craft with it.
Or you can do it away from one too :P ( amended ) for my own stupidity.
Bash with a shield works from my own experience, enemies do go back one square..maybe your STR is low.
Ahhh typing.
