I keep on falling...

Downwell, a downwards journey through a bottomless well full of pixel-starved creatures and untold treasures, is available now, DRM-free on GOG.com with a 50% launch discount.

How low will you go for a handful of shiny red gems? Driven by an overpowering desire to collect them all, our peculiar protagonist just keeps falling down the well in an unstoppable, frenetic descent. At least he's got his nifty Gunboots on, so he can blast all the nasty well-dwellers to oblivion, collect tons of upgrades, and temporarily resist the unforgiving law of gravity. Surprisingly, he's not the only civilized person here and every now and then he'll find himself in safe areas of the procedurally-generated caverns where he can level up, shop, or just ponder on his life decisions. Could it be that he's actually drawn to the well's impenetrable darkness or is he just looking for a way to battle it? Well, regardless, there's only one way to go from here..

Strap your Gunboots on and let yourself fall Downwell, DRM-free on GOG.com.
The 50% discount will last until December 11, 10:59 PM UTC.

Maxvorstadt: This is a C-64 port, right?
I can't remember if we had one, played lots of old C-64 (sad thing was the 'sore' eyes after looking at all that white stuff and flashy effects, which i avoided lateron on PC)
jeebus, my eyes. thought Id seen ugly games before...........
I'll wait for it to go on GOG Connect. Would gladly add it to my library for free.
Does this game run in WINE?

(I don't have Windows on either of my own computers.)

Fairfox: I'd sooo <3 seeing act. C64 titles here. Like bundles! Thalamus, Ocean, Codemasters, System 3, etc.

<3 <3 <3
System 3 thats the one who made Last Ninja (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ExftoivJ_EU)
Those games had atmosphere, too sad they 'hurted' my eyes, to blocky graphics, to many flashes, and the metallic sounds.
Lateron on PC many things improved , i stopped playing the old games and started to buy the pc games with better graphics and less metallic sounding music, which was quite an improvement , my eyes and my ears were very happy with the switch.

See my report in the Wine thread, please :)
Holy fuck this looks terrible. My eyes hurt from just looking at the screenshots.

It's published by Devolver Digital and two people are credited for audio so I bought it (regional pricing, so, like, half a buck). But seriously, why would anyone, the programmer included, waste time on graphics this atrocious?
I just read, that this game requires Direct X 10. What? This thing would run perfectly smooth on an 8 Bit Computer from the 80s, why DX 10?
Wow, not much love for this one here, eh? It may look ugly, but it is a lot of fun. Perfect as a quick 'jump in and play for a few minutes' type game, although several times I have found myself playing longer than expected to do 'just one more run'. Controls are smooth. It is definitely not an easy game and will probably take you time to get good (at least it did for me), but I did not find it to be an enraging experience by any means.

The funny thing about the graphics, by making progress in the game you unlock different colour palettes (e.g. instead of white on black, you can get green, blue, pink, etc.), just about all of which I found impossible to look at - so I ended up keeping the original.

Good game, absolutely worth a couple of bucks, especially if you like randomized permadeath platformers.
Do want, but typical for a Japanese game, no Linux. Anyone play the Android version? Is it playable on a phone?
Genre is my taste, gameplay video cool, at this price I don't have to think much. Buy and play for me.
plus check out the game site here

Funny, pity for the Japanese text that it SO low res that's unreadable to me XD

This review might help the undicided:

So, I have played it for much longer than I initially intended to. it might get addictive but frustrating until you get good. It's very fluid and rich - many items to use. Those thinking that this game could have been released 30 years ago puzzle me. To me it feels modern, with a retro esthetic.

Nice! It's a very elegant game, even though it doesn't have a lot of pixels.

amrit9037: So please release Cave Story+ soon.
I wish, but I don't know about that. Nicalis is currently firmly rooted in the DRM nest. (It's probably the reason why Ittle Dew 2 isn't here, even though the prequel is.)

Edit. Had said "sequel" instead of "prequel." Noticed it not even a second too late. Oh, well.

What about soundtrack?

Seriously :)
Does it really have permadeath?
